Chapter 10
For a while, silence hovered and Ethan felt he was the only one who was feeling the tension. Apart from having a very high sense of impersonation. Ethan could feel the weight of unspoken words from his grandfather's mouth. Finally, his grandfather broke the ice. “I believe you are yet to explain your lateness, Ethan” Ethan hesitated, not even having the dandiest thing come to his mind. He was completely blank on what to say and he knew there was no way he wouldn't stammer if he opened his mouth. “I urr…”, Ethan began, swallowing hard. “Sit up straight and project your voice properly” Ethan closed his mouth and sat up. “We don't stutter in the Wayne family, I've warned you. Now answer the question.” Ethan took a moment before he opened his mouth again. “I didn't get up on time” “Your alarm goes off at 1 a.m, 3 a.m and 4 a.m. If you didn't get up at all between these times, that means you didn't study. I believe you have a test today, am I correct?” “Yes sir”, Ethan answered idly, not even sure himself. “And you're grossly aware that your grades, not just as valedictorian but as a Wayne, are highly relevant in your future?” “Yes grandfather” His grandfather gave a good gap of silence before responding. The driver turned to the right and Ethan noticed the building they were rounding. It was the headquarters of Wayne & Co. They soon got to the VIP garage . The car eased into the massive but almost empty space and it took a moment for Ethan to realize why. It was for Mr. James alone and each car he owned had its own space with tags on them for recognition. The car eased into one of the spaces without a tag and as it came to a stop, the platform automatically raised, a very small height however. The garage, filled with guards from stretch to stretch, reminded Ethan of one of his favorite Marvel films. Odd and intriguing - he was only getting to understand and assert the power of riches. The driver came down from the car but two of the guards walked towards the car and they both stood by either of the doors. “A new alarm clock and a new schedule will be prepared before you arrive home from school today. I do not want to have any such report or to have to witness such lateness and such indiscipline on your part. Do you understand?” “Yes grandfather.” Mr. James gave a signal with his fingers and the guards opened the door. “Claude will take you to school in the BMW. Let me know when you've arrived”, he said as he placed a foot out of the car. He had his gold walking rod in his hand that he didn't really need anyway. Coming fully out of the car, the guards got the rod and the Prada work bag, from the car. Ethan alighted as well and he watched the door slide open, two guards beside his grandfather. They walked in and the door slid closed, making a loud baritone sound. The light above it flashed red and Ethan got an inkling that only his grandfather could grant access. “Mr Ethan, your car is ready to go”, one of the guards came up to tell him. That was enough to snap him out of his pensiveness. He walked with the guard that had taken his bag from him as well. The guard got the door and Claude, who he later came to know was his father's personal driver, was already in the car and had it started. He got in and the door was shut tightly. ******************************** Oh yeah. How hadn't he guessed? He was at The Prestigious University. The car came to a stop at the gates and the security guards came around to check the car. “Oh oh..”, Ethan muttered, a little bit apprehensive as he felt they'd recognize him. But they seemed more surprised at the car than who was in it. The tinted window on the passenger door was let down and the security guard peered inside. Ethan held his breath. Would they still recognize him? “Ahh.. Mr. Claude, it's you” “Certainly”, Claude responded, his face straighter than a ruler. His voice was dark and mysterious, like the sounds you heard in the dark but never really knew who it was. It had an aura to it too not to mention Mr Claude's stature and composure was a weary one as well, and everything he was seemingly matched up. It was dark and interesting at the same time even if it often put Ethan off. “Ethan's a … bit late today”, the security guard said, glancing at Ethan. Of course they couldn't recognize him. He was different now. He was Ethan Wayne. “We encountered trouble on the way but everything is fine” “Oh right”, he said, tapping on the car door with his fingers. The way he lingered, Ethan suspected he wanted something but didn't intend to do it in front of Ethan at the same time. They spent a minute in awkward silence with the weird security guard before he backed away and signaled for the gates to be opened. The gates swung open and the car cruised into the school. Ethan felt a wave of nerves come over him as they passed the theaters and other faculties before his. It was still funny to him that he'd actually been dead and half of him wanted to know how much the school would react to it. The car finally pulled up in front of his faculty and he could see the usual buzzing nature of the student hallway. They had had less and less lectures since the beginning of their final exams and the student hallway was everyone's new favorite pastime. “10.28 a.m sir”, he heard Claude say. “Are you late for your test?” “No. I don't think so”, Ethan responded, taking out his phone. “You should not forget to call Mr. James and let him know you've arrived and what inconveniences we experienced on the way” “Inconveniences..”, Ethan repeated, his tone unsure if he had intended that to be a question or just a statement. “Don't forget”, Mr Claude's eerie voice came through. “Right” When the call was declined twice, he sent a text message to his grandfather instead and then took a moment to breathe. “Shall I get the door?” Ethan looked up at Claude. Why the hell should he be nervous? He was a freaking Wayne now.Chapter 11Ethan stepped out of the car and was surprised to see that for the first time, the stares he received from his schoolmates weren't disgusted or demeaning, but instead were met with smiles and winks. He noticed that some of the girls even gave him flirtatious looks.Let's give that a bit of a tweak:This was a significant shift from his usual reception, and Ethan was perplexed as he made his way through the school hall and into the cafeteriaAs he mulled over the events that had led him to this point, Ethan wondered, 'How did I go from being run over by a truck to becoming Ethan Wayne? And why do all of these people suddenly like me?Ethan's thoughts were interrupted when he heard Lucas call out to him, "Yo, Ethan!" Ethan's expression hardened at the sound of Lucas' voice. With a face that betrayed his loathing for Lucas, Ethan turned to face him as he approached. Lucas put his hands on Ethan's shoulders and said, "You look down today, did something happen? Did someone p
Chapter 12Ethan stood up, straightening his shirt and smoothing his hair. He couldn't help but feel a sense of nervousness. He had yet to have a conversation with William Wayne, and he wasn't sure what to expect. Ethan followed the maid through the house and into the study, where William Wayne sat behind a large, mahogany desk. The room was filled with the scent of aged leather and pipe tobaccoWilliam looked up from his paperwork as Ethan entered. “Ah, Ethan,”he said, motioning for Ethan to take a seat. “I’m worried about you,it's unlike you to make up late even after all your alarm. It should not happen again Ethan. The Wayne are known for their punctuality you shouldn't spoil the family name, am I clear?”. ‘Yes sir’ Ethan replied ‘How was your test?’ William asked ‘It was Good sir’ Ethan replied William gave a satisfied nod, then spoke again. “'I'll have the staff ensure that your schedule and alarm clock are adjusted accordingly. In the meantime, I'd like for you to att
Chapter 13 Fuming, Mr. Thompson walked out of the meeting room and headed for his car. He was seething with anger at the thought of Ethan inheriting the company. He clenched his teeth, determined to find a way to undermine theMr. Thompson stormed into his mansion, his mood dark and brooding. He didn’t bother taking off his coat or removing his shoes before he called for his family to gather for a meeting. His wife and two children looked at him in concern as he stalked back and forth, his hands clenched into fists. 'We need to talk,' he said, his voice tight with suppressed rage.Aurora, Mr. Thompson’s daughter, stepped forward, her face a mask of worry.'What’s happened, Daddy ?' she asked, her voice soft.Mr. Thompson stopped pacing and fixed her with a piercing
Chapter 14The dean’s office was dimly lit, the heavy curtains drawn over the windows. Ethan and Liam took their seats in the two chairs that faced the dean’s desk, the silence thick and oppressive. The dean leaned forward, his hands folded in front of him.'Gentlemen, I have been made aware of the events that occurred in Professor David’s class this afternoon.'Ethan and Liam both opened their mouths to speak, but the dean held up a hand to silence them. The dean’s voice was low and measured, but his words were as sharp as a blade.'Ethan, I am deeply disappointed in you. You have always been a model student, and to see you involved in something like this is disturbing, to say the least.'Ethan hung his head, the shame burning in his chest. 'Sir, I didn’t cheat. Liam was the one who was trying to cheat off me.'The dean turned his gaze to Liam, his eyes narrowed in scrutiny. 'And what do you have to say for yourself, Mr.?”Liam’s expression was a picture of remorse, but Ethan could s
Chapter 15Ethan sighed."Thanks for the offer, Alex, but I can’t ask you to erase those posts. My grandfather already knows about it. Besides, this is my mess. I’ll deal with it on my own."Alex’s brow furrowed. “You sure? It could help to get the heat off you.’Ethan’s jaw tightened. “No, I’m not sure. But this is what I have to do.’Ethan took a deep breath. ‘What I do need you to do is dig into the Davis family. Lucas Davis, specifically. See what you can find. The more I know, the better prepared I’ll be when I buy the school after graduation.’Alex’s eyes widened. “Buy the school? Damn, you really have it all planned out, don’t you?”Ethan smirked. “Just call me a long-term thinker.”‘We’ll talk tomorrow,’ Ethan said.Ethan hung up the phone, his mind still buzzing with plans for the future. As he pondered his next move, a knock sounded at the door. His maid stood outside, holding a tray of food.'Dinner, sir,' she said with a smile.Ethan took the tray and thanked her. He ate
Chapter 16Ethan blinked away the blurriness, his ears ringing with the echoes of the strange place he'd just been in. As his eyes adjusted to the harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room, he saw a nurse leaning over him, checking his vitals.'His vitals are becoming stable, Doctor,' the nurse said, glancing over at a man in a white coat standing nearby.Ethan's mind was still racing with questions, but before he could ask any of them, the doctor approached his bedside. The doctor smiled, his gaze assessing but reassuring. 'Good to see you awake, Ethan. You’ve had quite a scare. Do you remember what happened?'Ethan shook his head, his thoughts still reeling. 'I…I’m not sure. One minute I was at home, and then I woke up here.'The doctor nodded. 'You suffered a cardiac event, most likely caused by stress. But the good news is, you’re going to be okay.’Ethan sat up in the bed, wincing slightly at the tug of the IV in his arm. 'How long have I been here?'The doctor consulted a
CHAPTER 17After an eventful day, Ethan finally made it back to his family's mansion, because he only had one class so he didn’t see the need to stay on campus. His feet were heavy with exhaustion. As he passed through the grand foyer, he glanced at the portraits of his ancestors that lined the walls, their gazes seeming to follow him.Retreating to his room, Ethan closed the door behind him with a heavy sigh. The events of the past week had been a whirlwind, and the conversation with the figure in the strange, surreal realm still lingered in his mind. After taking a long, hot shower, he slipped into some comfortable clothes and sank onto his bed, staring out the window at the setting sun. He tried to push the thoughts away, but the more he tried, the more they seemed to swirl around him like the clouds that had surrounded him in that other place. Retreating to his room, Ethan closed the door behind him with a heavy sigh. The events of the past week had been a whirlwind, and the con
CHAPTER 18Ethan recoiled in surprise as Madison pressed her lips against his. Pushing her away, he glared at her with a mix of confusion and anger. 'What are you doing?' he demanded, his voice laced with disbelief.Madison looked hurt, her expression shifting from playful to wounded. 'I thought you liked me,' she said, her voice tremulous.'I liked you in my past life, before you betrayed me,'He whispered to himself. As Ethan turned to leave the room, Madison gasped, her eyes wide. 'Wait, please!' she said, her voice desperate.Ethan stopped, but didn’t turn around. 'What?' he asked, his tone cold.'Don't go,' Madison pleaded. 'Please, Ethan. I can make you happy.'Ethan scoffed, but before he could speak, Madison pulled off her shirt, revealing her bare chest. 'Please,' she whispered, her voice hoarse with emotion.Ethan froze, his mind racing.Alright:Just as Ethan was about to respond, he caught a glint of light in the corner of his eye. His gaze shifted, and he saw it: a small
