Growl!
There must have been four or five undead, one after the other, walking at a steady and sluggish pace next to Jin and the others. They kept going through the stiff group, attacking no one.
Growl!
Once they passed, a teenager sighed in relief. Soon after, the other followed in the same mannerism. What he didn’t expect, though, was that teen’s arrogant outburst. “That’s right, keep going, you mindless freaks!”
Jin pleaded with him to keep it down, without success. Kroll, who was the closest to him, grabbed his hand and pulled him towards him. The teen forced his hand out of Kroll’s and maniacally shook it at the undead, who walked away.
“Yeah!” He celebrated, laughed out loud and shouted at the top of his lungs. “Get going!”
That’s when another undead came from behind and grabbed him. It bit his neck and tore his flesh out with its teeth. Blood poured out of its mouth like an endless stream.
His screams forced the others to look the other way. “Nooo! H-Help please…”
Jin couldn’t stand it any longer and swung his bat, destroying the undead’s head. Its teeth ejected into the ground. Some even impaled the now incapacitated teen.
He lay on the ground. The young man struggled to breathe as blood gurgled in his mouth. With the rapid movements of his eyes, he begged them to help him. When Rena was about to move towards him, more growls came from behind them.
Rena pulled back and stood still. They watched as the approaching corpses bared their teeth at the injured young man on the ground. Jin clenched his bat, ready to strike, when Kroll shook his head.
The undead then sat on top of the already dying young man and chewed on him as he struggled and screamed. Jin and the others remained still, which apparently worked.
The undead completely ignored their presence. That’s when they realized. The undead tracked them based on sight. Jin pondered over this detail for several seconds when he realized.
When he roamed around aimlessly, his vision already suffered because of the black membrane. It was only natural that during the night, the effects would magnify.
After the undead ate the young man but a few pieces, they got up and continued walking away from Jin’s group. They all sighed in relief when it was over, though losing one of their own still got to them.
Through the darkness that prevailed for a few more hours, Kroll, his son, Rena, and the others shivered. Those who were in the Juvenile Detention Facility with him even shed tears. The entire group’s sorrow weighed on their hearts.
Jin felt the most conflicted of all. In the other world, they praised him as the hero who saved them. He always went in and helped those that needed him, but in that moment, he considered for the first time the needs of many over the one life he couldn’t save.
His mind went into overdrive, beating himself up internally for not having thought of such a weakness since he knew the restrictions of that poor eyesight. He even tried to make himself feel better by finding excuses. “My case was different. How should I know…? It’s not like it came with a user manual…?!”
Of course, no one blamed him. Even if they knew what happened, that still wouldn’t be the case, but for Jin, the pain and guilt he felt at that moment, no amount of cheering would help.
That night, they all stayed awake. The pain in their heart and the adrenaline pumping through their veins kept them from shutting an eye. They decided to not let his death be in vain since they gained valuable information.
Now down to three alive teenagers, with Krish being one of them, the following day, they covered more ground, hoping to get closer to the hospital, all the while keeping an eye out in case they could spot their stolen vehicle, even though it was a longshot.
After picking up the pace, they might have a day out of reaching the hospital. For as long as they could, they pushed forward to get back. Even if their legs gave out, they wouldn’t stop moving, but their mental exhaustion far exceeded their physical one.
In the meantime, back at the hospital that same morning, the patrols surveyed the area as usual. A party with Jorge as group leader was getting ready bright and early to venture down the hill and into Colby.
Whenever someone was on guard duty, they would check and reinforce the broken wall with materials they gathered from inside, or barricade the gate further, making it more secure.
They kept lookouts at the highest points of the building for a better view of their surroundings. One guard stationed as a lookout noticed movement in the far distance.
He called out to the people below to have a look. A couple of guards went down the hill to scout, while Jorge and his group waited for their return.
As a precaution, Jorge ordered his people to make their walls and gate more secure, just in case. Not long after, the guard on lookout shouted at the top of his lungs. “They are coming back!”
Jorge and a few others opened the gate for them. The guards rushed in and dropped to the ground once inside. They panted and sweated profusely. Having a hard time catching their breath, Coral brought them a glass of water.
They gulped it down in one go. One pointed in the direction they came from. His hand trembled and his voice cracked. He appeared unable to get the words out of his mouth. After a few deep breaths, he closed his eyes.
When his eyelids fluttered open, he mumbled. “Corpses…!”
Jorge placed his hand on the guard’s shoulder. “Speak clearly man…”
The guard stood up and walked towards the gates. His lips trembled as if he was afraid to even speak the words. “Corpses… A bunch of them are coming through the town…”
The moment Jorge and the others heard his words, they jumped out of the gate. Since they were far away, they squinted their eyes, trying to get a glimpse. Through the illusion of scorching asphalt, blurry figures walked towards them.
The other guard who scouted ahead sighed. “It’s a horde…!”
Jorge’s face twitched. His hoarse voice forcefully burst out of his throat. “Everyone, go back inside!” One by one, he visited the people mending their defenses. Right after they finished, he tapped them on the shoulder. “Nice work. Go inside!” Once he went back in, he stationed more guards as lookouts to keep him informed of the situation. Inside the hospital, the people shivered when they heard the news. Frightened, they searched for rooms to barricade, in case the undead broke through their barricades. Jorge, though, called one guard for a strategy meeting. The corridors of the hospital, for the first time in a while, were clear of people. Only Jorge, a guard he called, and Coral remained. Those who could go up the stairs went to the second floor, whilst the older folk grabbed the rooms they could reach.
Clouds obscured the silver rays of the moon from reaching the world below. The veil of darkness painted the sky as if it was a blank canvas. In the night's stillness, the cheerful chirping of crickets brought about a harmonious melody. It reached the ears of Jin and the others as they lay on the cold ground after a tiring day of walking in the blazing sun. Those few moments of blissful noise raised their spirits. A caressing wind tickled their skin when it blew past them in a hurry. Rena and Krish, along with the other two teenagers, had already fallen asleep. Kroll supported his head with his hand as he laid on his back, staring at the endless dark sky above him. The clouds might have hindered the moon, but the flickering stars still assembled and sparkled proudly. He enjoyed the beauty for as long as he could s
When they heard the name coming out of Rena’s mouth, Kroll and Jin looked at her, surprised. Jin voiced his concern. “Are you sure?” Rena nodded silently. Jin dreaded their encounter. Not because of fear, but the timing couldn’t be worse. His mother’s whereabouts were unknown, and Barton was at his home. Merely the thought of him hurting her boiled his blood. Not even a few seconds passed, and Barton’s voice sounded heavy and scornful. “Rena, you little bitch...” He fired a few more shots in their direction. His loud voice muffled the noise of the gun. “Betraying me wasn’t enough...?” “I didn’t betray you... Your actions came with consequences as I had told you before...” “B
The sound of a droplet falling in a pool of water reverberated in a poorly lit cave. A warm yellow light flickered inside. His footsteps left shallow prints in his passing, whereas his dark aura overwhelmed the brightness. Once inside the cave, he saw someone in a seated position in front of a fire with their back turned towards him and a hood covering their head. A female voice warmed his heart. “Welcome, Jin.” “Who are you? What is this place?” The young woman stood up and turned towards him. Jin, stunned, took a step back. “Y-You…?” The girl’s golden hair fluttered like a restless sea. Her warm tone pulled Jin’s heartstrings. The thought alone of the other world hit a nostalgic note of his essence. “Nice to see you again. My actual body has no recollection of this
Jin opened his eyes and saw half his body submerged in a hole, the one he dug himself out of. Chipped nails dripped blood. The crimson liquid poured from his orifices when the sharp edges of the rocks cut him on his way out of the grave. Ripped clothes with dirt and dried blood. Cuts and bruises dripped fresh, while he chewed on pebbles. He looked around hazily. His blurry vision didn’t help, either. He stroked his eyes, but the particles tore his cornea and more blood gushed out. Once again, he felt relief, thankful he didn’t feel pain, but the situation remained troublesome. With his eyes half open because of the glued eyelids, he crawled all the way to his house. Right after he entered, he went straight to the bathroom, up the stairs, where he tripped a few times. There was no electricity, therefore the icy co
The skyline across which surrounded the valley had hues of orange painted to the east. It’s the following morning, and Jin spent the night in the camp of the new people he met the day before. Jin woke up in a tattered tent. He remained laying on his back with his hands supporting his head for a few minutes and pondered over the events that took place. At some point, he chuckled when he remembered the teen growling towards him. -Right after he rendered the teen unconscious, hurriedly the teacher approached Jin and signaled him to stop the brutality. That person wore a white round hat, which made him stand out even among the other weirdos, Jin thought. “My name is Lound…”. He looked at the teen on the ground and shook his head. Lound’s voice was calm and came out soft and unrushed. “This guy here is Ronnie. I’m sur
The shocked expression on Jin’s face became pretty apparent, even to Ronnie, who didn’t even hear what Lound said, but he could see it on him. Jin shoved Lound to the side and created some distance between them. Jin then stared straight into Lound’s eyes. His voice trembled when he uttered. “W-What did you just say?” Lound sighed before taking a deep breath. “When the corpses overran the hospital, a group had already come down from behind, trying to get away. Their leader sprained his ankle. They distanced themselves from the hospital, but corpses rained down on them from all sides.…” Jin focused intensely as to not miss a single word coming out of Lound’s mouth. When Lound paused and caught his breath, Jin’s still heart almost jumped out of his chest. Lound continued with as much detail as possible to ease the young man’s mind. “I, along with a few fellows, helped them get away, and we headed towards our camp when we heard a gunshot coming from the town…”
Jin looked around him as people of all ages stepped out of their tents while looking at him with awe brimming in their eyes. All of them had the characteristic bone through their noses as if they went through the same ritual. It creeped him out the fact that they had wrapped fingers, ears, and eyeballs around their necks. Each one of them emanated an eeriness, which Jin instantly noticed. Rattled, he took a step back. The people approached him at a slow pace. Even then, they mimicked the way undead walked. Besides that, their murmurs added weight to the ghostly sensation. The camp being in a graveyard didn’t help either. Jin turned to Lound, who kept that same smile as if it was natural for people to act the way they did. Jin froze for a moment before he approached him and whispered. “What’s happening?”
