Jorge’s face twitched. His hoarse voice forcefully burst out of his throat. “Everyone, go back inside!”
One by one, he visited the people mending their defenses. Right after they finished, he tapped them on the shoulder. “Nice work. Go inside!”
Once he went back in, he stationed more guards as lookouts to keep him informed of the situation. Inside the hospital, the people shivered when they heard the news. Frightened, they searched for rooms to barricade, in case the undead broke through their barricades. Jorge, though, called one guard for a strategy meeting.
The corridors of the hospital, for the first time in a while, were clear of people. Only Jorge, a guard he called, and Coral remained. Those who could go up the stairs went to the second floor, whilst the older folk grabbed the rooms they could reach.
Cold sweat drenched Jorge’s face. It went through the fabric of his clothes and ran down his spine, sending chills throughout his body. Lily stood by his side and held his hand, which elevated his spirits. In front of Coral and the guard, he tried his best to keep a stoic posture.
When they made sure people were safe, they dragged a table in the middle of the corridor and sat around it. Jorge stood to one side and looked at them. His face filled with sadness, he sighed. He turned his gaze to the guard and seriously asked. “If those things come to the hospital, will it hold?”
The guard pondered for a while and shook his head. “At the Juvenile Detention Facility, we had walls, and they still broke through…”
“Right…”
Coral suggested. “We still have some time until they get here. We can leave…”
Jorge glanced at the guard, who liked the idea. He nodded in agreement. Having made his mind, Jorge’s hoarse voice echoed in the empty corridors. “Then that’s what we do…”
Coral then asked. “In case we get separated, which is a likely scenario… Where do we meet?”
After giving it some thought, Jorge replied confidently. “How about the mayor’s place? It’s quite far from here and if we circle around, we can avoid the corpses…”
Coral and the guard agreed and began their routes to inform people of the plan. What they didn’t expect was the resistance they met when they told them. Besides a few old men and women on the first floor, Coral failed to convince the younger generation on the second.
No matter how hard she tried to explain, they would always close the door in her face. Coral didn’t give up and insisted. Meanwhile, Jorge, with Lily’s help, split the supplies they had left and put it into a backpack, which brought another set of trouble.
The person who went against him before opposed him yet again. “What do you think you are doing?”
Jorge coldly replied. “What does it look like?”
The man grabbed the bag from Jorge’s hand. “You are not taking these…”
Not in the mood to argue, Jorge pulled it to his side forcefully. “Evenly split. Now back off…”
The icy stare shot daggers into the man’s soul. Unaware of it himself, he took a step back. Once he realized what had happened, he simply lowered his head and let Jorge continue.
After a while, Coral returned with a few people that accepted the plan they came up with. The guard reluctantly parted with a couple of weapons and together they set foot outside the hospital.
Whoever left behind barred the doors. Jorge sent a scout ahead while they waited by the gate. A few minutes later, he returned. “We are still on time. It appears they have difficulty coming up, but they’ll soon be here…”
Coral looked at the stoic man and sighed. “We don’t have a choice. We’ll have to descend from the other side…”
With the new information the group gained, Jorge led his group down from behind the hospital so they could escape inconspicuously. The slippery ground made it harder for them.
The back side of the hill was steep and deep. A wrong move could easily lead to a deadly fall. Lightly packed, the group carefully took one step after the other, walking in a single line, helping each other along the way.
A couple of hours passed since they began their descent and a couple of meters from the root of the knoll, Jorge slipped. The others heard the thud upon impact. His groans reached their ears. Anxiously, Lily rushed down as fast as she could and found him with a twisted ankle. “Grandpa!”
“I’m ok, child… Just a minor sprain. Nothing I can’t handle!”
Soon after, Coral and a guard reached him and assessed the situation. Lily, with eyes full of worry, approached Coral and whispered in her ear. “What will happen to him when we have to run…?”
Coral shook her head and replied with a smile. “We’ll get to safety before that happens.”
By the time the horde of undead reached the hospital, Jorge and his group had already gone down. They barely made it before nighttime. The surrounding area appeared to be safe as two guards helped pick him up and support him.
Despite being in pain and in need of immediate medical attention, it didn’t stop them from moving away. In the dark, with no way to pinpoint their location, they pushed through by sheer will and hope.
Just as they created some distance, a loud bombardment of screams echoed from atop the hill. Gunshots one after the other came from where the hospital was at.
The undead broke through the gate and made their way in. Even though Jorge and the others couldn’t see what was happening, the screams alone painted a mental image in their minds. Coral and the rest remained silent. They closed their eyes and waited for the cries of pain to stop.
At the hospital, people frantically tried to escape the rotten creatures from tearing their flesh apart with their teeth. Some even jumped from the second floor, trying to get away.
Sprains or broken legs incapacitated them, making them easy prey. Undead flowed out of the windows behind them. The crackling bones from living and dead made the hair stand to whoever was close enough to hear it.
Although the once sturdy building is now infested with undead, more kept coming up and through the gate, pouring in like an endless stream of death.
In the meantime, the echo of the gunshots carried over for quite a distance until it reached Jin’s ears. He jumped up from his seated position and turned to Kroll and the others. “Did you hear that?”
Rena worriedly replied. “It came from the hospital, right?”
Jin, determined, looked at Kroll. Once he received a nod from him, he grabbed his baseball bat and a backpack. “Let’s go!”
Clouds obscured the silver rays of the moon from reaching the world below. The veil of darkness painted the sky as if it was a blank canvas. In the night's stillness, the cheerful chirping of crickets brought about a harmonious melody. It reached the ears of Jin and the others as they lay on the cold ground after a tiring day of walking in the blazing sun. Those few moments of blissful noise raised their spirits. A caressing wind tickled their skin when it blew past them in a hurry. Rena and Krish, along with the other two teenagers, had already fallen asleep. Kroll supported his head with his hand as he laid on his back, staring at the endless dark sky above him. The clouds might have hindered the moon, but the flickering stars still assembled and sparkled proudly. He enjoyed the beauty for as long as he could s
When they heard the name coming out of Rena’s mouth, Kroll and Jin looked at her, surprised. Jin voiced his concern. “Are you sure?” Rena nodded silently. Jin dreaded their encounter. Not because of fear, but the timing couldn’t be worse. His mother’s whereabouts were unknown, and Barton was at his home. Merely the thought of him hurting her boiled his blood. Not even a few seconds passed, and Barton’s voice sounded heavy and scornful. “Rena, you little bitch...” He fired a few more shots in their direction. His loud voice muffled the noise of the gun. “Betraying me wasn’t enough...?” “I didn’t betray you... Your actions came with consequences as I had told you before...” “B
The sound of a droplet falling in a pool of water reverberated in a poorly lit cave. A warm yellow light flickered inside. His footsteps left shallow prints in his passing, whereas his dark aura overwhelmed the brightness. Once inside the cave, he saw someone in a seated position in front of a fire with their back turned towards him and a hood covering their head. A female voice warmed his heart. “Welcome, Jin.” “Who are you? What is this place?” The young woman stood up and turned towards him. Jin, stunned, took a step back. “Y-You…?” The girl’s golden hair fluttered like a restless sea. Her warm tone pulled Jin’s heartstrings. The thought alone of the other world hit a nostalgic note of his essence. “Nice to see you again. My actual body has no recollection of this
Jin opened his eyes and saw half his body submerged in a hole, the one he dug himself out of. Chipped nails dripped blood. The crimson liquid poured from his orifices when the sharp edges of the rocks cut him on his way out of the grave. Ripped clothes with dirt and dried blood. Cuts and bruises dripped fresh, while he chewed on pebbles. He looked around hazily. His blurry vision didn’t help, either. He stroked his eyes, but the particles tore his cornea and more blood gushed out. Once again, he felt relief, thankful he didn’t feel pain, but the situation remained troublesome. With his eyes half open because of the glued eyelids, he crawled all the way to his house. Right after he entered, he went straight to the bathroom, up the stairs, where he tripped a few times. There was no electricity, therefore the icy co
The skyline across which surrounded the valley had hues of orange painted to the east. It’s the following morning, and Jin spent the night in the camp of the new people he met the day before. Jin woke up in a tattered tent. He remained laying on his back with his hands supporting his head for a few minutes and pondered over the events that took place. At some point, he chuckled when he remembered the teen growling towards him. -Right after he rendered the teen unconscious, hurriedly the teacher approached Jin and signaled him to stop the brutality. That person wore a white round hat, which made him stand out even among the other weirdos, Jin thought. “My name is Lound…”. He looked at the teen on the ground and shook his head. Lound’s voice was calm and came out soft and unrushed. “This guy here is Ronnie. I’m sur
The shocked expression on Jin’s face became pretty apparent, even to Ronnie, who didn’t even hear what Lound said, but he could see it on him. Jin shoved Lound to the side and created some distance between them. Jin then stared straight into Lound’s eyes. His voice trembled when he uttered. “W-What did you just say?” Lound sighed before taking a deep breath. “When the corpses overran the hospital, a group had already come down from behind, trying to get away. Their leader sprained his ankle. They distanced themselves from the hospital, but corpses rained down on them from all sides.…” Jin focused intensely as to not miss a single word coming out of Lound’s mouth. When Lound paused and caught his breath, Jin’s still heart almost jumped out of his chest. Lound continued with as much detail as possible to ease the young man’s mind. “I, along with a few fellows, helped them get away, and we headed towards our camp when we heard a gunshot coming from the town…”
Jin looked around him as people of all ages stepped out of their tents while looking at him with awe brimming in their eyes. All of them had the characteristic bone through their noses as if they went through the same ritual. It creeped him out the fact that they had wrapped fingers, ears, and eyeballs around their necks. Each one of them emanated an eeriness, which Jin instantly noticed. Rattled, he took a step back. The people approached him at a slow pace. Even then, they mimicked the way undead walked. Besides that, their murmurs added weight to the ghostly sensation. The camp being in a graveyard didn’t help either. Jin turned to Lound, who kept that same smile as if it was natural for people to act the way they did. Jin froze for a moment before he approached him and whispered. “What’s happening?”
Rotten limbs and corpses rained on the dirt after Jin flew through the undead wall. The moment he hit the ground; a mouthful of blood sprayed his surroundings. A growl followed from the unfamiliar undead that shook the earth. The group of the camp shut their ears. The intensity forced them to kneel. They flinched when they saw it walking in front of them. The undead ignored them the entire time it was there. For a moment, it glanced in their direction and blood froze in their veins. It returned to where it landed the first time and walked around the altar. It stared for several seconds before knocking it over. Lound, who remained silent and, on his knees, looked over at his frightened group. With movements of his eyes and nods of his head, he signaled them to trickle back, out of its range.
