Chapter 3

“Look, I had no idea Sir Morrigan had fallen into a coma. In fact I’d like to see for myself.”

Delilah frowned, “Are you trying to insinuate that I’m lying or something? You know what, follow me,” she ordered and led him to a room.

She decided that she wouldn’t argue with him. She would just take him to see for himself then maybe he would finally give up on the engagement.

Richard’s eyes widened slightly at the sickly old man lying unconscious on the bed. He increased his pace to take a look and it was really Sir Morrigan.

All the color from the old man’s face had drained. Even his lips were chapped and purple. Every breath he took seemed to drag on forever and he looked as if he were barely hanging on, like a light slowly dimming.

Richard lifted his hand gently and took a look at his palm, “Oh no! He has been afflicted with Viperis.”

“What the hell is Viperis?” Delilah asked, her face twisting into a scowl.

Richard’s expression grew grim as he shook his head,

“Sir Morrigan is suffering from a rare and potent poison, Viperis. And it’s going to take several kinds of rare herbs to create an antidote.”

“This poison attacks the body slowly, suffocating the victim from the inside. The symptoms start subtly, but as it progresses, it begins to drain the life out of them. And right now,” he paused and looked at the old man, “your grandfather is barely holding on.”

Delilah scoffed, clearly unimpressed. For a moment, she almost believed him, but then she thought she was going crazy.

“Don’t think you can fool me with this act of yours. Not you pretending to be some miracle doctor,” she sneered, waving him off dismissively.

“At least you have seen for yourself that my grandfather will not be able to cancel the engagement himself, right? You may leave now.”

“Time is running out…” Richard started.

“I said leave!”

Richard didn’t bother saying anything more and resolved to leave.

“I will find the herbs needed to cure your grandfather myself,” he simply said before turning on his heel and leaving without another word.

“It’s really none of your business, why are you trying so hard to find a reason to cling to me? I never want to see you again!” she yelled at his retreating figure.

Richard on the other hand ignored and quietly left the villa.

He only needed to heal Sir Morrigan for the sake of honoring his master’s strict instructions, so that the former could cancel the engagement himself.

But Delilah had a different perspective on the matter.

“God I hate this man. Can't he just accept a simple rejection? So infuriating!”

Just then, Delilah’s phone rang out. It was Doctor Ben. ”Hello doc…”

“Ms Delilah, after extensive research on your grandfather’s illness, I realized that he has been afflicted with a rare poison called Viperis.”

“Viperis??” she asked, her eyes widening in surprise.

Wasn't this the very poison Richard mentioned now after just one glance at her grandfather? She thought in disbelief.

Delilah was completely stunned.

In mere seconds, she was trying to wrap her head around how Richard could detect the poison from a glance, while one of the nation’s top ten doctors needed to do extensive research to confirm it.

Or could it be that Richard truly possessed remarkable medical skills? She began to give it a thought.

Almost immediately, she snapped out of it. ‘I must be going crazy. Remarkable medical skills from a village doctor? That’s impossible. It must have been a lucky guess,’ she concluded in her mind.

She returned her focus to Dr Ben who had been explaining further on the toxin.

“Yes doc…”

As she listened to him, she felt relieved. Now that doc knew what was wrong with her grandfather, he could finally begin to treat him.

“When will you be coming in to begin the treatment, doc?”

“Ms Delilah, I’m afraid that won’t be happening. The poison is too potent, and Sir Morrigan has been afflicted for too long. There’s almost nothing I can do about his case.”

“What do you mean doc?” Delilah’s heart began to pound in her chest.

“By now, the poison would have entered his bloodstream and flown to every part of his body including his brain. It’s a lost cause at this point.”

“No… no,” Delilah began to stutter, “Doc, there must be something you can do. Please!”

“I’m sorry, Ms Delilah,” he said, his voice heavy with sadness.

Delilah rubbed her throbbing forehead.

“Actually, there’s a person who might be able to help. He’s a mysterious doctor with extraordinary skills…”

“Where can I find him?” she desperately asked.

“I don’t know as he is nearly impossible to find and he rarely takes on patients. But he had these ten exclusive cards which anyone in possession could seek his help.”

“Cards…” she whispered to herself. “Thank you doc. I’m going to find him.”

She hung up immediately, determined to find this elusive healer even if it meant using every possible resource.

Meanwhile, back at Janae’s home, Doctor Ben finally arrived.

“Thank you for coming doc!” Janae said gratefully as she led them to her grandfather.

“It’s not a big deal darling,” Cane, a young man who had come with the doctor, replied proudly. He had been pursuing Janae for a long time, but she had never agreed.

He continued, “Though it was not easy for me to bring in Dr Ben, but my father had the right connections,” he boasted, hoping to impress her.

Janae flashed him a flat smile and said, “Thank you, Cane.”

The doctor began to examine the old man as soon as they entered the room.

After a while, he sighed deeply.

“I’m afraid his condition is already too severe. He has been left untreated for too long, and at this stage, recovery is unlikely.”

Janae and Daniel’s eyes, drained of color, met each other in disbelief.

“You can’t be serious, doc!” she couldn’t believe that even Dr Ben couldn’t save her grandfather. It was… absurd.

She hurried to his side and took his hand, “please you have to help us. Please,” she began to plead.

But, all of a sudden, the old man’s eyes bulged as he began to cough uncontrollably that he began to choke.

“Dad!” Collin Vester, Janae’s dad, ran to his side.

Immediately he began to gasp for air.

“Doctor, do something!!”

The doctor immediately began to apply pressure on his chest but it wasn’t helping at all.

“His lips and fingers are turning blue,” Janae cried out, panicking seriously. “Dr Ben, please do something!”

The doctor’s hands began to tremble. “His fever is seriously spiking.” He reached for his instruments but he was too confused to know what to pick.

Next minute, the old man became quiet and still.

Janae’s teary eyes darted around the old man, “Why isn’t he moving?” she said with a low voice. “Why isn’t he moving?!” she screamed.

Suddenly, her widened eyes shot at Daniel in realization, “The apprentice.. the apprentice from earlier… he was right.”
