Chapter 3
“Maddie…” His sentence was cut short as she rushed him in a hug. He hugged back but slowly. His mind couldn't wrap around how she knew. “What happened? Why didn't you call me? Look at … you… you look…?”, she paused, scrutinizing him with her eyes, expecting his body to be badly battered. “ … Benji didn't even know where you were..” “I. . I lost my phone. But I'm alright, it's fine” “You're not. They beat you up Ethan. You know better than to stand up against those boys” “You … know what happened?”, Ethan asked in a more concerned than surprised manner. Maddison's eyes widened, like she'd let herself be caught off guard. “How did you know?” “Claire told me. She said she'd seen you punch Lucas and then they chased you like a thief. And then Phil said he saw you covered in blood, staggering into the cafeteria. I bugged that one and she wouldn't even tell me a thing. I was so scared, Ethan. I…” “I'm sorry. I'm sorry I scared you”, he said, standing as he pulled her to himself. “Don't ever do that again. Please. Just stay out of their way, ok? We are just a few weeks away from graduation and you've been doing so well as valedictorian. I don't want anything to happen to you”, Maddie said, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah I will. I will” “Promise”, Maddison said almost immediately, looking him in the eyes. “Look Maddie…” “You have to promise.”, She said with a tone of finality. Ethan took a deep breath, not knowing what was more exhausting to him. “I promise” “You sure, pinky swear?”. She said, bringing out her little finger. “Maddison” She giggled and he laughed a little as well. Just then, the doctor came in again. “You have another visitor Ethan.” “Oh, who's…?” He stopped halfway as he stood up. “Mr. Trevor..” ********************* Ethan stood in the middle of the room, his heart pounding for no reason. The silence was unnerving and Ethan didn't know what to expect. His first thoughts went back to the incident yesterday. As valedictorian, he shouldn't have punched Lucas first. Any one who was in that room would have testified rightly to that. But there weren't any witnesses, at least as far as his knowledge of the administrative board was, he couldn't see anyone he didn't already know had a position there. He couldn't see Lucas either. Nor Lucas' cronies. The vice chancellor cleared her throat finally breaking the silence in the room. “Ethan Wayne, am I correct?” “Yes ma'am” She nodded slowly, taking up a piece of paper that seemed to have some kind of picture footage on it. The next piece of paper on the desk seemed the same as well and Ethan was slowly beginning to get an inkling of the situation. Or so he did. “Yesterday, by 6.00 p.m to be precise, you were caught on camera physically assaulting a boy named Lucas Davis, am I correct?” “Not exactly ma'am. I wasn't assaulting…” “It's a yes or no question, Ethan. Answer the question.” “No ma'am” “But the camera footage shows otherwise” “He instigated it ma'am” “Instigated?” “He attempted to bully me by dragging me back” “Dragging you back? And about what time did this happen because the camera footage does not capture anything of such and witnesses claim you punched first as well so how then and when did this “dragging” begin?” “If the camera footage captured me punching him, it should have captured the origin of the whole scene as well” “Supposedly smart but unfortunately for you Ethan, it did not. As upcoming valedictorian, you broke “The Vale Code” and we have orders from above to rusticate you with immediate effect. You are not to demand for your results as they will not be released to you nor will any of your awards be sent to you. All achievements are nullified and you have 24 hours to get your things and leave as your school ID number and pass will be completely useless after this time frame. Your twenty four hours has commenced” Ethan just stood there like he had not just heard what she'd said. “I'm sorry.. I … I don't understand. I didn't.. I .. did you just say I'm suspended.?” “For a definite period of time which is forever, if that's another way to put it.” “This … This .. this has to be a joke. This is a joke” “Unfortunately Ethan it's not. There are no lights, or cameras nor do I wear or possess a clown uniform or have ever owned tickets to a stand up comedy show not even say that I have ever been one. Your twenty four hours is counting already” “I don't understand.. I .. don't…” “What don't you understand Mr. Ethan?!”She shot out suddenly, rising to her feet, those around her completely taken aback. “You have been rusticated, expelled, ejected, dismissed, cast out and banished from this institution of learning! What don't you understand?! And I thought you were top of the class? Surely there’s been some lowly corruption in the system or do you suddenly not possess the capability to hear and comprehend simple, proper and accurate sentences?! You are no longer a student of this institution!”, She shouted at the top of her voice at him, her body pushed forward. She adjusted her shirt and pushed her glasses in as she stared at him down, a frighteningly angry expression on her face. “This isn't possible. You can't just expel me. You didn't even listen to what .. I had to... Surely, there needs to be some more investigation. I wasn't the one who assaulted him. I'm the victim. I'm.. I'm.. I'm the victim h..he.. here.. here. I'm. .. I'm.. “, Ethan's mouth trembled as he spoke looking from one director to another. “I'm. .. I'm.. I'm.. please.. you haven't even… he didn't even give his.. his own.. testi.. I .. I … I'm… Please. I can't.. I can't be ex.. expelled. Graduation is in… few.. few weeks… ple.. please.. you have to.. to… to.. to… to lis.. listen.” “Even if you were to be the victim Mr Ethan, it wouldn't change a thing. You have been expelled and that's that. Meeting over!”, She roared her last word, hitting the imitation of a court hammer she had on the desk. “I'm … I'm the victim! I'm the victim! I'm the one who got beat up! I'm the one! He should be expelled, not me! I'm not the..” Ethan's voice broke in between words, his voice rising and falling like a broken saxophone. His lips trembled and tears streamed freely down his eyes. “I'm the victim!”, he screamed. “Security! Get security Trevor and get this mad boy out of here!” “Mr. Trevor please. Please… please, I'm.. not.. I'm.. I'm.. I'm … te..tell…telling the truth. Mr.. Mr.. Mr. Trevor.. I'm the victim. I'm.. I'm.. the victim please” Mr Trevor looked away and Ethan made an attempt to get his attention. “Please.. please Mr.. Mr.. Trevor .. I'm… I'm a victim. I'm a victim.. pleaseee” “Where?!”, Mr. Trevor shouted, shaking off his arm from Ethan's slow reaching grip. “Where are the scars?! You are as clean as a newborn sheep while that poor boy is bruised and beaten all over!” Ethan didn't understand. “What?” His voice was a slow, trembling whisper, the most quiet in the room. “Even if you were telling the truth which I know you are, you should have known better than to go against the Chancellor's son”, Mr. Trevor said to Ethan close up in a same raspy whisper that was just a tone higher. “Security!” “Leave Ethan. Go now or I'll be forced to call security” “Call security now, Mr. Trevor!” *******************Chapter 4Mr. Trevor stared hard at Ethan as he took his phone to his ear.“Get your team up here at the administrative board room”“No.. no! I'm the victim. I am the victim!”, Ethan shouted, scattering the documents atop the table. His eyes were reddish and tears darkened them even more.“I'm the victim!”Ethan pulled down the large drawer mounted against the wall closest to the door in anger and rage.“I'm the victim!”“Security, get this boy out of here!”They held onto Ethan, taking him by the arms. “No! Let me go!”He struggled, kicking and pushing against their hard, strong grip. He shouted and struggled, even holding onto the door as they attempted to carry him out.“Let me go!”They soon loosened his grip on the door. Handcuffed, they shoved him into the school's security shuttle. Ethan breathed heavily as the bulky tears streamed down his eyes. The men monitored him as he cleared the apartment the school had built and awarded him personally. While at it, a knock came to the
Chapter 5“Arghhh!”, he shouted, hitting the landline in anger against the glass box. Ethan breathed heavily, his fist clenched in obvious, physical anger though he was inwardly happy he hadn't broken the glass nor the landline. He'd seen a policeman around the corner and he was certainly not prepared to go to jail.“Better you were in cell than outside”He still had nowhere to go. He ran a hand through his hair trying not to lose it.“God, where am I gonna go?”He breathed in and then out, finally deciding to call his girlfriend. He pressed down the number buttons, his heart hoping that he'd hear her ever consoling voice as the buzzing sound began. He held onto the receiver like it was some fragile item but the call ended up terminating with no response. He dialed again, this time slowly, like heart and hope were breaking into bits in him. The buzzing began, taking longer than usual. But there wasn't any response. “Hey Maddie.. urr.. this is Ethan. I … I'm really in a very bad state
Chapter 6He'd have knocked, perhaps they'd have had enough time.Perhaps.If the door wasn't already open. “Maddie?”, Ethan said softly, knowing what time it was. Madison's neighborhood was unusually quiet and they seemed to like to keep the peace. Once, he'd tickled Maddison so hard, she had almost laughed her head off. Her next door neighbor had come over the very next day to complain of how disturbing they were. That would have been a one off if they had been visited by two other neighbors on the same day, saying exactly the same thing.Weird, right?Ethan thought it was more than just weird. It was crazy. Ethan closed the door behind him, his mind switching back to why the door was open. Maddie never left her door open. At least as far as he knew.He looked into the kitchen, wanting to call on Maddie but deciding otherwise. Perhaps she was sleeping.Perhaps she was so tired, she had to take her clothes off in the living room. Perhaps her lingerie too.A red gown, matching ling
Chapter 7 “He's dead”The line on the cardiographer straightened and the loud high pitched sound it made resounded in the room. The doctor, with head movement, signaled to the nurse.“Charge” A surge of electricity went through his body and Ethan felt his soul rise and then with a hard, sudden push back into his body. He could hardly open his eyes and when he tried, or so he thought, he saw the doctors backing up. His eyes felt weak and heavy and he was squinting.Or so he thought. To the doctors, he was very much dead.He closed his eyes and a thick cover of darkness covered him. A darkness that drifted to sleep. The next time he opened his eyes, the face of a young nurse looked down at him, an obvious brightness to her countenance. She looked like she was quite happy to meet him and Ethan couldn't tell why. He was more surprised that he was still alive and he knew he was still in the hospital from his surroundings. A man's figure appeared beside her unexpectedly to him, his face
Chapter 8Ethan couldn't tell what was more fascinating - the array of designer clothes, neatly laundered or the intriguing technology of the closet. Short shelves against the wall contained shoes polished to perfection that is if they weren't brand new. To his right, the jewels were arranged on headless dummies and in glass cases, the watches even had a special light to give a glow from underneath them. In fact, Ethan was lost in another world until he heard the doorbell from the door again.“Shit!”He looked near the clothes section to see if he'd get any casual wear. Some light Polo V-necks hung on the other end and Ethan rushed to put one on. He took one boxer shorts out of the drawers and put that on as well. Hopping on one leg in his completely rugged walk-in closet, he came out of the room and the door closed behind him. He walked to the door, finally pulling on the shorts to his waistline and he picked the card from its cardholder attached to the wall.He pressed against the r
Chapter 9Standing there, he couldn't still believe he was in the Household of The Wayne's. The Waynes! Scratch that. He was the grandson, Ethan Wayne. The rightful.. or actually, the only possible heir to the inheritance of The Wayne Fortune! That was completely mind-blowing. Nah, it just had to be cap.“This can't be true. This is a joke. She was probably lying”, he said to himself, one hand on his waist and one stroking his chin line. Just then, he noticed the mirror, built into the white doorless cupboard. On the tabletop just by the door, he could see his smartphone as well. Great. He could check what Ethan Wayne really looked like in today's age. He didn't even know what era he was living in to start with. He went over to get the phone first. Damn! It was the latest Givoni. It had his face recognition and as soon as he put it on, it verified his face and opened.Woah. First evidence. The time.April, 5th 2027He was living in the 21st century alright. In his world, this wou
Chapter 10For a while, silence hovered and Ethan felt he was the only one who was feeling the tension. Apart from having a very high sense of impersonation. Ethan could feel the weight of unspoken words from his grandfather's mouth. Finally, his grandfather broke the ice.“I believe you are yet to explain your lateness, Ethan”Ethan hesitated, not even having the dandiest thing come to his mind. He was completely blank on what to say and he knew there was no way he wouldn't stammer if he opened his mouth. “I urr…”, Ethan began, swallowing hard.“Sit up straight and project your voice properly”Ethan closed his mouth and sat up.“We don't stutter in the Wayne family, I've warned you. Now answer the question.”Ethan took a moment before he opened his mouth again.“I didn't get up on time”“Your alarm goes off at 1 a.m, 3 a.m and 4 a.m. If you didn't get up at all between these times, that means you didn't study. I believe you have a test today, am I correct?”“Yes sir”, Ethan answered
Chapter 11Ethan stepped out of the car and was surprised to see that for the first time, the stares he received from his schoolmates weren't disgusted or demeaning, but instead were met with smiles and winks. He noticed that some of the girls even gave him flirtatious looks.Let's give that a bit of a tweak:This was a significant shift from his usual reception, and Ethan was perplexed as he made his way through the school hall and into the cafeteriaAs he mulled over the events that had led him to this point, Ethan wondered, 'How did I go from being run over by a truck to becoming Ethan Wayne? And why do all of these people suddenly like me?Ethan's thoughts were interrupted when he heard Lucas call out to him, "Yo, Ethan!" Ethan's expression hardened at the sound of Lucas' voice. With a face that betrayed his loathing for Lucas, Ethan turned to face him as he approached. Lucas put his hands on Ethan's shoulders and said, "You look down today, did something happen? Did someone p
