Very little is needed to make a happy life
-Marcus Aurelius
~.~
Henry walks to the door and keeps his hand on the handle. Taking a deep breath, he parts the door just enough to take a peek. Right as he does, a zombie slams against the door with growling sounds, and he closes the door again.
"We'll spend the rest of the day here, shall we?" he asks, looking bewildered.
I walk to the window next to the door, which has a curtain and slightly parts it enough to look through it.
"Don't." Ivan quickly pulls me back with his hand on my shoulder. "If they spot you through the window, they'll attack it. I don't think this window is strong enough to keep us safe," he says to me, looking up at me.
"O-okay..." Ahh, don't look at me like that.
There's complete silence in the room for a while. Sasha sits on the ground against the door, and Henry sits beside her. Eric sits on the only chair that's in the room. I look for Ivan, but he has gone back to the large bookrack where he's looking over something.
I walk up to him.
"Don't you think it's better to have some rest?" I ask him.
"I am restless."
"I can see that. Sit down." I put the report he's holding aside and gently shove him to the ground. Then I sit next to him, leaning against the bookrack.
Ivan clasps his hands together tightly until his knuckles turn white. I can sense that he's tense for some reason.
"Why do you look so tense?" I ask.
"I... saw someone familiar outside in the parking space."
"Who?"
"A friend of mine." he keeps his hand on his forehead and shakes his head. "It sucks to see friends infected like that. This isn't the first time."
"I get it. It might be hard to see them lifeless like that."
"That's why I am rushing this mission. I want to find the truth about this virus so someone can develop the cure soon."
"First, we have to leave this room."
"Yeah. Unfortunately, the parking space lights are on. So even if nighttime comes, we can't escape without a plan."
"How do the lights work without electricity?" I ask in confusion.
"They might be automated solar lights. I don't know."
Everyone falls asleep after a while except me. As I slept in the vehicle, I was fully awake. Ivan's head falls on my shoulder beside me, and I try my best to stay still. I can hear his soft snoring. The way he sleeps itself makes me realise how tense he is. He seems to be stressed over everything that is going on. It might've made him avoid conversations as well. I am quite surprised he talks with me even.
I turn to look at his face and admire his features. He's so damn handsome. Ahem. Anyways.
I look around the room without moving, wondering where we get all this ventilation as I don't feel stuffy here. Then I notice a line of ventilation windows on the side of the room.
After what feels like forever, I wake up Ivan, knowing he has had enough sleep for now. We've spent hours in the storage room already.
"Yeah?" he asks in his sleepy voice.
"Come with me."
I pull Ivan to his feet and take him across the room. Then I point at the ventilation windows that are wide enough for even two humans to squeeze in together.
"Our escape route," I say.
"How will that work?" he asks.
"Give me a hand."
With his support, I get on top of the large book rack. He holds me by my waist as I land on the top. Then I crawl toward the windows and get hold of them. I see the windows are fixed with some screw nails. I tug at one with my fingernails until it comes off loose. Then I copy it with the other three. The window plate comes undone, and I hand it over to Ivan. I peek inside the window to find a large square tube spreading long.
"Shall I go in and check?" I ask him.
"Let's go in together," Ivan says.
"What about others?"
Ivan walks to Henry, who's fast asleep, and wakes him up. He let him know that we'd found a route to escape the room and that we are planning to check it out.
"Will you two be safe in there??" Henry asks.
"Yeah, the zombies can't make it in there," Ivan says.
With Henry's help, Ivan gets on top of the rack behind me. Ivan then motions me to go inside. I step into the ventilation tube first, and Ivan follows me. The square shape of the tube allows us to stay inside without feeling suffocated. Then I start crawling forward.
"Make sure to remember the way back." Ivan reminds me.
"Yeah, okay."
We crawl a bit forward until we reach a place where the tube goes in two directions, left and right.
"Right?" I ask.
"Okay."
We choose right where we keep crawling until we hear a low grumbling sound coming from somewhere in the tube.
"Zombies might be below the tube," I anxiously tell Ivan.
"Maybe. Wait-" He holds my upper arm and stops me. "Listen."
We listen in complete silence to the sound for a while. As it fades away, we crawl forward, approaching an intersection.
"We can go forward."
"Okay-"
The growling sound from before grows louder.
"Ivan... I don't feel good." I say, taking a step back.
"Let's head back."
"But this is the only way."
"Still, it feels- oh, shit." Ivan's eyes fixate in front of me, and when I squint my eyes in the darkness, I can see a zombie in front of us.
"H-how'd it get inside??" I ask, fear creeping through my veins.
"Maybe this one got bitten and tried to escape through the ventilation tubes. But got infected inside... I guess?" Ivan slowly pulls me back so my back presses against his body. We keep it silent, and I can almost hear our hearts beating loudly. We stay still in the same position for a few minutes.
"Crawl backwards. We can't turn our back on it." Ivan finally says.
"Okay."
We crawl back together as slowly as possible. We almost make it silently, but my leg slams against the metal tube, that the zombie's attention shifts toward us. I gasp in fear, holding Ivan's arm tightly.
The zombie charges at us while crawling at a speed that is inhuman. We move back as much as we can. But it's too late. The zombie jumps at me with bared teeth, and I almost pee in fear. He opens his mouth with his horrifying eyes eyeing everywhere.
He's just about to bite my hand when Ivan suddenly pushes my hand aside and takes the bite from the zombie instead of me.
To be happy, you must be your own sunshine-C. E. Jerningham~.~The ventilation tube fills with my screams of horror. Ivan holds the zombie's head with his free hand and twists it until the zombie dies. He pushes the zombie away and looks at me, who's still startled and shivering in fear.He looks at the deep bite mark on his hand and looks at me. I can see through his eyes that he's struggling to think of something. I don't know what."Ivan..." I mutter his name and take his injured arm close to examine it.His hand holds mine, and I can feel it has turned cold due to the instant blood loss. I quickly open my side bag, where I've arranged some first aid. Then I pull out some wrapping bands from it."It'll hurt, okay?" I quickly wrap his arm tightly so that he won't spill more blood."You are aware that I will soon be infected, right?" he asks. For some reason, my vision gets blurred with tears. Why did this stranger have to take the zombie attack instead of me? The zombie was about
Happiness is an inside job-Anonymous~.~We run in the corridor past the dead zombies and come to the fire exit stairway door. Ivan takes the lead as usual and opens the door. He runs upstairs, with us following from behind. We run a couple of stairways and come to the third floor."There are two laboratories that we have to search. How about we split up?" Ivan asks."Sure, it'll be a good idea. I have the two walkie-talkies with me." Sasha takes out the two walkie-talkies and gives one to Ivan."What are the teams?" Henry asks."If possible, let me be in the group that has three. I am still not used to this whole thing." Eric says.I look at him and mouth 'Scardey cat', to which he flicks my forehead."Then... the usual teams. We usually have Henry and me, and in team two, Ivan." Sasha replies."Eric takes the team with three means... I am with you." I look at Ivan, who nods. I can't believe I am teaming up with him. Then he simply opens the door to the third floor and put out his h
Happiness shared is the flower - John Harrican ~.~ Ivan clears his throat, "We should continue our search." he says. I pull away from the hug and look away awkwardly. Why did I do such a thing? "The morning sunlight will pour in through the windows any second now. If the zombies in the corridors see us, it'll be bad. So we better hurry and gather as much information as we can." We inspect the first cupboard by the entrance in the pitch darkness. "Wait. Why don't we check the computers first? They might have the research information because they were doing it while hell broke loose. Right?" I ask Ivan. "Then we have to switch on the electricity again," he says. "Yeah. But we have no choice. We need the electricity." Ivan thinks for a while and takes out the walkie-talkie. "Are you guys safe? Over," he says to the walkie-talkie. A reply comes from Sasha after a while, "Yes. What about you? Over." "Same here. Now Andrea assumes the research and lab reports might be in the co
Don't search for Happiness. Create it.-Anonymous~.~Ivan keeps his bag on the ground and takes out two ramen bowls. He opens a water bottle and splits the water into the two plastic bowls that already have the dry noodles inside. I break the flavour packets and add them to the bowls. Then we let the noodles get soak."How are the others doing?" I ask about the other team."They have locked themselves in a room like us. After eating, I will go outside and check all the computers. You stay here. Okay?""Nooo. I want to help-"Ivan frowns at me."If you want to get locked up with the zombies next door, I am fine with that. I'll do it.""Come on! You are so-""Handsome. I know.""Wha- I- I didn't say that!""You said it in your sleep. 'Handsome but rude.' Thank you so much for the compliment."OH MY GOD! WHAT!HOW!?"When did I say that?!" I ask, already embarrassed about the whole thing."In your sleep a few minutes back. You sleep talk, didn't you know?" he asks."I! I had no idea!" I
Happiness is a journey, not a destination. -Ben Sweetland ~.~ I wait for the electricity to go off. When it does, I find myself in a blindly dark room. I wait for Ivan to come back and fetch me. He comes after a while with the door flinging open. And I quickly walk out of the room with him. We start searching where we left off the day before. We search through every file for a clue regarding the file's password. An hour into the search, Ivan sits on a chair for rest and dozes off to sleep after a while. I wake him up and ask him to sleep on the floor as he might get neck pain from sleeping on the chair. I find some lab coats in a cupboard and make a small pillow for him. I let Ivan sleep there and search through files for three hours. As I get tired, I take the walkie-talkie and contact the ones in the other lab. "I am Andrea here. Over." "Hi, Andrea. It's Henry here. Over." Henry replies. "What are you guys doing? I searched for a clue about the password but still had no luck.
Happiness is a choice, not destiny - Ralph Waldo Emerson ~.~ I wait for Ivan to come inside. It takes him a while to return. And when he does, he has blood on his face. "Ahh! What happened to your face!" I exclaim in horror. "Just some blood," Ivan replies nonchalantly and closes the door behind him. I quickly hold his face and turn it in all directions, checking if he's bitten or scratched somewhere again. Ivan keeps his hands on mine that are on his cheeks. "Chillax. It's just the others' blood." he walks past me and flumps himself on the floor. Then looks at my concerned self. "What do we do about the security password?" he asks. "I have no idea. It's not like we can guess it. If it's a person's password, we could've tried birthdays and stuff." "Right. That's what I mean. We can't fuck up the five attempts." "Are you going to check for something outside now?" I ask as I give him a piece of paper to wipe his face. "We should think another way. Think you have to keep a pa

Every moment's joy is life's sweetest melody -Alex Bennett ~.~ The door opens again after a while, and that's when my breathing evens out. He's here again, but why is he here? I look at him and find him sweating with blood scattered on his body. He... has killed the zombies so we can leave. I follow him and walk out of the door, and we walk in the corridor in silence. I notice the dead zombies along the corridor, blood splattered everywhere, making us step on them and make a trail of bloody footsteps. We don't run as we usually do, and I realise the change is all because of what I did. I regret. I shouldn't have done that. "I am sorry," I say as soon as we take the turn to the main corridor. "I- I wasn't thinking when I did that, and you-" "Why did you do it then?" "I don't know." He stops in his tracks and turns to face me. "I don't know about you, Andrea. But for me, it's something that happens between people who love. It might be just another kiss for you, but I take it ser
