Chapter 7

Chloe waited for the men to leave first, and just as Sean was about to walk out the door, she stopped him with a hand on his arm. “Hey, hold on.”

Sean turned back with curiosity, waiting. “What is it?”

Chloe couldn't be sure if there were people listening in, and she didn't want anyone to over their conversation.

Pulling him away from the door, she stepped in front of him staring him down.

“Look, I'm just in shock as anyone else, okay?” She blew out a breath. “How did you do it? Able to afford that kind of house? I thought you said you didn't have that kind of money.”

Sean was caught between the rock and a hard place. He stared back at Chloe, the truth sitting in the tip of his tongue but something held him back from telling her.

He wasn't sure if he could trust her yet, despite how innocent looking she seemed.

Telling her about his sudden inheritance would only warrant more questions and for her to poke harder…so it was best he didn't.

“Promise you won't say anything to anyone?”

“Who am I going to tell?” She laughed dryly. “In case you haven't noticed, Amelia hates my guts.”

Sean sighed, acting like the truth was a burden he couldn't carry. “It wasn't actually my card.”

Her mouth fell open. “What do you mean?”

He scratched the back of his neck, but nervous. “It's my boss card, and in truth, the money wasn't mine. He sent me to buy the house for him.”

Sean watched her carefully to gauge her reaction, and to his surprise she just sighed.

“Oh, thank God. I almost had a heart attack.” She giggled. “Anyways, thank you for saving me from that asshole, Lester.”

“Is he bothering you?”

She snuck a quick glance at him. “You have no idea. Before you came in, he was about to proposition me threatening to fire me if I didn't sleep with him.”

His hands tightened by his sides, and Sean looked at Lester with anger in his eyes wishing he could cave Lester's face in with his fists. “How dare he?”

She laid a hand on his, trying to placate him. “Don't worry about it, what's more important is the fact that you camecij before anything bad happened.” She smiled up at him, making him wonder where she had been his entire life. “It's more of a relief that you didn't use all your money to impress Amelia. You should use the one you have to pay off the compensation and try to pick your life up again. I can help, if you want…”

“You'd want to help me?” He was taken aback by her kind nature.

She shrugged. “Why not? You helped me when I needed it, it only makes sense to do the same for you.”

“Thank you but I've already got that covered.” He tells her. “I have some of the money she needs, managed to do with with my boss's help. I'll pay her but trust me, she won't get it that easily.” His eyes hardened.

There's no way he would easily give in to her demands, not without making her sweat for it.

His phone beeped with a message, and he took a step back. “I've got to go now but I'll keep in touch, I promise.”

He turned on his heel, not waiting for Chloe to respond and he walked out of the building.

The message he received was from his mom's secretary informing him about his new house and it's location.

Instead of driving back to his former place, he changed direction inputting the GPS coordinates to his new place.

Today was full of surprises, each one tumbling after the other because as he rolled into the driveway, the last people he expected to see were sitting on his front porch.

Sean took his sweet time to step down from his car, gearing up mentally for more crazy shits.

Amelia had her brother with her, Ray.

Sean had never liked him before ways thinking he was a meathead, more brawn than brains.

“What are you doing here?” He asked. “You do know that this could be termed trespassing on private property.”

“Not when it is ours.” Ray stepped up.

“Yours?” He arched his eyebrows. “Correct ne if I'm wrong but last time I checked, it wasn't your name on the land documents.”

“That doesn't matter.” Amelia spoke up for the first time since he arrived. “It should be ours as I deserve it as compensation!”

Sean was speechless for a couple of minutes. Just when he thought that Amelia couldn't surprise him any more with her insane demands, she manages to conjure one that would top her previous ones.

He bursts into laughter. “You have got to be kidding!” He laughed so hard that he doubled over, wiping tears from his eyes.

When he was done, he looked at them oy to see their stoic expression.

Oh, they weren't joking…

“That is the craziest shit I've heard from, and trust me, I've heard some fucked up things.” He scoffed. “You need to leave. I've spent too much money trying to pay for this place, I don't have any to give to you right now.”

Ray walked up, blocking his path. “Well that's too bad.”

“Leave now, while I'm still being nice.” Sean growled, staring him down.

“You might have deceived everyone by paying for the house, but don't forget that Amelia and I…we know the real you, and all he is a fake!” Ray laid his hands on Sean, pushing him a couple of steps back.

Rage was riding Sean hard, his hands turning into fists but luckily, the patter of feets reached his ears and the next thing he knew, roughly gaf a dozen guards tuned the corner.

Ray looked smug, his chest swelling up. “See? The guards are already here to kick you out,” He leaned in, his rancid breath hitting Sean in the face. “You better leave.”
