5: WHEN EVERYTHING GETS WORSE

The guests fell in shock at that answer.

"I don't want to marry Andrew, priest."

The bride came out of that chantry full of roses. She put on the sandals that she had left outside the chantry.

"My good people. This nonsense ends here. The wedding is over and I'm leaving." Alice pretended to drop an invisible microphone. And while everyone watched, Alice took her best friend's hand and left the hall where she was supposed to marry Andrew.

"She left the groom at the altar alone."

"He looks like a beggar. I still want to understand what he does on that altar."

"Alice made the right choice. We're just wasting time here." One of the uncles was speaking in the midst of the people who were beginning to empty the wedding hall.

"I'm leaving. This marriage has been pretty good so far."

"Michael, bring us lots of beers. Today I won't stop drinking until tomorrow." A cousin of Alice's was speaking, as if he had already forgotten why he was there.

Andrew watched as the hall emptied as the priest packed his things and also prepared to leave.

Andrew didn't know what had just happened. He still hadn't been able to gain an idea of everything that had happened and he was on top of that stage of flowers, barefoot looking at the half-empty hall.

"May God stand with you my son," The priest took him by the shoulder and left the place with a great feeling of regret. There had only been the staff of the organization. The waiters and the maids. Andrew left there defeated, without tears in his eyes because the shock was huge. It even seemed that Alice knew everything beforehand. It was she who had prepared that wedding scenario. Andrew's opinions were never valid and she had chosen everything, even his wedding tuxedo. Andrew was wearing pointed shoes that looked more like flip-flops because his heel was exposed. Dressed completely in white, he walked the streets of Sterling City. He needed to get to the pizzeria to take off those clothes. He didn't know what he was going to do with her, maybe offer. He was hungry but had no appetite, and walked slowly causing people in the street to deviate from his path, until a group of policemen stopped him and asked him to accompany them.

"Sorry police officers, but why am I obliged to accompany you?" Andrew's arms were already raised in the air, and his body seemed to levitate as the cops carried him into the squad car.

"I don't know if you noticed, but you’re obstructing the passage of people here on the street. So don't ask questions and keep following us," said the policeman who seemed to lead that group of 3 policemen.

When they put him inside the car, one of the policemen took the club and pressed it lightly on Andrew's head "You look like you don't even have money to buy that tuxedo, tell us who you stole that from?"

"I think he was at a wedding, John," the cops in that area all answered by the name "John".

"Weddings are merry John, and he looks crestfallen."

The car door opened on the driver's side and the chief cop was looking in the rearview mirror.

"Tell us your story before you hear from us."

Andrew didn't want to talk, but he realized that even if he wasn't handcuffed, his situation could get worse if he didn't cooperate with the cops.

He explained that after being dumped by his fiancée, he was wandering around the city, and that he hadn't realized that he was obstructing the public road.

"Okay, so you'll just get out of the cell tomorrow," The chief policeman was shooting faster than the pistols they didn't have in their belts.

"Don't worry, we have food. We just don't have the most comfortable place, but the prison cell must be a hotel for homeless guys like you."

"But I already explained that I was distracted and downcast because my marriage had gone wrong."

"Yes, and so that the worst doesn't happen, we'll watch over you until tomorrow. All you have to do is cooperate and that way we can avoid putting handcuffs on you."

Andrew gulped and allowed himself to be led to the nearest police station jail cell.

That cell didn't even have a bed, and on top of that, he had to share it with a strange man who was as well dressed as he was, but unlike that white man, the man carried a striking black in his clothes.

"I know you must not have done anything serious, otherwise I doubt they would put you in the same cell as me," spoke a man about the age of Andrew who was better than him in every way.

He looked very rich, he was handsome and his clothes and accessories were much more expensive than all of Andrew's.

Andrew realized now that nothing was impossible, because even someone who seemed to be someone and have everything shared a prison cell with him.

As much as the police asked, there was no one Andrew wanted to warn about that situation. He was entitled to a free call, but then who was he going to talk to? Who cared about him, if not even the fiancée he had recently agreed to marry him?

At least he could eat a cold meal without having to spend what little money he had.

Said and done, the police released him after 24 hours. But before he left, his cellmate had given him a card with a readable telephone number.

"ASK ME A WISH!"

"What is this for? And why don't you go out?"

"As you can see, I'm not much for talking. My business here is different. I would appreciate it if you would go away and call the number only if you really need something."

"And who would attend to me? You? From inside this cell?"

"If you keep looking for answers inside here, you won't be able to answer the questions you'll find outside. Go on your way and pretend we never talked."

And as if it were magic, Andrew forgot he had talked to that man, put the card in his pocket, and went to the pizzeria, because he finally wanted to get rid of those wedding clothes.

"After all, you're living here. I knew something was wrong when I noticed that you were always going out late. You didn't go out late. You were staying here until the next day." Viviani was standing behind the counter, one of Andrew's laundry bags in his hand.
