4: MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

Andrew was lying in his room looking at the ceiling, projecting the next day.

(All I could think about is Alice. I want to know what she is doing at the moment. But I have no courage to text her at night. Tomorrow I have to wake up early to go to work. And I don't want to bother her too. She most likely is at a family dinner, or at a fancy restaurant with friends chatting.)

Andrew's mother had kept part of the money he had managed to make that day. It was normal, but at least now he had a little money for himself.

At least he was able to eat something nice now and start getting ready to leave his mother's house. His mother even was complaining about the food he was eating at her home.

"You are not worth the food you eat you brat."

His mother never gave Andrew enough freedom to have friends outside the house. And Andrew wasn't used to trusting people. And that's why he hardly talked to people. And when he talked to a person, they usually treated him badly. That's why he liked Alice. Someone who looked up to him with good eyes. At times she seemed distant and didn't want to know about him, but still, Andrew had a deep love for her.

After some time, when Andrew was ready to leave his house and start sleeping in the pizzeria. On a warm autumn day, under an apple tree on one of the richest streets in Sterling City. A place where Andrew often went with Alice because there were friends of hers who always held commemorative events.

"Are we going to get married?" Alice had bright eyes as she rubbed red gloss on her lips, taking her hand out of her pocket and showing her porcelain nails in that pink hue like a baby's skin.

"Just like that? Why did you feel like it?" Andrew looked a little unsure about that decision.

"Yes. Since you didn't take the initiative, I did it for you. If not, we'll never get out of this shitty cycle we're in." Andrew certainly wanted to marry Alice, but he didn't know if it would be beneficial for him.

After a sigh, Alice licked Andrew's cheek.

"Are we getting married? Say yes. Come on. It'll be fun."

Andrew didn't even want to think about it anymore. He was happy beside Alice and would accept that marriage proposal. His life was taking a turn he hadn't anticipated.

"Yes ma'am, your request is my command."

Alice put the ring on his finger and squealed, enjoying the moment. She was filming Andrew and his new ring. She would send it to her friends' chat or share it on her social networks.

When they arrived at the event, none of Alice's usual friends seemed to know that she had proposed to him. But he also didn't want to be the first to tell. That rabble was laughing at him as usual.

"Always sniffing Alice's ass, mutt?”

"Don't you know where you belong? You shouldn't be here. You're better off on the other side. These streets don't know the sound of gunfire." four of them who had their glasses in their hands surrounding Andrew were laughing at him.

"Hi, Andrew!" Alice's friends looked at him with such fake smiles that Andrew didn't realize how they shook his hand and sometimes even gave him a kiss to say hello.

"Stay with us," was always the same thing, but Andrew rejected it every time because he didn't want to get too involved with them.

Weeks later when Andrew was getting ready for his wedding. He left his parents' house. He had started to live in the pizzeria, but he still hadn't talked to his boss about it.

The structure of the pizzeria shook as those loud footsteps followed down the stairs.

"You've been acting strange lately. I hope you're not up to something." Viviani was constantly pointing his finger in Andrew's face, and this time he did the same.

"I'm clean. I'm innocent," Andrew held his bare hands up.

"You've been out really late. I hope those extra hours work out. After all, this is yours too. Hahahaha."

The footsteps were moving away from the Pizzeria, and they could still be heard outside many meters away.

He couldn't reveal that he was there. He had to find a place to stay as soon as possible.

His wedding party arrived faster than he thought. Winter had frozen the streets, and this was the best time of the season to marry according to the news.

The hall was full of Alice's family and friends. There was no one that Andrew had invited. The people in her life were few and far between, and even the guests Alice had brought were no better than the ones Andrew hadn't invited.

"Always chic. Hanging out with Alice has made you a little brighter," said one of Alice's friends as Andrew walked through the hall on his way to the bathroom.

"If it weren't for her, you'd probably take public transport from here to home." spoke one of Alice's cousins who hated the fact that Alice was the heir to the family company.

"Aren't you a beggar or something like that?"

"Waiter, can I have another glass of champagne?" One of Alice's aunts was addressing Andrew in the middle of the wedding.

"Where do you live, mongrel?" Alice's male best friend spoke, who was always with her. He was the one who laughed at Andrew the most, and on that particular day, he was always making fun of Andrew.

There were so many comments around Andrew that he was starting to feel dizzy. He didn't understand why all of Alice's friends and family wanted to humiliate him.

Alice was receiving people who arrived at the wedding and she was smiling with all the guests as if she were at a party.

Moments later, the time had come. The priest called us to that small chantry made of real roses. We were both barefoot over the petals. A chantry made of petals with golden glitter.

"Andrew! Do you take this woman, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better and for worse, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, ’till death do you part?"

"Of course, Sir."

"Alice! Do you take this man, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better and for worse, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, ’till death do you part?"

There was a heavy silence in the hall. Tension hung in the air, and some sweated as they waited for the answer.

Alice sighed. And her voice sounded deaf to Andrew.

"I don't, priest." after looking deep into Andrew's eyes.
