"What the fuck!" Callum roared as he looked around the kitchen, expecting to see the guy pop out of nowhere. "What just happened?"
He would've thought it was a bad dream or that he'd gone crazy if it weren't for the ice shards on the floor and the broken glass of the door. Callum took several deep breaths while trying to calm his pounding heart while remaining vigilant.
Suddenly, the sounds of the outside world returned. It must be over. Callum wasn't sure why he thought that, but he was certain it was right. Before he could celebrate, he heard the dreaded sound of footsteps in the hallway. Please, no!
"Quick, Maya, check the kitchen." The old voice Callum heard moments before the attack shouted.
Callum frowned as a young Nepali woman with straight black hair appeared. It took a moment for her to scan the damage before noticing Callum off to the side. Her eyes went wide for a moment before a bright smile lit up her face.
"He's here! And he's alive!" Maya called over her shoulder.
"Hmm," Maya's grandfather sighed in relief as he joined them in the kitchen. "Well, Cal, it's nice to finally meet you."
"Who the hell are you?" Callum's patience was thin after what had happened. Besides, only people who were close to him called him Cal. "And what just happened?"
"Hmm, you can call me Master Gurung. Others know me as The Hermit," he frowned when he noticed Callum seemed more confused by his introduction. "Did Felix never mention me?"
Callum jolted at the mention of his grandfather's name and the hurt in Master Gurung's voice. Wait, is he the friend mentioned in Grandpa's last message?
"He left a message saying a friend of his would come. I'm sorry, but he's never mentioned your name." Callum avoided meeting the old man's gaze as he felt somewhat guilty.
"I guess he wanted to limit your interaction with the awakened community." Suresh Gurung's eyes were filled with sadness as he stared at Callum. "There's something I need to ask you. Why didn't you wait for me before lifting the first seal on The Magician?"
Callum could hear the accusation and disappointment in Master Gurung's tone. However, he didn't need to feel guilty about it. Wait.
"How do you know?"
"The world's mana reacted to it. When you awakened, that ring of yours sent an alarm to me. However, when you lifted the seal, it was like announcing to anyone with the necessary skills that The Magician has returned."
"Returned? What about Grandpa?" Callum's tone was thick with confusion.
"Well, let's just say he wasn't active for a long time. Maybe one day I'll tell you more. But now I need you to answer my earlier question."
"Sorry," Callum shrugged. "But Grandpa never said anything about waiting. He seemed in his message that I learned to control mana as soon as possible."
"That idiot!" Master Gurung grumbled in a low voice as he ran a hand through his hair. "It can't be helped. At least you're not an idiot who ignored any warnings. We can't stay here. You should pack a bag. There's only one place we can go to keep you safe."
"Wait. Who was that guy who attacked me, and what did he want? Also, where are we going?"
"The man who attacked you is The Fool, and he probably wanted to seize The Magician's legacy for himself. Nobody knows his real name, and with his skills, it's difficult to track him." Master Gurung sighed. "As for where we're going. It's an awakened organisation based in London with branches all over Europe. The Clocktower."
Callum frowned at the name. It didn't sound magical, no matter how he thought about it.
"What's the point of going there?"
"We need to register you as an awakened, and they can teach you about your powers. Every Major and Minor Arcana family in Europe send their heirs to the London headquarters for their education." Master Gurung grinned. "With The Empress watching over it, it's one of the safest places on Earth."
"I thought you'd be teaching me?"
Callum was honestly surprised as he stared at Master Gurung. He couldn't help but feel somewhat betrayed.
"No," Master Gurung groaned. "Your first two years of education will be systematic with a variety of Professors and methods. Only once you reach the Triangle Stage for your third year can a master take you as an apprentice."
Callum's expression crumbled. It was almost comical how disappointed he looked.
"Don't look like that. I'm sure with The Magician's legacy you'll progress quite fast. I suspect you'll quickly rise to the peak of magic." Master Gurung chuckled. "Now, go pack your things. You won't return here for some time."
Callum sighed with an awkward look on his face. "Well, I guess I'm ready to go. This is all I have."
He gestured to the new clothes he was wearing. I'll need to call Dani later and let her know I'll be gone so she won't worry.
Maya raised an eyebrow as she watched him with disbelief. How can that be all he has? It was safe to assume Maya had become interested in Callum. Sure, he was decent-looking. But it was his status as a newly minted Major Arcana wielder that stirred her emotions.
Since she was the heir to The Hermit, it was no wonder she would be interested in him. Maya would be in the position in the possibly near future. After all, her grandpa was getting on in his years.
It'll be nice to have someone I can talk to about my doubts. Maya sighed as the two men kept talking as if she wasn't there. Although she was at the Triangle Stage herself, there was no place for her in that conversation.
Maybe I should offer to help him with his studies until he joins The Clocktower. It could be a good way to get to know him better.
She barely had any interaction with other people ever since she had awakened. Her grandfather immediately took her as his apprentice back then. Which was why she knew he was lying to Callum.
He could definitely take him as an apprentice right now. What is he playing at?
Callum watched the scenery go by as the train rumbled along the tracks. He was lost in thoughts since Dani had seemed angry when he called her. He'd given her the excuse that he needed to get away from everything and had decided to move to London for a while.Naturally, she tried to talk him out of it. She argued he shouldn't make such big decisions while his emotions were a mess. Dani only gave up when he told her he was already on a train and that he would be staying with a family friend."Hey," Maya grunted to get Callum's attention. "You need to focus. You heard Grandpa, you need to refine your mana and deepen your understanding of magic before we reach The Clocktower.""Sorry," Cal smiled. "You're right. What element do you suggest I start with?""Huh?" Maya raised an eyebrow at the ridiculous question. "How many elements are you attuned with? Two? Three?"Maya's voice rose an octave with each number she said. However, before she could get an answer, Master Gurung sitting next to
"What the" Maya blurted out when she felt the temperature around them dropping. "How? It's not even been an hour yet!"Callum chuckled at her expression which looked like she had eaten something sour. He swore a smirk on his face as he shrugged."It's not that difficult. I'm sure Master Gurung wouldn't have asked me to do something he didn't think I'd be capable of."It was a loaded statement. After all, Callum was certain it was something that should be beyond the level of someone who didn't have the answers. He only said it like that to see what reaction the old man would have. However, Master Gurung didn't even bother opening his eyes as he nodded. Damn. Either Grandpa told him what our legacy is capable of or he already had his suspicions. If it's the first then it's not a big deal. But if it's the second...Callum chewed on the implications of that question for a moment. Then he's testing the limits of The Magician by using me as a test subject. He could only trust his Grandpa'

He had managed to raise his fire-related stats by 3 and his air-related ones by 1. Unfortunately, the train had become busier which brought a halt to his training to prevent anyone from noticing the anomalies caused by it.After arriving in London, they had taken a taxi. Callum had fully expected to be brought to Big Ben considering the organisation was called The Clocktower. However, they stopped outside an old antique shop that nobody glanced at twice."Hey, why are we here?" Callum asked Maya as Master Gurung paid the driver. "I don't know." Maya shrugged. "It's my first time in London outside of airports."Callum grimaced when he realised there
Callum's eyes went wide as they stepped inside the room. He had expected to find a woman behind a desk in a neat office. However, what he stepped into instead was the largest garden he had ever seen!Shrubs, trees, hedges, and flowers he had never seen were dotted around the landscape. Their colours and hues made a perfect harmony that seemed to soothe his soul. Soon, he heard the sound of birds chirping. As the fragrant scents washed over him, Callum spotted cats, dogs, foxes, bees, ants, and many other living creatures going about their business. A short distance away, a stunning woman in her early thirties sat inside an octagon-shaped white gazebo. Her light brown hair was done up in a tress, and her white day dress gave her a certain look of purity. That, combined with the scenery, made her look like a nature goddess descended to earth."My, my," The woman said with a bright smile as she turned to look at her guests. "Who do we have here? The elusive Hermit of all people! I must s
"Wait!" Cal said, but it was too late."Where are we?" Maya looked around the room they had appeared in.Callum cocked an eyebrow as he scanned the large but almost empty room. There was a comfortable-looking four-poster bed in the middle of one wall with a set of drawers and a wardrobe against another. The strangest thing though, was a desk and chair with a black gem-like ball embedded in it.A knock sounded against one of the three thick wooden doors in the room and Maya was quick to open it. On the other side was a young woman with dark circles under her eyes. "Is Callum Shaw here?" The woman asked as she peered into the room. "I'm here to deliver his materials and explain a few things to him.""I'm right here," Cal said as he waved her in. "Maya, give her some room.""Thank you. My name's Emily Fletcher." The woman smiled brightly despite her evident exhaustion. "First, let me say congratulations on joining The Clocktower. You must be quite skilled to pass the entrance exam despit
Callum cursed as he rushed through the hallway. His hair was still wet, and he'd missed breakfast. Thank god for that enchanted thing in the bathroom that cleans clothes. It would have been embarrassing to arrive on the first day with odour issues.Luckily, the bracelet is enchanted to show where your next class is. Cal grinned as he stared at the black metal band on his left wrist. The enchantment was pointing at a door on his right a short distance away. There were a few minutes left until the class started, so Callum paused outside to catch his breath before going inside. Silence descended in the lecture room as he opened the door and stepped inside. His classmates stared at him with confused expressions, and a young man in the middle row looking down at him opened his mouth to say something."Callum!" Emily squealed from the second row, which drew everyone's attention to her.Callum sighed in relief. At least there's one person I know in my first class. His relief was short-lived
"Well, this is a pleasant surprise." Professor Morales said while staring at him. "Our first success within minutes of class starting! I didn't expect you to succeed until you asked for help, and we had a few classes together."She sounded absolutely delighted as the rest of the class stared at him with a mix of awe and envy. Even Emily, near the front, had her mouth hanging open as she looked at him as if he were a monster."Please, tell me, what classification is your new spell?""It's a ward-type spell," Cal replied as he felt his face heating up."You hear that class? Mr Shaw showed wisdom beyond what most fresh young mages do. It's important to have a way to defend yourself before focusing on other methods. Now, if you would, please show us your spell."Cal gulped as he removed his hands from the cube and looked around the class. Oh well, there's nothing I can do about it now. Whirlpool!Cal stood up and moved back as he stretched out his arm. His mana flowed through his body, cr
Callum sighed as he sat back and watched the others for a while. After several minutes, no one else had created a spell. 'What's going on? It's not that hard.'Cal frowned as he noticed the tense expressions of his classmates. He could tell they were concentrating, and nobody seemed to be slacking off. Even Professor Morales wore a look that said it was perfectly normal. 'Did I get lucky?'No matter how he thought about it, that shouldn't be the case. 'There's only one way to find out.' Callum shrugged his shoulders and placed his hands on the cube again. As the interface popped up, Cal already had a spell in mind. Now that he knew how spells were made and that they had a 'memory' of their own, there was something he wanted to make his mana refinement easier. Before long, a green glow lit up the class from its rear. Callum almost wondered if he had become deaf because of the silence. Unanimously, the whole class turned to stare at him again."Ahem," Professor Morales cleared her throa
