Chapter 4

”I’ve only been able to keep him stable for now but he’s still unconscious, and his stability won’t last very long,” Doctor Ben stated.

Despite the tension, he had managed to make the old man stable, though his breathing was shallow and irregular.

Collin wiped the sweat from his aching forehead. “Please doctor,” he implored with a trembling voice.

“Whatever it takes to save him, do it. Anything at all, just save him. We can’t lose him.”

With a deep, reluctant sigh, the doctor spoke up. “There’s one more option,” he murmured, a hint of uncertainty in his voice.

“It’s the only option left. It might be able to temporarily keep him alive, but it would put him in a permanent coma with uncertain chances of waking up.”

Collins‘ brows shot upward in fear, his eyes widening as the words sank in. “A coma… with no guarantee?” He swallowed hard, his eyes darting around as he wrestled with the decision.

He hesitated as the risk was high, but the thought of losing his father without trying everything possible would be unbearable.

With a shaky breath, he looked back at the doctor and said, “Do it. We don’t have any other choice so do it.”

“Uh!” Janae whispered, shaking her head in disapproval. She was in total disagreement with Dr Ben’s option.

What if her grandfather never woke up again? She couldn’t bear even the thought of it.

At this point, she knew she had to reach Richard immediately.

With her trembling hands, she searched her bag for the contact card Richard gave her earlier and decided to ask him for help.

Meanwhile, Richard had already left the Morrigan villa and was heading to another villa neighborhood to visit Sir Wilson.

Sir Wilson was his late father’s closest friend, and he hadn’t seen him since he left the city three years ago, so he wanted to stop by.

He arrived at the villa and was walking towards the entrance when his phone suddenly rang.

His brows furrowed slightly as the screen flashed an unknown number, but without hesitation, he answered.

“Good day Doctor. It’s me.. erm.. the lady you met earlier near the clinic,” a voice immediately cut through the line.

Richard already knew it was Janae.

“My grandfather is currently unconscious,” she continued without pause, “everything you said would happen has happened already. I know I should have believed you then, but please can you help us now?”

The rapid pace at which she spoke made her urgency and desperation evident.

“I will help you,” Richard replied out of duty to fulfill his master’s promise associated with the card. “I’m currently at Grey villa in Ashton…”

“Alright, I’ll arrange for someone to pick you up immediately,” she said, before hanging up and quickly setting things into motion.

Hanging up the phone, Richard was about to reach the front door of the villa and raised his fist to knock when he suddenly heard someone call his name.

“Richard!!”

The voice was sharp but familiar.

He turned to see Lydia, Sir Wilson’s daughter.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, her upper lip curling upward in contempt.

“Hello Lydia. I’ve come to visit your father, it’s been a while…”

Lydia’s scornful laughter interrupted Richard. “Have you finally gone broke after working as a village doctor?”

She had heard that Richard had been working as a doctor in the village clinic since leaving the city. So she assumed he was here to beg for money.

“There’s no need to sugarcoat why you’re here, Richard. Spill it… you’re here to beg for money. You don’t have to be ashamed.”

Knowing Lydia’s materialistic nature, Richard decided to ignore her and just go in, greet Sir Wilson and leave.

But as he attempted to knock, she rushed towards him.

“If you try it, I’ll call the security to throw you out this minute!”

Richard’s hand froze mid-air, and she continued to mock him with utter disregard.

Just in time, Sir Wilson and his wife opened the door. They had heard the quarrel from inside.

“Oh! Richard!” Sir Wilson exclaimed and immediately hugged Richard tightly.

Richard’s excitement grew as he hugged him back even tighter.

“How have you been!” he asked, his eyes lighting up with a smile as he pulled away.

“The company has been doing great, thanks to you, Uncle Wilson,” Richard chimed in as Sir Wilson led him in the house.

After Richard’s parents passed away, he inherited their company. However, unwilling to run it himself, he entrusted it to Sir Wilson because of the strong bond the latter shared with his late father, and left.

Lydia took a seat, her heart sinking as she watched her father’s warm welcome. But soon enough, her thoughts began to race.

“Or is he here to reclaim the company?” she wondered, her stomach knotting with unease.

Sir Wilson turned to her and said, “Lydia, you know Richard is family, so you should behave yourself next time.”

“Besides, me and my late friend, Demar, already agreed that you and Richard would get married..”

“C’mon dear, it was just a verbal promise,” Lady Wilson quickly chimed in, “It doesn’t mean a thing. How could Lydia marry someone like him?”

Even if she tried to sound as polite as possible, the fact that she shared her daughter’s low opinion of Richard was obvious.

To her, Richard was merely an ordinary poor boy unworthy of her beautiful daughter.

Sir Wilson’s face immediately hardened at their dismissive attitudes, “Have you both forgotten that the wealth you now enjoy came from Demar’s company?..“

“…and if Richard wishes to take it back, I’ll gladly hand it back. What is wrong with you two??” he scolded.

Lady Wilson and Lydia’s faces flushed red as they exchanged a quick, concerned glance.

Richard smiled gently, “I have no interest in reclaiming the company, Uncle Wilson” he said calmly, “I only stopped by to visit you.”

After hearing Richard’s words, Lydia and her mother felt relieved; even if they had no right to.

Sir Wilson nodded and continued, with a more serious tone, “Then perhaps it’s time we start planning the marriage between you two, it’s long overdue.”

“No, dad!”

“No, dear!”

Both ladies chorused their objections.

Richard, unbothered by their attitude, also didn’t hesitate to decline. “Oh, no, Uncle Wilson. There won’t be any need for that,” he said with a dry laugh.

But sir Wilson didn’t give up either. “I know you’re both only acting this way because you’ve been away from each other for a long time,” he said and laughed.

“You know what, I’ll give you six months to get to know each other then we can make a final decision on the marriage,” he concluded with a smile.

“Dad…” Lydia was about to object again when a knock at the door stopped her.

“I’ll get the door,” she offered.

Opening the door, Lydia sighted a Rolls Royce parked outside.

Her jaw immediately dropped– it was the latest model! Though she came from a wealthy home, she’d only ever seen this car in magazines.

Seeing its sleek appearance in person left her completely breathless.

“Good day ma’am,” the well dressed man in front of her greeted.

She brushed her hand through her hair and tilted her head just enough to meet him with a flirtatious glint. “Hi..”

A wealthy suitor must be here for her, she thought.

“Is Mr Richard here? We’re here to pick him up.”

“Uh! You’re here to pick up Richard??”
