CHAPTER 154

Oliver walked back to his desk, trying to shake off the feeling of discomfort that had settled in his stomach since his encounter with Carter. He had always dreaded being put in a position where he had to deal with his step-brother, and today's meeting had only made matters worse. As he settled into his seat, he felt a tap on his shoulder.

"Hey, Oliver," Dave said. "What was that all about? Why did Carter call you into his office?"

Oliver sighed. He didn't want to talk about it, but he knew Dave wouldn't let it go.

"It's something personal between me and Carter," he said, trying to keep his voice neutral.

Dave raised an eyebrow. "Personal? What do you mean? Did you guys have a fight or something?"

"No, no, it's nothing like that," Oliver said, hoping Dave would drop the subject.

But Dave wasn't one to give up easily. "Come on, man, you can tell me. We're friends, right? And besides, there's nothing going on here that isn't already known to us all."
