"You what?" the angel shrieked.
He sighed. She didn't have to scream. He was surprised too, but she didn't need to scream like a banshee. At this rate, his ears were going to go. It was really tempting for him to just kill her and put them both out of their misery.
"How is that possible? Wouldn't there be a contradiction?" he asked.
[Yes, it causes a paradox. So how do you think the paradox is resolved?]
Luke had to think about it before saying, "If there are two demon kings for the same position at any one time, I would assume that one of them would have to die."
[That's correct. Which of the demon kings do you think will disappear?]
"The fact that you were the demon king I fought means you survived," he said. "How?"
[The demon's system prioritizes their survival of demons; therefore, it will pick the demon king it believes is the better option. While I was just a newborn, the previous demon king had already used his ability to turn back time and had lost to me already.]
"So, it decided to get rid of the old demon king," he finished.
"That's why the demon king suddenly died," demanded Judith. They focused their attention on her. "We couldn't figure out where he had disappeared to during the battle. There were no traces of him no matter how hard we looked. Then out of the blue, a new demon king had taken his place without us knowing. We thought that a rival demon had killed the weakened demon. To think it was the previous hero."
[Well, it was a risky choice to make, but I didn't have a choice. Unlike with you, the previous demon king appeared before me right after his death. A hit was put on my head immediately. I didn't even have time to recover from my injuries before I was running for my life. In a desperate attempt to survive, I wished to go back before I killed the previous demon king, hoping I could stop being the demon king. You can see the results yourself.]
That had definitely been quite a risk for him to take, but if put in the same situation, Luke wasn't sure if he would have made a different choice. If everyone suddenly came after him without giving him time to breathe, he might have not had a choice except to make the same decision.
There was one good thing about this. It meant he could go back as far as he wanted. He could jump back to the beginning and raise his own forces before the angels realized what happened.
[I don't see any problems with your decision. Just remember one thing. If you do go back that far, there will be massive changes. A lot of your knowledge would probably become useless.]
"You're not upset that I'm going to kill you," he said.
[I lost. The defeated don't have a right to complain. When you go back, the system will give me the memories of these past four years so I can help you.]
"Will that happen to me too?" he asked. "I mean will I end up being part of the system when I die."
[Only until the demon king after you dies. If you don't want to end up like me, don't die.]
He snorted. The demon king made it sound so simple. Well, there was no way he was going to let himself get killed until he at least got his revenge. He would never forgive himself if he couldn't accomplish that much.
"How do we do this then?" he asked.
[Do you wish to return to the past?]
[All you have to do is say yes and then say how far you wish to go.]
"What will happen to her?" he asked, pointing his thumb at the angel.
Said angel flinched, and her eyes darted between them. Now that he mentioned it, she worried about what would happen to her. No one knew exactly how the time jumps worked. Did it cause the whole world to revert back, or did it create a new timeline?
She hoped it was the latter because it would mean she would be free of the demon king. On the other hand, if it was the former, she would probably still be his slave since the previous demon king said things adjusted for the new demon king.
[Anything you did to her that involved the system will be carried over in the past. That means when you return, she'll still be your slave. Whether or not she regains her memories is up for debate.]
"No, I refuse to accept him," she said as lunged at him.
Before she even got close to him, chain like marks appeared all over her body, and she collapsed to the ground screaming. She clawed at the marks as they watched calmly from the sidelines.
When it first happened right after he had made her into his slave, he had been shocked and a bit horrified. Seeing her suffering kick started his dislike for the system. It was one thing if he had purposely wanted to hurt her for all the things she put him through. It was another to inflict pain on her without meaning to.
He wasn't a sadist like the angels. He only hurt people he thought deserved it or if he had to. If hurting someone was needed for him to accomplish his goal, he would do it, but depending on the situation, he wouldn't always like it.
At least the demon king had explained why she was in pain. Since she was a slave, she wasn't allowed to do anything to harm or kill her master. The moment she did the marks would appear, inflicting pain onto her until she gave up trying.
"Just give up," he said. "You don't get a choice. This is what you get for messing with me." Choosing to ignore her, he looked back to the system message. "Yes, I would like to return to when I was first summoned four years ago."
[Returning to four years ago...]
"Hello, young heroes, thank you for answering our summons."Luke started as his mind tried to reorientate itself. Two sets of memories were warring in his mind, preventing him from being able to focus on what the angel in front of him was saying. By the time he had recovered slightly, the angel's speech was over, and several people were raising their hands or shouting at her."Hold on a minute. You can't just force us to be here. We have rights.""There's no way this can be real. Where are the cameras?""Fight? I've never fought in my entire life.""Yeah, why should we fight just because you say so? Send us back home."Suddenly, an unearthly golden glow shined from her form, silencing everyone. One part of his mind found himself at peace while the other part noted that she was using Angel's Aura, an ability all angels had which allowed them to sap a person's will to fight back. It only worked on those with lower stats than the user and didn't have the demonic attribute. The fact he kn
While he laid low, it wouldn't hurt for him to seek out allies. Not everyone had fallen into line with what the angel's wanted. Several had been wary of what the angels had to say. If what his scrambled memories of the future said was true, several people had been very outspoken about not trusting the angels before learning more about the world. Those people would later die under mysterious circumstances. No one had noticed any connections between them since it happened over the first year and in different locations in different ways. One died from a demon attack while another died in a training accident. It was chalked up to be because of how dangerous the world was, and the angels insisted that they be careful so that they wouldn't end up like them.Considering how wide the angels' influence was, it wouldn't be surprising if they got the natives involved to get rid of anyone that could convince the rest of the summoned people to not listen to the angels. He would have to approach th
Luke took the man's hand and said, "My name's Luke."Grace who had been about to take the man's hand had her hand still raised up and stared at him. She was probably confused by why he did that, but he was determined not to let his future party member get snatched up by another party before he had a chance to recruit her. He didn't know why she chose to follow him last time, but he didn't want to take the chance she would go to someone else. Things had already changed from last time because of him."I like your grip, young man," Anthony said. When he approached them, Anthony had only intervened because he couldn't stand men harassing women for no reason. She had obviously been nervous and shouting at her when everyone was just as agitated was absolutely unacceptable. He hadn't expected her to have such a protective boyfriend. He must have made his move too quickly for the boyfriend to act. It was nice to see some people hadn't lost their heads in this mess."Thank you," Luke said as t
"Heroes, thank the heavens you are here."He was beginning to get tired of everyone constantly calling them heroes. He knew it was part of the act but hearing them say one thing when they actually meant another infuriated him since he knew what they were talking about. When they said hero, they were actually calling them sacrifices. Fools. Pawns. He released his grip on Grace as she recovered from the teleportation. Scanning those that had ended up with him, he saw that he had lucked out, and members of his party had been teleported with him. With the sudden urgency from the angels, he hadn't hoped they would join him. If they have been sent to a different country, he would have lost out on recruiting them since traveling between countries wouldn't be easy.He did note that the group was much bigger than he remembered unless he was mistaken. The angels must have increased the group size since they were concerned about the missing demon king that chose this place as his territory.Amon
"You expect me to do what?" she shrieked."Quiet down. Are you trying to tell everyone?" he said as he uncovered his ears."They won't hear us unfortunately. The moment I arrived, I made sure no one would hear or see what we're doing. They'll just think you went to sleep," she said as she crossed her arms.He stared silently at her for a second before saying. "Well, that's mighty convenient."If she could do that all the time, then this was the perfect chance for him to speak with the previous demon king. He wouldn't have to wait for the right time and place to speak with him."I know what you're thinking, but unless you want all the angels to descend onto you, you can't talk to him right now," she said as she flipped her hair. His eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?""Everyone is on high alert for the missing demon king. They assumed he used his ability to turn back time to avoid his death and has gone underground," she said.Their assumption wasn't wrong. They had been on the right tr
"What did you just do?" she asked in barely above a whisper. His brows furrowed as he said, "I refused to let you throw your life away because the system said so."She snapped. "You're a demon. Not just any demon, you're the demon king."He glared as he spat out, "I didn't exactly ask to become the demon king. Whose fault do you think it is that I'm like this?"Even though he knew he was a demon king and the ones in the know also regarded him as a demon king, he hadn't physically nor mentally changed. Everything about him was still human, but that could easily change in the future. He didn't know the exact details of what would happen to him, but he had already decided that if he had no way to return home, that he would become a demon king for revenge. It had been the only path left open to him. To listen to her prattle on about how she expected him to be evil just because he was now a demon set his nerves on edge."Do you want to be treated like a slave so badly? Is that it? Should I
"Hold still. I need to touch your head to do this," she said as she reached out to him. He grimaced. "I don't exactly like this either okay." "You didn't do this last time," he pointed out. "When we summoned all of you, the connection was made the moment you appeared. This time I'm trying to establish a different connection using the old connection and me," she explained. Another thing they did to them without their consent. At this point, he couldn't say he was surprised. It was probably how the angels monitored them. As long as they used the angel's system, there was no way to avoid their eyes. That brought up an important question though. He frowned at the feeling of her hands on his head and asked, "If the connection was established right away, how was I not caught?" "It's because the connection wasn't fully established." At his expression, she continued, "While it's true that we hook you up to the system as soon as you arrive, it's more l
As if reading his thoughts, she demanded, "What do you think you're doing?" "I'm seeing what your system has to offer," he said. "Stop," she demanded as she waved her hands in front of his face. She wanted to do more than that but had to settle for this. "Don't you dare do anything." He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Is there any particular reason why?" "Unless you want to be caught by the angels, you'd better do nothing." Hearing that, he put his hand down and waited for her to explain. "Even though you're making use of my access, if you try to use it in a way I wouldn't use it, the others will know something isn't right." That made sense. If there was any unusual activity on the account, normally people would suspect that something was wrong with the person using it or someone else was using the account. He had just assumed that the angels would be too arrogant to suspect that a human or rather a demon king would secretly use their system rig
