The road was long and free and Seth drove down to his wife's company with the wind whistling inaudible things into his ear.

He seemed to have arrived rather quickly than anticipated but the important thing was, he was there now and he needed to get the documents to his wife.

He got down from his bike and took off his crash helmet before picking up the document and starting towards the entrance of the tall building.

As he was about to step in, one of the security guards at the entrance barricaded his path with his buff body as he spoke in a bold and thick voice. “State your business here boy!”

Seth opened his mouth to speak but the other security guard spoke before him. “What do you mean to state his business? Can't you see already why he is here?”

“Right.” The security guard looked at Seth. “Ms. Patterson is busy at the moment and isn't taking any visitors for the rest of the day. Tell us what kind of problem you have and the assistant you need.

“Do yourself the favor of including your contact if you want us to ever get back to you.” The man said sternly to Seth.

‘My problems?’ Seth asked himself.

There were people who desperately needed money for one thing or the other and aimlessly strolled around for help.

Some of them would walk into a company's building to ask for help and sometimes, they got lucky.

But Seth wasn't one of those people. He was dressed in his best clothes but yet he got referred to as an upgraded beggar.

A beggar was still a beggar though.

“Uhm, no, I have no problems actually. I am here to see my wife, she forgot something important so I would like to hand it to her in person.” Seth responded. He didn't even seem offended at all that he was referred to as an upgraded beggar.

He wasn't dressed in an expensively purchased suit with a glittering diamond wrist watch around his wrist so he couldn't blame them for the misunderstanding.

“Your wife?” The security guard arched his brow at him. He didn't say it with his mouth but he did with his face. He was surprised that such a poorly dressed man was actually with a wife at such age and time.

How did he manage to feed her when he couldn't dress in at least last year's fashion sense? The security guard couldn't help but to feel sorry for whichever woman he had gotten married to.

She probably starved all day and wore rags. If his wife was ever beautiful then she must have gotten so ugly from all the starvation and poverty.

He obviously wasn't the type to afford expensive cosmetics for his partner to take good care of her skin so she probably looked a lot more older than her age which he suspected to be quite young.

“Yes, my wife.” Seth responded confidently. He didn't know what it was the man had on his mind and he chose not to care.

All he wanted to do was to meet with Phoebe to give her the important documents and probably thank her for the new bike she had gotten him since he hadn't gotten the chance to do it.

“Who's your wife? Is it perhaps the cleaning lady? Because if it is then she didn't come in to work today, you should know that much about your own wife!” The first security guard firmly said.

“No, my wife isn't the cleaner, she is–”

“Not the cleaner? Hmm, there are two people in charge of cleaning though, one is in charge of the toilets alone while the other is in charge of the main floors. Beatrice and Lori, none of them? “ The security guard arched his brow.

“No sir, none of them, my wife actually is–”

“--oh is your wife the one that runs all of the errand for the staff? Bethany! Yeah that's her name.”

“Hey, Bethany may be broke but she is a very beautiful woman and she would obviously not stoop so low into marrying a poor man.”

“Yeah you're right, you know the other day, I asked her if she was married or in a relationship but she seemed really discreet about it. Then I went on ahead and…”

The men began to chat about Bethany and things that were far from relevant to Seth who waited patiently for them to finish their conversation and have his time.

Eventually, his patience ran out and he just had to speak up. “Excuse me! Please!” Both men looked at him in surprise but he decided to speak on. “My name is Seth Rivera and my wife is Phoebe Patterson.

“She forgot a very important document at home this morning and I was asked to bring it over for her.” He explained himself.

Both men seemed dumbfounded at first. The husband or the CEO? Rumors had been carried about in the office about how useless he was and how easy it was to tell that he always dined and wined with poverty just by looking at his face.

The security guards broke into laughter just then. One of them even had to put a hand on Seth's shoulder to balance himself as he guffawed.

Seth was left wondering what was so funny from what he had just said, perhaps they were thinking he was lying. “I'm not kidding, Phoebe really is my wife.” He stated firmly.

“Oh so sorry, I know. You're the son in law of the Patterson family they are always talking about. No wonder, so it is true, you really are as poor and irrelevant as they said you to be.”

Seth didn't say anything to respond to the man's words. Who knew he was known by so many people at her company?

“Can you please just let me through? I would like to hand her the documents now.” He tried to sound firm and a little strict.

But the last thing any of those men would give to him was respect. “Oh don't worry about stepping your feet inside that place. We have been told about your arrival, I just didn't expect it to be someone like you. Either way, just hand us the document and be on your way already, we'll take it to Ms. Paterson ourselves.”

“No thank you, I was ordered to take this document to her myself and not to pass it down to anyone else. It is very important that I see her and hand it to her in person.” Seth adamantly said.

“This is no time to be stubborn, young man, just do as you're being told and hand us the document.” The other guard said as his face scrunched into an ugly frown.

Just then, a BMW parked in front of the company, almost knocking over Seth's bike and a young handsome man stepped down from the car dressed in a black expensive suit.

His black perfectly shined shoe kissed the earth so gently as he walked towards the guards while a bouquet of ever so yellow lilies was held firmly in his hand along with a white purchase bag from one of the most expensive designers in the whole of Kingston city.

Seth stared at the man wondering why he felt so familiar. The elegance and grace in his step as he walked and the aura of pride floating around him.

His eyes squinted at the man as he stared when suddenly, realization hit him at the back of the head.

How could he ever forget the face of such an egoistic man who outrightly embarrassed him in front of a crowd?

The two security guards stood with their chest puffed out and the frowns on their face had dissipated.

“Mr Murray, welcome. Ms. Patterson has been expecting you.” One of them said in a gentle and respectful tone.

The man simply responded with a slight nod before continuing into the building. He barely spared any attention to them which Seth perceived as rude and egoistic.

But then again, he wasn't any different to him when he proposed to his own wife in his presence.

Marlin Murray was a man who never associated with those he felt were utterly beneath him unless it was to give an order or a command.

He was born with pride and unlike so many others, he liked to rate people according to their amount of wealth.

If you were one dollar beneath his wealth then respect should be the last thing to expect from him.

Seth didn't like the fact that his wife was meeting with such a man and his feelings pushed his feet forward but the guards stopped him again.

Seth held back the urge to curse at the man. “What is the meaning of this? How can you let him in and not me?”

“Why won't you just give up? Are you so blind or are you just feigning ignorance?!” The guard growled at him.

“What do you mean by that?” Seth asked confusedly.

“Can't you see the signs? Ms. Patterson is soon to become Mrs Murray! Never found it weird that she still refers to herself as Ms.?” The guards stated in a firm tone.

“You must be really foolish to think that Ms. Patterson will stick with a useless nobody like you when there is someone like Mr Murray reaching out his hand for her to hold! Open your eyes and leave now when things are still calm before you will get forcefully kicked out of their home!” The other security guard added.

Seth stumbled back a little. His wife was soon to become Mrs Murray? Did that security know what he was saying at all?

No! It must all be nothing but crazy talk! He would never lose his wife to such an egoistic jerk!

Thank goodness he hadn't taken out the perfumes and cosmetics that were inside the bag in his hand. If not, Seth might have broken them on the floor.“I'm going to punish you for this! "What Regret"

“Regret,” she said with a sneer. Regret is just a euphemism for guilt. It doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t wipe the slate clean, and it definitely does not heal the mess that you made.‘Christian,’ she said softly, ‘don’t come any closer.’ He stopped, as she decided to step back from him.Phoebe flared up again and asked him: “You said you came for the truth?” “Fine. Here’s the truth, Christian. I loved you. With everything I had. And you destroyed me. You were able to make me question myself in ways that I never knew existed. And now you stand here, asking me for what? Closure? Redemption? Forgiveness?”“No,” he said firmly. All I am demanding is an opportunity to prove that I can improve.” That I am better.”She scoffed. “And you believe that one conversation is going to make a difference?” You think I can just what? Stare at you and forget the years I struggled to climb up the ladder and get a life again?“No,” he repeated again, and there was no quiver in his voice. “But I can’t

Christian did not answer this for a while. He looked down, his hands were tightly bunched into fists at his sides. “I know it caused pain,” he said, his voice rising in a hoarse whisper. “I know I can’t undo that. But I can’t just let things be this way. Not anymore. If that means living with your hatred then let it be so.Phoebe only chuckled bitterly and began to pace in front of the fire. ‘Christian, you keep saying all the right things.’ Saying sorry, admitting my mistake, promising to take my anger on myself. But you don’t seem to understand. It’s not about you. Not anymore.”He stared at her with a frown on his face. “Then what is it about?”“It’s about me,” she said angrily, turning to him. ‘That’s about the years I’ve spent struggling to climb out of the pit you dug for me to fall into.’ It is about finding out how to be independent, how to live without the feeling that my chest is going to collapse. It’s about healing, or at least, about trying to put myself back together aft

Of losing you, of not being good enough. But I stayed. I fought. And you didn’t.”“I know,” he said and his eyes welled up with tears. “And I hate myself for that. I wish I could have been stronger and did not leave when I did. But I’m here now, Phoebe. And I’m not running this time.”She glared at him and her eyes were red with rage, hurt and something else which she could not describe. “You say that now,” she whispered. But what happens when things get hard again? This begs the question, what happens when the cracks start to show?“They won’t,” he said firmly. “Because I’ve come to realize that running in particular does not solve anything. It’s convenient. You were waiting until you felt I was ready and powerful enough to take the news. Until you thought I didn’t need you anymore.”“That is not true,” Christian said quickly, getting up, his voice a high pitched note. “I have been taking this guilt with me every day since I left.” I did not return because of convenience. I returned because I could not continue living such a life knowing that I destroyed something that was wonderful.Phoebe whirled on her toes, glaring. “And what about me? Have you ever thought what it feels like to wake up every day with the marks you have made on others? To have to break yourself down and begin to build yourself up again from scratch just to have the one who was responsible for tearing you down appear with an apology?”“I do now,” he said quietly. “Because I do, I see it in your eyes. I hear it in your voice. And I hate myself for being the reason it’s there.”She was breathing raggedly, her hands were balled up at her sides. “You don’t

To be able to admit that I can change the future but I can’t change the present and I can’t change the past.”Phoebe scoffed. ‘You really believe that taking responsibility is sufficient?’ You really believe that saying you were wrong in any of this makes it alright?”“No,” Christian said quickly. “It doesn’t make it okay. Nothing can make it okay. But it’s a start, isn’t it? A step toward being better. Towards becoming a person who does not destroy things.”Phoebe looked at her sister with her face impassive and then shook her head. “You want to be better? Good for you. But you don’t get to use me as your redemption arc. I am not some check-point on your way to self-improvement.”“I’m not asking you to be,” Christian said, his voice quiet, but commanding. And part of that means realizing how much I caused you pain.”Phoebe’s lips formed, her arms drawn tightly around her in the manner of a shield. “It does not heal the wound, Christian.” Oh do you think that knowing you regret it will give me back the time I lost? The trust I lost? The parts of me that had to be reconstructed?”“No,” replied Christian, who now looked ashamed. “I don’t. And I’m not asking you to forget what I did or even forgive me. I still can’t fathom how difficult it must have been for you.”Phoebe looked at her and shook her head, fuming again. “And you didn’t just hurt me, Christian.” You made me doubt, everything, including us, including myself.
