Chapter 6- Puzzled Unto the Darkness 1

Later in the evening Eric and some other survivors were all busy constructing a plank used to cover up the windows of the hotel.

“Do you think this would keep whatever is out there away?” Eric asked with skepticism to Devian after building the plank.

Devian was leaning against the side of the wooden board with his arms crossed over his chest. He shrugged before replying, “I don't know, but we should try. There has to be another way. Besides, what choice do we have?"

Eric shifted his gaze to the receptionist holding a little cross while whispering and praying. A couple of police officers were watching over him.

“I will be back,” he said as he approached one of the receptionists, who stops working when Eric approaches.

“Hello miss," he said on his arrival before the receptionist answered him.

“Sir, can I help you?” the woman asked, smiling at him while holding up her sign.

“Do you have a place I can charge my phone?”

“Huh? yes ” she answered after rolling her eyes.

“Great, I would like to charge it now please” he answered back.

She looked at him for a moment with a bored expression before responding “You just go through that hallway you find the door to the basement. There you will find a place”

Eric thanked her before turning around to start walking away with the phone in his hand.

As he walked he noticed the light all dying out slowly around him.

“What the fuck is going on?” Eric asked himself but heard no reply.

He opened the heavy basement door, seeing everything dark and blurry. It took him some time, but he finally found the room. As he enters the large room it gets even colder than outside.

Finally, he comes in contact with a charging spot where he kneels hurriedly and charges his phone. When he finally turned it on, the notification on the display made him jump up from the cold floor to grab his phone.

After the notification disappeared from his phone screen, immediately after a video call enters.

It was a clown face, smiling brightly at him. Eric stares at it with wide eyes while feeling extremely frightened by this sudden encounter. Suddenly, a loud screeching noise comes out of the clown's mouth, followed by loud laughter echoing in his ear.

The clown laughs louder and harder making Eric even more terrified than he already was. He throws aside his phone rushing towards the basement door which already banged closed behind him. He slams his body on the door, trying to open it, but it was locked from the outside.

Suddenly the town alarm goes on, as the night began to fall fast, bringing darkness to this abandoned city.

Inside the Hotel, all of the others looked around in wonder. While watching the darkness take over the town, then everywhere all turned quite like a graveyard.

Eric, in the meantime, was laying on his back on the dirty ground. His head rested on a piece of wood that was laying beside him, and he could feel that he had lost consciousness. He looks around the dusty town with his eyes closed. The last thing he remembers hearing was the bell ring loudly as a warning signal of the approaching danger, but the bells didn't stop ringing.

Eric opens his eyes and finds himself on the floor. The sun was still shining brightly outside. Looking back into the hotel room, he sees Devian talking with Devon.

Looking at Devian, Eric realizes the latter is looking at a window. Eric follows his direction and notices the same blackness as before covering the streets with darkness, except for the buildings of the town that was still lit up. Then suddenly the world around him begins to change. Instead of being in the same dusty town with its same grey and dirty sky, he now stands in a grassy clearing that is covered in white clouds.

Then Eric realizes that the sun is setting, and with that realization, he starts running, ignoring the fear that suddenly fills him.

He runs through the field while looking forward to the sight of houses that lay ahead. But he keeps moving further and further without realizing that the street is getting smaller and shorter. Soon enough, Eric stops running and turns around. The field is nothing anymore but a barren patch of soil with trees surrounding it.

His heart beats faster with every second, he tries to move in any direction, hoping he would get some kind of clue, or anything at all to prove that he was wrong. That this field is the city of New York. But he kept walking and walking with the growing distance between him and that field, his mind becoming more and more blank, and filled with fear instead.

When the field was no longer visible to him, Eric stopped and started to breathee heavily. After a little while, he starts walking again. Looking around him, he saw a large building on his right, a building that he was th. Walking inside the building, he was shocked at its size of it.

Eric stepped into the lobby of the big hall. The lobby had glass windows covering each end of the hall.

There he sees dozens of people standing in line waiting patiently for something.

Eric moves forward until a lady calls out for him from the end of the line.

“Eric!” she says waving at him “Come here”

Eric looks at the people ahead of him in confusion. He walks toward her with confusion written all over his face.

“How many are left? How many were there? What did you guys hear? Are any of them still alive? Do you know where everyone else is?” she asked him quickly and urgently.

Eric just stared at her dumbfounded, his thoughts completely blank. Eventually, he shook his head no.

She looks at him sadly for a moment before she speaks again “Okay, well, you need to check the basement”

“Hm? basement? basement? Where did you hear about that? Why am I going there? Did you say basement? Is it the basement in front of us? How do you know that? Why is nobody telling me what is happening? Who are you? Why am I in here? Why are there so many people in the basement?!”

she held her hands up defensively in an attempt to calm him down, “okay, okay...calm down. Take some deep breaths and listen” She said to him calmly.

Eric calmed down slightly and did as she said and waited for her to continue “Okay, so I know this must be confusing. Just remember that this isn't our first time traveling somewhere else, I'm sure we will get the answers we want sooner rather than later”

“So how long is earlier? Can I ask?” Eric replied curiously.

She let out a small sigh and smiled slightly, “We came here yesterday night. We went to sleep and woke up today at 4 pm. This morning when I got up early, I decided to come with you to get more information,” she explained and Eric thought she sounded That's good,” he said smiling back at her. He didn't expect her answer, but he was happy to have someone he knows and trusts nearby, “So why are we here?”

“Oh yeah sorry about that,” she said as she scratched her forehead embarrassed “we didn't want to tell you that because it doesn't add too much importance to your situation here. Well, we have never been to that part of the village before, which is not exactly very far. So we decided to visit there”

“Why the sudden change of scenery? And how is your head feeling? Does anything hurt?”

“No, I'm fine thanks. Everything seems fine. And if it was my brain that needed the rest, it wouldn't be so bad. The head hurts because...because I have no idea why...” Eric couldn't finish his sentence without bursting into tears.

“Hey, hey look,” she said taking Eric's shoulders lightly iit's’s alright,”

Eric looked at her confused “But why? Why did I have to come here? It feels so strange...so unreal…” he muttered quietly.

She sighed sadly while shaking her head “you know Eric, I can only guess what happened, I don't know anything else about that time other than that we had a lot of troubles and we had to run and hide. But you are not alone here, it will not always be like this”

Eric just stared at her for a while, still feeling uneasy, before he spoke again “So if I wanted to talk to someone who knows a lot about that time, who would I try to talk to?”

He watched her face carefully.

“I have to think about that one,” she answered him slowly, “but I don't think you are that person”

“So you know where to find me then? You're sure you're not mistaken?” he questioned looking into her eyes while raising his eyebrow slightly.

“Yes. If that’s what happened then that person will show up soon” she answered confidently, “but until that happens, you should try to stay calm and not think too much, okay?”

Eric nodded silently.
