ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN – HUMILIATION
Luke returned to a very silent house at exactly nine thirty the next morning.

He didn’t know why, but the moment he walked through his front door, he knew something was wrong. Something was horribly wrong.

The first person he ran into was Mrs. Medley, his housekeeper. The moment she saw him, she lowered her gaze and bowed slightly.

Odd, Luke thought.

“Good morning, sir.”

“Good morning, Mrs. Medley.”

Luke couldn’t help but notice that instead of leaving, as was expected, the woman hovered in the background. She also looked really nervous.

No longer able to stand her discomfiting behaviour, he turned and asked her.

“Is something wrong, Mrs Medley? Is there something you’d like to talk about?”

She stepped back, her eyes widening in surprise and guilt.

“No. Of course not. Everything is absolutely fine. Lord George is waiting for you in the lounge.”

Luke wanted to ask her why his grandfather was waiting for him but she’d already disappeared down the hall.
