The Gates

I stand in the middle of a chaotic street. People are running here and there, some lying under attack from the hideous creatures. The others try to fight with makeshift equipment.

I'm back. This incident is familiar to me. I died at a time like this when monsters suddenly appeared and separated my head from my body.

'This is your world when the gate opens,' the voice says.

I remember seeing a gate and monsters coming out of it. So this scene really happened right after I died.

I see that several people deliberately enter the gate. No! That is dangerous! They must be lost their mind to go in the direction where the monsters appeared.

Other people scream, venting their anger at the loss of those who were precious to them. Those people come running into the gate. Should I follow them?

An orc suddenly runs towards me and almost hits me.

"Keeeeuk!"

The orc is split in two when a ten-year-old girl suddenly hits its head with a street lamp post. I blink a few times, thinking how preposterous it is for a child to do such a thing. But the people around me do have strange powers.

'Don't worry. They can't see you or touch you.'

"What happened to them?" I point at the little girl who is currently fighting the goblins. Seeing from her swollen eyes, she must be cried before anger consumed her in fear.

'Due to the gate's appearance, the humans around it gained immense power. The closer they are to the first gate, the greater the power they generate. They are called heroes.'

Getting closer, huh? I was right in front of the gate when it appeared. But instead of power, what I got was just death. I laugh bitterly. What a shameful life.

"What's in the gate?" I get curious because the people who entered the gate have yet to come out.

"Why don't you just come in?"

I take a deep breath before stepping inside. Electric wave surrounds the gate, it looks more like a portal. I step in, and my body feels like it's being pulled inside.

A second later, I'm in a completely different place. It's a meadow with a clear sky. Goblins, orcs, even trolls are fighting alongside the humans that have entered inside.

The humans seem to win because only a few monsters are left alive. Some people stare at something in front of them. It's a system like mine.

'Just for this moment, I'll allow you to peek at their window.'

I approach one of them to see what they are they looking at.

[Kill the dungeon boss to take over this world]

I need clarification on what that means. Who is the dungeon boss, and where am I now. I don't understand.

"Hey, Oracle! At least explain to me what this is? Do your job!" I snap at the oracle.

'Why are you so stupid! Okay! Look around you. Doesn't it look different from your previous world?'

"I know that."

This place is more like a fantasy world where I was reincarnated. There are no modern buildings or equipment. This place is too fertile compared to the earth.

'Correct! This place is not earth!'

"You read my mind!"

'But this isn't Greyos, the place where you were reincarnated. This is another universe that no human should be able to come into.'

I'm starting to understand it. These kinds of concepts are often made into novels or comics. I'm lucky to spend my childhood with comic books from orphanage donors. Many comic artists and novelists have theorized that the world where the earth and the solar system are located is not the only world. There are other universes that are similar but different in some ways.

"But why do humans come in here so easily?"

'That's a mistake. That system and the gates should only be opened by The Creators, those who created every world. But the worlds are too old, and mistakes like this can happen, like ships and planes suddenly disappearing from your world when passing somewhere. But the mistake this time is just too big. The world becomes interconnected, and the creature inside it can go in and out easily.'

That's probably why the war happened. When the portal to another world opens, all creatures will try to rule the other world. That's very natural to happen, considering how greedy living creatures are.

'Right! The system calls the other world as the dungeon. To rule the dungeon, they must defeat the boss.'

"Did those orcs and goblins come to earth to defeat the boss? Who is the boss on earth?"

The oracle guffaws. There is nothing funny here. I've never seen anyone calling themselves the boss of the earth.

'Humanity.'

"What?"

'All humans on earth are the boss. They must kill all humans if they want to rule your previous world. That's a little bit special compared to the other worlds.'

I can't imagine how all the humans will be wiped out and the world will be overrun by those horrible creatures. Even though I don't live on earth now, I was there with all the beautiful memories of my family.

'Shouldn't you be curious about Greyos?'

"Is the gate between Earth and Greyos open?"

'Finally, you asked that. Come and see!'

There is a sound of finger's snap, and in a second, I'm in another place. It's earth, but it looks as clean and neat as it used to be. There are no monsters or gates to destroy it.

'This is twenty years after the first gate opened. Not that there are no more gates that appear. Instead, humans become the most superior creatures. They have ruled many dungeons and exterminated the other creatures. Humans become strong and unbeatable. Until one day...'

I'm moving again. It's the countryside. A gate opens there, and people surround it with scared faces. A group of uniformed men, who I assume is soldiers, are securing the gate.

"That's the hero!"

The crowd points at a handsome, well-built man. He looks familiar to me, but I can't remember who he is. As far as I can remember, I've never had an acquaintance as handsome as that. After all, it's twenty years after I died, and my friends must have become middle-aged men.

"Sir Gerald! I'm glad you came early!" A soldier approaches the handsome man.

Wait, Gerald? That guy isn't me, is he?

The oracle doesn't answer me. It gets anxious for some reason. However, I don't think I could possibly turn to be that handsome.

"Back off! My team will clear this gate."

I turn at the sound. A voice that has haunted me for decades. It's Amenus's voice.

"Amenus."

I clench my fists. Amenus is in front of me. I have to kill him.

I immediately run to him and throw my fists many times toward him. But my fist always penetrates his body; it only hits the air without touching him.

'I told you, you can't touch them. Vice versa. It's just a vision.'

"But I have to kill him!"

Bugh!

Amenus fall. I freeze. It isn't because of my fist. Amenus fall with his butt on the ground. That handsome Gerald punches him instead of me. He looks so angry, with his teeth chattering.

"Why don't we go in together, Hans. Maybe we can finish our business there." That Gerald calls Amenus as Hans. It must be his real name.

Amenus stand up with a sly smile. He casually dusts off his pants despite the blood at the corner of his lips.

"You are never tired of hunting me down. Alright, let's finish inside."

That Gerald must be very strong. If only I had been as strong and brave as that, my family definitely would not die because of me.

'Gerald is an S classes hero. Don't compare your old self with him. He's one of the strongest humans right now. Just like Amenus.'

"S Class? How about Amenus?"

'Um... More than S, I guess SSS?'

He's that strong. So, even the strong Gerald is impossible to kill him, right? Because he has more S than Gerald's.

Gerald and Amenus enter with several other heroes. I follow them past the gate without anyone noticing. As soon as I enter the gate, I'm greeted with a vast scenery of flower fields. The blue flowers sway in the wind as if welcoming us happily.

One of Amenus' underlings steps on the flowers until they crumble and blend into the ground. They are as vicious as their boss.

"So, shall we settle our affairs now?" Amenus looks relaxed. He doesn't care about Gerald's gaze, who is ready to draw his sword towards him.

I can hear Gerald's heavy breathing. Once again, I'm jealous; even though Gerald knows Amenus is stronger than him, he doesn't run. He is fearless and determined. He's not a loser like me.

A pair of bunny ears catch my attention. The ear twitches among the flowers. A head suddenly appears. It looks like a boy with a rabbit head and two long teeth. The other bunny follows him, they appear behind the tall flowers. The bunnies remind me of the creatures I saw on the way to the Kiran Kingdom.

"Who are you? Why are you fighting here?" the boy asks.

Gerald looks around, and I see his expression changing rapidly as he faces those little bunnies.

"Sorry for bothering you."

"This is a free land. If you are fighting over this land, you better go home."

Amenus takes out his sword. He chuckles as he pushes the poor bunny.

"Shut up, you damn brat!"

He almost draws his sword at the bunny, but Gerald immediately restrains him. Their blades clash, creating a sound that terrifies the other bunnies.

The bunny boy is still standing on his two bunny feet. Unlike the others, he is unafraid of swords that can kill him anytime.

"If you kill us here, the King of Kiran will avenge us!"

Kiran? Did he mean the Kiran I know?

The oracle chuckles. 'Yes! Welcome to Greyos, the place where you were reincarnated!'
