CHAPTER SEVEN
Kevin picked his phone and dialed the number of the person who left him with nothing two years ago.
The old man’s voice resonated with a deep timbre that carried the weight of years of wisdom and experience.
“Kevin! I knew you would call…”
Kevin responded impatiently,
“Hello Grandpa, let’s not waste time with fake formalities. I’m calling to let you know that I can help solve the crisis of Williams family with my money but in exchange for that, I have two conditions. One, before six o’clock tonight, you will give me a DreamLover necklace. Second, at the down town family branch, there is a person named Blakely, I want him removed immediately.”
Still sitting on his motorbike, Kevin hung up the phone with his grandpa and said to himself,
“The tables have turned! Now I have all the power… this is going to be so much fun.”
Just then, Kevin received a text message from his wife Lily. Kevin took a deep breath and read,
“I’m sorry about our call earlier. I really wish things could feel like they used to between us. But, I wanted to remind you about my family gathering tonight. Could you please put up something new to wear? You know how judgmental my family members can be… it would mean a lot if you leave a good impression since I already have so much pressure from them about my job. Thank you.”
Kevin smiled as he typed back,
“Of course… anything for you. I promise to make you and your family proud tonight, I love you.”
Kevin got up from his motorbike and looked straight ahead at the luxury neighborhood in front of him.
What Lily didn’t know was that Kevin had just arrived at the Golden main buildings also known as the most luxurious neighborhood in Veridonia.
Minutes later…
Kevin was sitting on a familiar couch and standing at the opposite side of the room was Kevin’s uncle, Mathew. He took a deep breath before speaking,
“Your grandfather couldn’t be here so he sent me in his place.”
Kevin stayed sitting on the couch as his father’s brother stepped forward and gave him an awkward hug,
“It’s good to see you, nephew. You look very different than the last time we spoke. If anything I would say that, you look like you have been enjoying your freedom. This sabbatical has done wonders for you.”
Uncle Mathew continued
Kevin rolled his eyes,
“Are we calling me being kicked out of the family a sabbatical now?”
His uncle smiled softly,
“Kevin, I want you to know that I never meant for that to happen and it was just an unfortunate…”
Kevin interrupted,
“I am not here to hear about the past so let’s just focus on the presence. How much does the Williams family need?”
Always used to being in charge, Uncle Mathew pursed his lips and answered,
“Actually… it’s not a lot of money”
Kevin raised his eyebrows,
“How much is… ‘Not a lot’ Uncle Mathew?”
“Twelve billion”
Kevin was speechless,
“…”
He then laughed,
“Twelve billion isn’t a lot of money!? You kicked me out of the family for investing a lot less than that…”
Uncle Mathew paused,
“Well, we were wrong. It turns out that your bad investment is the only thing that can save our family’s dynasty. Can we borrow Twelve Billion dollars?”
Kevin stood up and replied,
“I suddenly remembered that I have something very important to do. Don’t worry I’ll see myself out.”
Uncle Mathew quickly stopped him,
“If you don’t give us the Twelve billion, the Williams family legacy will be destroyed. Kevin please I’m begging you… you are part of this family and you are the only one that can save us from going bankrupt. I already asked my men to complete the two requests that you mentioned. So, please you can’t leave now… I’ll do anything.”
Kevin replied calmly to the man, revealing his charming smile,
“Uncle, it’s not that I don’t want the Williams family to get through this crisis but if I’m being honest, I don’t think I have twelve billion dollars to give you.”
Mathew was impatient now,
“Kevin, are you seriously going to play dumb with me right now? Have you not checked the value of your stocks? Your grandfather and I know that the twenty percent of the shares you invested in the Sunset Haven group is worth at least Forty billion dollars now and the value is going up as we speak!”
Uncle Mathew paused for a moment and softened his tone,
“Kevin, you lost every conscience but you must not forget that you are also a member of the William’s family. This is your legacy that I’m trying to protect.”
Kevin felt his heart beat raise as he talked to himself,
“I have over Forty billion dollars!? Just this morning I had only fifty dollars in my savings… this is a dream come true! I can finally build my empire.”
After a long silence, Kevin replied calmly to the man he once feared,
“Uncle, you didn’t seem to care about my legacy when you kicked me out of the family two years ago. Why should care about it now?”
Uncle Mathew was speechless as Kevin continued,
“I have a wife now! Did you know that? We got engaged the day that you decided to desert me. I’m a son in-law to another family. Why should I show loyalty to you over them?”
Kevin clenched his fist tightly and finished,
“If it wasn’t for the fact that you were all going bankrupt, I don’t think you would have ever reached out to me again. You left me for dead now why should I bring you back to life?”
Uncle Mathew was silent for a few seconds then he said in a deep voice,
“Kevin I know what we did was wrong and I apologize to you on behalf of the family. We messed up but I’m begging you, your family needs you. The Williams dynasty will fall without your help.”
He paused for a moment as if he was making some kind of important decision.
Finally he looked up to Kevin with a firm gaze,
“Kevin you are willing to help the Williams family, I can help you become the president of the William’s media. All that it will take me is one day to formalize the formalities. Tomorrow, you’ll be able to take over the position. You will have your own company…”
Kevin smirked,
“Isn’t William’s media your wife’s company? You’re always quick to giving out other people’s property for your own benefit, aren’t you?”
Mathew countered,
“She would gladly give it to you to save the family’s company… William’s media is one of our most profitable profile companies. It’s the largest and most successful entertainment company in the whole of Veridonia. Think of all the celebs that we’ve signed, it will all be yours.”
Grinning his teeth, Kevin nodded and said,
“I accept your conditions. William’s media will be my first acquisition in my journey to create my own family empire but for now, I really need to leave. I have somewhere very important to be.”
Uncle Mathew paused,
“So, do we have a…”
Kevin interrupted,
“Yes! We have a deal.”
Uncle Mathew nodded,
“Thank you. I wasn’t sure you would help despite everything we did to you. I can’t even express how much this means to the family.”
Kevin smiled,
“We’re families and I hope this will help all of us remember that family is more important than money.”
Mathew nodded again,
“I might be two years late, but I have learnt that lesson.”
Leaving his family’s mansion, Kevin looked at his watch
“Oh no! I’ll be late for my high school re-union.”
Stepping on his motorbike, Kevin began driving as he thought to himself
“This will be the first time that I’ve seen everyone since we graduated. It’s been years. I’m really excited to go to the re-union and show them the man that I’ve become.”
Driving back home to change, Kevin smiled
“My luck is changing… I can feel it. By the end of today I’ll earn my family’s respect, my old classmates envy, my in-laws approval and most importantly, my wife’s love.”
On the other side of town, Lily walked down the hallway of the office and her co-workers giggling, she saw some of them looking at their phones and gaggling.
Through their gaps between them, Lily saw the video they were watching and was too ashamed to continue.
It was a video showing Kevin riding a smashed motorbike.
One of Lily’s co-workers smirked,
“This is so embarrassing. How is our chairwoman married to a man who rides a broken down motorbike? It looks like something you would find in a dump!”
Someone else cut in,
“I know! He is such a loser. It’s a miracle that they haven’t divorced yet…”
A tiny girl took a sip of water and interrupted,
“You’ll never guess what I heard earlier… He said he was going to buy the real DreamLover necklace for the chairman!
They all erupted into laughter,
“The real DreamLover necklace? Ridiculous! We’ve seen what he drives… how in the world would he be able to afford something as rare and luxurious like that? He isn’t just broke, he is delusional! Such an idiot.”
They all broke into laughter again until one of them turned, saw Lily and gasped,
“Chairman! So sorry… we didn’t know you were here.”
Lily paused and calmly replied,
“It seems like there are lots of things you don’t know. Maybe you should be more careful the next time you call someone an idiot.”
“We’re really sorry chairman… we will return to our desks immediately.”
Lily’s co-workers apologized
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily quickly returned to her office and closed the door.
Sitting down, she started sobbing as she thought to herself
“I know that Kevin isn’t an idiot. I just wish that he’d remember the man he used to be… maybe we can give our relationship a go then. I really don’t want to give up on him yet.”
When Kevin returned home, he opened the door and saw his mother in-law’s dull face, sitting in the living room watching TV.
When she heard the door, she opened her mouth and called him,
“Kevin, come here! I need to ask you something.”
Kevin nodded and quickly sat on the sofa next to Martha.
Martha continued,
“Kevin you and Lily have been married for two years now and still no grandchildren! Does your family have any genetic history or issues with fertility?”
“Hummm… No, my parents are very healthy and I’ve never heard of any genetic disease in our family”
Kevin nervously replied.
Martha raised the corners of her eyes and crossed her arms,
“Really? Come to think of it, it’s really weird that I don’t know anything about your parents. Maybe we should schedule a doctor’s appointment for you and your parents to get tested. That way we’ll if there are any bad genes on your side.”
Kevin awkwardly responded,
“There’s no need mom. I am very sure of my health… no need to waste money.”
Martha snapped,
“Why are you being so defensive? All that I’m asking is for your parents to get a checkup. Honestly Kevin, it’s for their own good. You know what, I won’t take no for an answer! Now, I have to go run an errand but I’ll see you tonight at the get-together.”
After his mother in-law left the room, Kevin shook his head and checked his watch,
“I need to change ASAP. I’ll deal with my mother in-law issue later but right now, I have a class re-union to attend.”
Kevin stood before the mirror, dressed in a simple yet impeccably fitted shirt and pants, giving a vision of understated elegance. The shirt, a crisp white, clung to his body like a second skin, accentuating his athletic build and hinting at the strength beneath. The fabrics showcased his broad shoulders and chest, revealing confidence in every stitch. His was equally captivating, his deep eyes held a magnetic allure and his chiseled jawline exuded determination.Kevin, feeling content with his appearance, whistled cheerfully as he descended towards the garage. He hopped on his motorbike and drove to one of the fanciest hotel in Veridonia, the Kings hotel. After parking his motorbike outside the lobby, he quickly fixed his wind-swept hair and stepped down on the pavement.“Kevin! Is that you?”A handsome man stucked his head out from an Audi A8 window and waved excitedly to Kevin. The moment Kevin saw him, his eyes was filled with surprise“Tyler! Look at you… you haven’t aged a day.
Just as Kevin’s butt touched chair, Kate responded indifferently,“Sorry, I’m saving this seat for Jessica.”“Huh!? I thought Jessica was sitting over there”Kevin pointed to the beautiful woman sitting seven or eight seats away from them. His face was full of confusion.Kate frowned and looked very unhappy. She raised her hands and covered her nose and said in a muffled voice,“You sort of stink and I feel so uncomfortable. Can I please change seats?”Kevin was stunned. He raised his arms and sniffed his armpit area, it didn’t smell. He had just changed before coming to the re-union.“This woman must have problems with her nose.”Kevin thought to himself.“Kevin! You haven’t taken a shower for few days, have you?”One of the guys askedA female classmate sitting next to him quickly said,“Kevin c’mon now, I’ll change seats with you. Don’t make the beauty breathe in bad air so she will be able to eat.”Kevin didn’t want to talk but at that time his old friend, Zach walked over and pul
CHAPTER TENAt the same moment, Kevin was struggling with what to do about his clothes. He walked to the mall and looked around. Most of the suits were not his style. He felt that none of these suits fit him very well. Finally, his only solution was to call the secretary that Uncle Mathew has arranged for him that afternoon. She was very efficient… in less than an hour, she got someone to make a simple hand-made suit and had it sent to Kevin. He folds the suit under his arms as he rode his electric scooter back to his neighborhood. As he entered the house, he saw his wife Lily standing in front the mirror in the living room admiring the DreamLover on her neck.It seemed like his wife was very satisfied with the gift he had given her.She quickly pulled it on the moment she received. With the necklace on her neck, she became more noble and elegant. As Kevin walked back, Lily saw him from the mirror and instantly changed her exhilarated expression. She looked away to check her clothes
CHAPTER ELEVENAt that moment, Martha stepped in again and snapped at Kevin,“Kevin!”After giving Kevin a warning look, Martha smiled and stepped in front of Drake.“Drake… Kevin is younger than you so he doesn’t know how to control his tongue. Why are you arguing with him anyway and where are your parents? Why didn’t I see them come today?”Martha sought to shift the subject to divert everyone’s focus away from her daughter, Lily.Drake was fuming with anger but he kept his cool and responded to Martha,“My parents are at the overseas, monitoring the family’s business. They aren’t lazy like you! You don’t have anything to do all day long, do you? You have your little son-in-law to be your hands and feet.”Drake’s words made Martha extremely embarrassed. In that moment, a matured older voice interrupted them“What in heaven’s name is everyone doing here!?”“Grandma!”Drake’s face lit upHe glanced behind him and noticed someone aiding Mrs. Jones Hannah, the family’s eldest and most r
That night when they got back to their house, Kevin went to his room and waited for Lily.As she got to the room and was about to lay down on the bed, Kevin looked at her and said confidently“Don’t worry Lily… Drake Jones will not be able to form a deal with the CEO of Williams Media. No one would be able to except you.”After he said this, he didn’t care how Lily would react. He turned around, closed his eyes and went to sleep.Lily was stunned for a moment. She didn’t expect Kevin to actually read her mind but what he said really left her speechless. She wasn’t entirely sure if he was right but if she went to talk to Williams Media about the partnership, she would definitely succeed. How could she be so sure that this won’t be done by anyone except her?“He sure do know how to annoy someone!”Lily said to herself.Rolling her eyes, Lily turned off the light and put the whole thing out of her mind and went to sleep. After Lily left for work the next morning, Kevin also headed out.U
CHAPTER THIRTEENKevin stood patiently by his wrecked scooter, waiting to see who Kate’s reliable connection was.“Auntie!”Kate called out like a small childShe just went to her right side and leaned closer to her as she whispered some words into her ears. When the other two employees and the two security guard that was Kate and Kevin saw Miss. Claire, they immediately greeted her“Miss. Claire, good morning.”Claire just replied to their greetings casually,“Good morning…”Then she turned her attention to Kevin and said sternly,“Hey young man! If you don’t want to involve the police in this matter, apologize to her right this instant!”Hearing her, Kevin laughed out aloud“Oh really now!? Why should I even listen to you? If you want to call the police, please go ahead…I didn’t crash into her anyway, she crashed into me. So what am I afraid of?”One of the by-standers said,“He doesn’t even know the production manager! He really should be fired.”“Just wait… miss. Claire will defin
The news of the new CEO had already spread around the company.Everyone who saw Kevin smile and greeted him, “One needs to leave good impression on the new CEO.”One of the employees said, smiling wildlyOf course, when they first saw him they felt like his dressing was in contrast to his surroundingsHe took an elevator to the CEO office and after entering his office, he sat on the big leather chair and looked at Claire briefly who entered the room with him.“Do you have anything else to talk to me about?”He flipped open some of the folders on the table and asked casually as he looked at the contents in the folder.Kate and Claire looked at each other.Claire gave Kate a smile to comfort her, she took two steps forward and said,“Sir, about what happened today… I am really very sorry and about the matter of Kate signing her contract,”Claire paused before finishing her sentenceKevin didn’t even raise his head as he chuckled to himself“Sign her contract?”“Yes”Claire awkwardly rep
CHAPTER FIFTEENWhen Lily got home, she pondered a lot on what had happened at the Jones’s mansion. The more she thought about it, the more she uncomfortable she felt.In the eyes of everyone in the Jones family, this was an impossible taskBut now this hopeless task fell on her and she had no idea how she would speak to the new CEO of Williams Media. The more she thought about it, the more irritated she became. Finally, Lily decided to call Monica, her best friend to keep her company. She also wanted to know if she’ll have any good suggestions. After Monica came over and the two of the chatted for a while, Lily felt a little less freaked out.Monica got up and walked to the fridge. She took a can of soda and asked Lily if she would drink.“Why isn’t Kevin here?”Lily smiled helplessly,“When I left early this morning, he was already gone… I don’t know where he went to but he still hasn’t come back”Monica curled her lips as she sat on the sofaShe leaned closer to Lily and said,“I r
After about five days, she would be like any other normal person, and she wouldn't be able to use medicinal herbs to regain what she had lost. I can't believe that this pill can do all that, Kevin marveled. His thoughts were interrupted by an unfamiliar ringtone. For a second, he wondered if there was a burglar in the house, but then he realized that the sound was coming from his pocket.Who would be making a video call to Penny in the middle of the night? Could it be her boyfriend? Kevin wondered. By reflex, he answered the call. A moment later, he saw a beautiful woman standing in front of her closet picking out clothes. Oops, didn't mean to see that, Kevin thought to himself. She looked very familiar to him, but he just couldn't place her. While he was looking at her, trying to figure out who she was, the woman turned around to see why nobody was talking yet. When she saw Kevin, she screamed and disconnected the call. That's when Kevin realized that she was the young woman whose gr
"How much do you want?" His father asked him, as expected, Wyatt started to freak out. Mike said, "You think money grows on trees? Didn't I just give you that much a few days ago?" How could Wyatt Tripp not go ballistic? He'd worked his entire life to build up his business and now his son was just giving his money away. Mike was frustrated by his father's response. He'd only gotten in this situation because he was trying to get elected student leader. If his father wasn't willing to help, he might have to tell his classmates the truth. "What are you talking about, Dad? School’s going great. And my teachers are fantastic." Mike told his father, laying it on thick. "It's definitely a serious program."“What the hell are you talking about? When did I ask you about school?" Wyatt shouted into his phone. I don't give a crap if you like the place or not. "Don't worry, Dad, I'm doing great." He continued. "But it would really help if you could transfer some money into my account.""I'll tra
"It wouldn't be a great idea to trick her like that." He really didn't want to make a bad impression on Penny. "No problem, Mike." Luther continued. "If Penny helps you pay the bill, you can use it as an excuse to get closer to her. You could even connect with her online to arrange to repay her and to get to know her better." Mike got really excited by this idea.He slapped Luther on the back and said, "I like the way you think. It's a good thing I brought you two guys along." When Kevin heard this, he quickly headed back to the VIP room. As he got to the door, Penny was walking out. Kevin came up with a plan of his own. As Penny brushed against him, he used the light touch that he'd learned about in the secret guide and took her phone and wallet.Let's see what Mike does now. Kevin smirked as he slipped the items into his jacket. With all his posturing, he isn't really that strong. Let's see him show his true colors. When Kevin returned to his seat and sat down, Mike and his two budd
"That has to be disappointing. You think you're more handsome than me? Everyone knows that just isn't true." Kevin teased him. "What do you mean by that?" Mike retorted as he slammed his fist on the table. "Don't be angry, Mike. This whole thing really isn't worth it." Lionel tried to persuade his friend. Then Luther tried to calm him down. "Relax, Mike. You're absolutely right. Kevin must be jealous of you. That's why I said there's something wrong with this pill.""You still don't understand, do you? Both you and your father were cheated by someone. This isn't an augmentation pill at all. Kevin told them bluntly. An augmentation pill is more of a light blue color. Plus it contains some floral ingredients which gives it a beautiful fragrance. Take another look at the medicinal pill you just gave our professor." Kevin continued."It's obviously the wrong color and has no fragrance at all." They were all stunned to hear him say this. Even Penny reacted and stared keenly at Kevin. Mike
"Don't be so modest, Mike. Who is better qualified to be our class leader?" Luther chimed in. The rest of the students just sat there quietly and watched the show that the three of them were putting on. But they didn't want to seem ungrateful. So they were willing to go along with the idea of electing Mike to the position."Since no one has any objections, then how could I decline? But let's just call it a temporary position. If anyone feels that I'm not carrying my weight, just say so." Mike declared as he raised his glass to toast his classmates.Professor Murdock stayed out of the discussion. And quietly observed her students as they drank their wine and socialized with each other. Meanwhile, Penny just sat quietly by the window nursing her glass to mute. Her classmates were too intimidated by her to go up and talk to her. While this was going on, Mike took Lionel aside and asked him to go down to his car and bring back a red gift box that he'd left in the trunk. Lionel came back a
"Since you think this is just a bus pass, I guess I'll just put it back in my wallet." Kevin said as he started to take it back from the concierge. “Well, since you've already taken it out, why don't we give it a try?" Mike replied. He obviously didn't want to pass up this opportunity to make Kevin look like a fool. So he ran things up and added."Let's see what the hotel staff can do with it." While the crowd was laughing at Kevin, the hotel employees were staring in disbelief. They weren't sure how to defuse the situation. The employee who was holding Kevin's card started to get very nervous when she took a good look at it. During their training, all of the employees of the Whistler Hotel had been required to memorize the appearance of the Supreme VIP card. And that's exactly what Kevin had handed her. Cook had explained to them that there were only five cards like this in all of Veridonia. And they were only given to the hotel's most prestigious clients. The group of students saw t
"Unfortunately, the Whitsler Hotel's largest room was only available to special guests." Mitchell Cook didn't mind if the largest private rooms remained empty most of the time. It was more important to have them available for his wealthiest clients. Since the staff hadn't been alerted by Cook that there would be a VIP group this evening, they assumed that this bunch of students didn't have the proper reservation."What kind of rule is that? I don't have a membership card, and I'm not from around here. All we need is a room. I don't care how much it costs. I'm willing to cover it." Mike said confidently."I'm sorry, sir. Without a VIP membership card, we won't be able to open the room for you." The concierge replied firmly. "Then can I apply for a membership card right now?" Mike asked. You could tell he was extremely disappointed to see his plans fall apart like this."I'm sorry, sir. Our largest private room is only available for our most exclusive members. Als
"Please, just say it. You won't hurt my feelings." Kevin exclaimed as he watched the road. "Just look at what happened in the parking lot. Your classmates were all looking down on you because they thought you didn't have a car. It seems that you invite this kind of ridicule, “she said bluntly."If you're too embarrassed to take anything from your wife, then you really should jump at this opportunity." Professor Murdock told him earnestly. "The School for the Healing Arts is the greatest opportunity in your life. Just work hard and focus. If you have any questions, you can always come to me. This is your chance to make a name for yourself.""I understand what you're saying, Professor. I'll definitely work harder from now on," he replied. Kevin stopped at a crosswalk and said to her very sincerely, "But could you please give me my phone back first? I promise I won't take it out during class."“Haven’t you been listening to me?" she snapped at him
"Mike's absolutely right," Lionel agreed. Kevin, "Professor Murdock really took it easy on you today. That's why you're being allowed to come along to tonight's dinner. Don't put any of your classmates in an embarrassing position. Just take a taxi. If you don't have enough money on you for a cab or to call for a ride on your own, I'll give you a few bucks to cover you. How about $20?" Then he pulled some cash out of his pocket and offered it to Kevin.Everyone around them laughed when they saw him do this. They really thought Kevin was pathetic. Kevin frowned as he looked at the money in Lionel's hand. He wondered what the heck was wrong with these guys. "Aren't you overwhelmed by my generosity?" Lionel grinned as he patted Kevin on the shoulder. "There's no need to thank me. After all, we're classmates.""Did I tell you I needed a ride? “Kevin replied very coolly. "What do you mean? Don't tell me you drove here." Mike sneered."You really drove here, Kevin? Quick, show everyone what
