The mysterious man

His going quiet made her worry.

“Leo?” she called his name softly.

“Are you alright?”.

He sighed, removing his hands from her body, he pulled away and stood behind her.

“Sorry for hugging you without your permission.”

“I’m alright.”

She glances back at him in confusion, observing his face.

“Are you sure?”.

He nodded with a forced smile.

She adverted her eyes, staring down at her hands. “Good to hear that.”

His eyes narrowed, as the smile on his face faded away as he fisted his hands in anger.

“If only I had power, a power which was greater or equal to them, I would’ve been able to prove their crimes, and give them the punishment that they deserved.”

During the evening, he started walking towards the destination location told by the man who contacted him.

He looked back at the snow-covered Christmas tree from a distance, blurring everything out of his sight.

“But, where am I going to get such power, anyway?”.

“I’m just a jobless orphan married to the granddaughter of a rich businessman, who’s now feeding off from his in-laws. I have no talent, no skills, nothing. I have nothing.”

“Yet,” he stopped in his tracks and looked at the dark sky of the evening.

“I want to help her out in whatever way possible. So that she’ll be back on her feet again, and smile brilliantly just like how she used to before.”

Leonardo stood there leaning onto the railings while staring down at the river passing below the bridge.

Suddenly, the sound of a car horn drew his attention.

He turned around to see a deep blue colored car had arrived where he stood. From the looks of it, it looked quite expensive.

The doors flew open, and a man came out of there.

He wore a black suit and shiny boots. By the looks of it, he seemed to be in his late thirties, with black hair parted at the sides, along with a neatly trimmed mustache and square-framed glasses.

His grey eyes were shining in the dark.

Leonardo pulled his coat tightly to his chest as the man approached him slowly with a smile on his face.

His hands were growing cold, and he didn’t wear any gloves.

He could find his face quite familiar, but he couldn’t recall where he had seen the man. Which is why, his anxiety grew worse, raising his temperature.

He stopped right in front of Leonardo, and held out his hand to him, with a smile.

“Nice to meet you, Leo.” He addressed firmly.

Leo was quite taken aback for the stranger to know his name.

He grew impatient.

“How do you know my name?” he questioned.

The man smiled, as his eyes narrowed.

“I know everything about you. No need to be surprised.”

His eyes widened, making his jaw drop.

“What?”.

“Instead of just talking by the side of the road, would you like to talk inside the car?”.

“I mean….” He looked at the sky snow was falling, and piling up slowly.

“It’s quite cold outside. Inside the car, it’ll be warm.”

Leonardo glanced at the car, as his eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“No need to be wary, I mean no harm.” He added, placing his hands in his pockets.

“You don’t need to feel scared, come in.”

Leonardo thought about it for a second, then nodded.

“Sure then.”

He smiled. “I’m glad to see that you have some trust in me. It makes me happy.”

Leo went ahead with the man in his car.

The man had gotten inside first, then Leo.

They both sat side by side as the doors of the car closed, and silence surrounded them.

Still…it was better than the cold weather outside.

Leo stared out through the window, anxiety filled his head. he kept his head held low and kept thinking about Ella.

“I didn’t tell her that I’m coming to see someone.”

“Will she be worried if I’m late?”.

“I don’t want to make her worry as much as possible.”

He took out something from his pockets. It was a picture.

He handed it over to Leo.

Leo was quite hesitant but he did end up taking it anyway.

The moment his eyes fell on the picture, his jaw dropped and his body became tense.

His eyes were stuck to the picture like a needle on the wall.

He looked up at the guy in confusion.

“W-who…..are you?” he stammered.

“Why do you have this picture?”.

He sat cross-legged inside the car while crossing his arms as he watched Leo struggling by himself.

“Can you recognize, who’s that boy in the picture?” he asked.

“O-of course! It’s me in the picture. The younger me.”

“And what about the guy next to you?”.

Leo glanced at the picture and looked at the guy sitting next to him. He matched their faces and found a similar resemblance between the two.

“Are you in this picture?” Leo asked in an uncertain tone.

He heaved a sigh and closed his eyes for a second. Then turned to Leo.

“It’s not like you will remember it, anyway. It’s been over 15 years since we had last seen each other.”

“I can’t blame you for not remembering anything.”

“Fine, then.”

“Yes, the guy in the picture is me.”

Leo’s eyes widened in shock.

“And the little boy in there is you.”

“Then it makes sense that we both know each other which is why you took the picture of you sitting in my lap, doesn’t it?”.

Leo looked up at him and nodded.

“Before I begin to tell you everything, I should tell you my name. It would be rude for me to talk without introducing myself.”

“Though, I wanted you to recall me on your own. Can’t be helped.”

He uncrossed his legs, and turned to Leo, holding out his hand.

“I’m Kayden Parker. Nice to meet you, Leo.”

The name rang a bell in Leo’s head. He tried his best to find whose name it was but he couldn’t remember it.

Leo shook Kayden’s hand with a head full of questions.

“Kayden…..do I know you?”.

He nods.-

“What I’m going to tell you is something that is going to stay between the two of us.”

“So, listen to it very carefully.”

Leo gulped, as his throat was starting to go dry out of nervousness.

Kayden fixed his posture and began to speak while looking towards the Christmas tree.

“This is a story which takes place 15 years ago.”

“There was a big empire which was ruled by a Kind man. His name is Lionel Kingston.”
