Lester looked confused, his head whipping around so fast it made his vision spin.
“Wh-What are y-you talking about?” He stuttered, sweating bullets. “I didn't do anything wrong!”
Mr Jones face was stoic, not an ounce of pity on his face.
That only made Lester more worried, and he jumped around rummaging through his desk looking for something. Once he got the piece of paper, he held it up triumphantly. “Look, this is it! Duke here was the one who bought the house, not me!”
Lester was so obsessed with himself that he didn't notice the sneer on Jones' face. “You should be thanking me, and Sean here should be kicked out! He doesn't have the money it takes to buy such a property like that.” He laughed suddenly. “I mean, look at him…confidently whipping out his card to pay! Such a joke.”
No one was smiling though.
Jones finally spoke up after allowing Lester to rant. “You must have made a mistake then. Saying that Duke bought the house instead of Sean is…a bit off.”
“What are you saying then?” Lester blew up, not understanding what was happening.
Jones said nothing, waving in a different woman from the one we saw the other time. She had a printout receipt in her hand.
Sean stood there, watching them in amusement. He allowed them to fight it out amongst themselves, a Cheshire grin on his face.
Chloe caught him smiling and tugged on his hand. “Why are you smiling? What's so funny, They are about to fight!”
He only smiled down at her. “You'll find out soon enough.”
“Who bought the villa, Camille?” Jones asked the lady who was staring intently at her receipt.
The moment before she spoke was very tense, everyone practically holding their breath to hear what she'd say.
She raised her head to look at Duke for the longest time, making Amelia grin widely…then she looked over to me.
“It was Sean McAlister, sir.” Her voice was so low, it was hard to make anything out. “It was his card that went through.”
Her declaration dropped the atmosphere down several notches. Disbelief was palpable in the air as well as everyone's faces.
Lester was the first to recover after glancing at Sean, smiling weirdly.
He brushed the back of his neck. “Uh, no offence sweetheart but are you sure about that?”
Camille was unsure, looking to Jones for approval.
Jones nods in the head, chipping in. “Go ahead, Camille.”
She read the paper again, more slowly than before while we waited with bated breath.
She shook her head sadly. “I'm sorry but it's still the same thing. I didn't make a mistake.”
Her word wasn't enough for some people like Amelia who pushed past Lester, storming over to grab that paper from Camille's hand.
“Give me that!” She growled.
Amelia was in disbelief, believing this was to be some sort of embarrassing moment that Sean wanted.
Reading through the receipt, her gaze snagged on Sean's name and the name of his bank which was also equally familiar.
Amelia gasped in shock, losing her grip on the receipt.
No, no, no. This can't be possible!
She thought Sean was broke, he certainly acted like it when he refused to pay her on the day of the wedding!
So, how did he get the money or has he always had it?
Was this some test?
Amidst the jumbled-up thoughts and the mini fight that broke out between Sean, Lester, and Jones, Amelia caught someone hurrying out the door.
She squints, looking close.
“Duke?” She calls out, clamping her hand on his arm. “Where are you going?”
He jerked his hand out of her hold, his eyes shifty. “None of your business!”
“It is my business when you make me look like a fool in front of everyone!” She spat out. “You're nothing but a liar and a cheat!”
That was the wrong thing to say.
Duke flared up, his eyes going dark. His hand reared back, and the next thing Amelia knew there was a throbbing pain in her cheek while Duke stood over her like a monster.
She cried out, touching her hurt cheek with a trembling palm. “What did you do?!”
“What did I do?” Duke looked incredulous.
“How about we talk about what you did? Don't get all angry and bent out of shape when this never would have happened if you weren't such a fake and talked so highly of yourself.”
“Duke, you can't-”
He didn't let her finish, grabbing her arm tightly and hauling her out of there like a sack of potatoes.
His steps were fast and brisk, giving her no choice but to follow or risk breaking her neck.
The worst part? It wasn't like she could have called for help.
While that was ongoing, Jones, Lester and Sean here engaged in a heated conversation.
“I made a mistake sir, and I apologize.” Lester was almost begging, kneeling.
Jones turned his head to Sean as if for guidance but he shook his head, allowing Jones to make the tough decisions.
Lester seemed to catch up who was in power here and he turned to face me, laying his hands facedown begging for appeal. “It won't happen again.”
Sean stared at Lester for the longest minute, thinking over his options.
Remembering how Lester humiliated him was enough to bite but this …
Oh my, how the mighty have fallen.
“I guess that's what you get for believing everything you see without confirmation,” Sean says, reaching back for Chloe's hand.
Her small hand slipped into mine, making contact and calming me down.
Jones seized my other available hand, trapping it between his.
“I have you to thank for this massive…Um, stuff that you did!” Jones shook his hand vigorously, beaming wide. “It's amazing, and I'm so honoured that you chose us to lead it!”
“You're welcome.” Sean grinned.
“The house won't only be an amazing addition
to your collection but there are some other …features of the villa that you would understand.”
Chloe waited for the men to leave first, and just as Sean was about to walk out the door, she stopped him with a hand on his arm. “Hey, hold on.”Sean turned back with curiosity, waiting. “What is it?”Chloe couldn't be sure if there were people listening in, and she didn't want anyone to over their conversation.Pulling him away from the door, she stepped in front of him staring him down.“Look, I'm just in shock as anyone else, okay?” She blew out a breath. “How did you do it? Able to afford that kind of house? I thought you said you didn't have that kind of money.”Sean was caught between the rock and a hard place. He stared back at Chloe, the truth sitting in the tip of his tongue but something held him back from telling her.He wasn't sure if he could trust her yet, despite how innocent looking she seemed.Telling her about his sudden inheritance would only warrant more questions and for her to poke harder…so it was best he didn't.“Promise you won't say anything to anyone?”“Who
Ray pointed at him, ordering the guards. “Arrest him!”Sean just stood there in bemusement, wondering who they were trying to order. “What are you waiting for?”The guards had their orders and much to Ray's surprise instead of hauling Sean away, they matched towards Ray and Amelia.“Sir, Ma'am. You need to come with me.” The guard in front took the lead, his hand resting on his baton.Ray looked around in bewilderment, moving back a bit. “This is some sick joke, right?”The guard's face remained blank but he flexed his hands, the threat clear. “Sir, unfortunately you're trespassing and you need to leave or you will be taken out.”Amelia gasped, placing a hand on her chest as she hid behind her brother. “You can't mean that! Are you threatening us?”“I wouldn't want to be crude but this house belongs to Mr Sean, and it's obvious that he doesn't want you here.”“I don't bloody care what that church rat says!” Ray blows hot. “This is ours!”Sir, I'm trying to be respectful and not apply
Another day, another struggle.Sean rolled around on his bed, sighing in contentment.Gosh, this bed was the softest one he'd lain in,in ages. It was so soft that it tempted him to not head over to work but he was already running late. Before chose to do this, he thought long and hard about it, weighing the pros and cons. Now that he had all this money, he didn't want to remain stuck spending the rest of his life doing a job that he didn't like.Out of courtesy, he decided that turning in his resignation letter would be the best course of action, thereby making it his lady day of work.He showered quickly, stepping out of the bathroom to dress and drive down to work. For some reason, Sean had an uneasy feeling, his gut riding him hard.Something felt off, but he shrugged it off climbing down from the car.Chalking it up to the horrible events of the past days, Sean walked into the office building hoping the day went by fast.Already, there was a pile of work on his desk.Settling down
When Sean stepped out from the break room, he was surprised to see several of his colleagues standing behind that door. Apparently, it seemed they'd been listening to the conversation he had.Ethan stood at the helm, his eyes appearing hungry.Bending to pick up the bag he discarded, Sean hoisted it unto his shoulder. He needed to head home, think of his next move. The crazy thing was, just as he took a step forward the crowd seemed to close in on him crowding him in.He raised his hands in surrender, appealing to them. “What's going on guys? Let me pass.”“Why should we?” Kyle, a fellow officer down at Finance asked. “We heard what Jaden said, how you stole all that money.”“You hearing things doesn't make them right.” Sean defended.“So what does?” Julia, another colleague from the second floor piped up. “Stealing from your own company to fatten your coffers?”“Or maybe he needs it to buy more houses?” Ethan sneered. “Is that why you're here? Looking for more cash to steal?”The min
Unable to take the embarrassment of Rebecca kneeling before him, he tried to reach for her shoulder, pulling her up but she didn't budge, placing her forehead firmly on the ground.“Rebecca, you need to stop this!” He hissed under his breath.Ethan snorted. “Yeah, Rebecca, it's not good for you.”Ethan attempted to touch her shoulder but she whipped around so fast, to grab his hand in a painful grip that Ethan's face twisted into one of anguish. She cast a glance around the room, acting so superior contrary to what he know of her usually calm demeanor. “You all should be the ones kneeling! Don't you know who he is now?”Confused faces filled the room with the exception of Ethan's.Jaden came forward to speak. “What are you talking about Rose, please let that poor man go.” He nods towards Ethan who emits a sorrowful whimper. She turned her nose up in a disdainful sniff, pushing Ethan away from her. To answer Jaden's question, she got up folding her hands across her chest. “I meant hi
Fuck, that just embodies every thing he believed. If that is indeed true, then there as no way he would sit back and allow one person to stain his image as well as wreck down his company, if what Rebecca is saying is to be believed.“Do you have any idea how long we have until that happens?” He asked Rebecca, who was studying the contents of the file so seriously.“Give or take six months.” She shook her head, dropping the paper with a sigh. “This is a big deal. If the perpetrator was siphoning money out in small increments, it probably won't have been noticed for years but look at this…” she turns the file so he could see it. The margin on each gap was significantly bigger than the last, if not three time bigger. “He or she is taking too much at various intervals. Keep this up and there'll be nothing left from company's fund.”“Then we have to stop it.” Sean decided. “There's no way I'm going to allow that to happen, not under my watch.”“Why are you so concerned? Turn this over to t
Three weeks later…..Fear is truly a powerful motivator.Less than three days after he ordered his staff to comply with his new rules, they fell into place like ants marching up a hill.Of course, Sean caught terrible whispers about him from time to time, but that never changed the fact that he was now the CEO.His idea, on the other hand, proved to be a genius. As each department turned in its statement of yearly allocation of its share of the budget and the revised one, things started to fall into place. The gaps were easier to spot, making his way more easier to find out who was padding up the budget, siphoning huge amounts of money.Next up, is phase two of his plan.Reaching out to Rebecca, Sean called for another meeting. This time, he took his words back revising his statement. In these exact words, he told them…“I am so happy with everyone's compliance with my previous orders but now I think it's time to give another.” He glanced around, meeting every person's eyes. “Your yea
Hadley was wise enough not to poke the sleeping bear farther than he could handle, and he retreated glancing down in submission.“Why did you do it?” Sean asked, curious as to what would drive him so far to siphon such huge amounts.“I don't have to answer you.” Hadley spat, defiance in his eyes.Sean put back a smile. “You think so?”He nods, dumbly following what Sean says. “Yes. Even if it is true that you're the Lambert heir and owner of the company, I think you don't deserve it.”Each word was aimed to hit him at the lowest point. Sean's icy facade threatened to crack but he stomped down on his feelings.“Whoever entrusted something so priceless into your hands must be a fool!” Hadley was still talking, driving a wedge between Sean's beliefs.“That's enough!” Sean yelled, his hand raised to punch Hadley.Using every ounce of willpower he had, Sean held back from punching him, his hands hovering a couple of inches above Hadley's face.Nobody moved, enraptured by the scene unfoldin
