"Today, I stand before you to announce the newest addition to our family." Lloyd Kingston started, speaking to the multitude of guests present.
Micheal leaned in, waiting for his name to be spoken, to finally be acknowledged. For three years, he had been married to Lloyd's daughter, Melissa Kingston, but he had always been treated like a piece of shit. He was never allowed in family gatherings neither did anyone consider him as one of the Kingstons.
But tonight, Melissa herself had invited him to this dinner hosted by the Kingstons. The family must be ready to finally embrace him. His chest swelled with hope, his name on the tip of his tongue.
"I would love to announce a special someone to you all tonight. The one who has won the heart of my princess, Melissa" Lloyd added as he smiled brightly. Melissa could not help but grin wildly as she looked at her father.
"My one and only son-in-law would come up the stage to join us now. " He continued and Michael could not help but feel so happy.
" Finally!" He muttered under his breath. His wife's family was finally going to accept him. His joy knew no bounds as he stood excited expecting his name to be called.
"With great pleasure, I present to you……"
His eyes was watching with eagerness. This was surely going to be his best day ever.
"......Peter Anderson!" Lloyd called out loudly to the audience's hearing.
A wave of disbelief crashed over Michael as another name reverberated in the air, shattering his expectations. The crowd erupted in cheers, completely unaware of his existence. The world around him spun, his heart heavy with disappointment.
His dreams of validation and acceptance crumbled, leaving him standing alone in a sea of congratulatory voices, his hopes dashed once more.
"Melissa had another husband?"
The name "Peter Anderson" echoed in his ears, a name that was not his own, a name that shattered the hopes he had carried into the evening.
The grand ballroom buzzed with laughter and clinking glasses as the spotlight shifted to the figure walking onto the stage.
Dressed in a finely tailored suit far luxurious than his, Michael watched the said Peter Anderson walk majestically towards the stage to meet Melissa and her father much to his dismay.
" No, this can't be happening!" He muttered wearily under his breath. He was supposed to be the one on that stage now and not some stranger he had not seen at all in his life.
Three years ago, he was adopted by an elderly man known as Martins who took him in and played the role of his grandfather. Martins had arranged a marriage pact between him and Melissa's family. But, after his adopted grandfather died, they turned him into a servant, making him do the dirty works of a maid in their mansion and never treating him like a husband to Melissa.
When he received a phone call from Melissa tonight, inviting him to come to the grand ball, it felt like the world was about to begin anew. Micheal rushed down here in the finest suits he could find for himself. Sadly, he came all the way down here to watch his wife get handed to another man. He could not restrain his bitterness.
How could his wife do this to him?
He watched as Peter Anderson ascended the stage with a grin on his face, basking in the attention and accolades. He stood next to Melissa and her father, exuding an air of confidence and belonging that he could only dream of.
Confusion, anger, and humiliation surged within Michael. He felt like an outsider in his own life, once again pushed to the sidelines, invisible to those around him.
" This cannot be happening, I demand an explanation" he whispered.
Peter Anderson was the heir of a very wealthy family, but he was not Melissa's husband. Micheal was.
As the applause continued, his eyes locked with hers for a brief moment. He searched for some sign, some explanation for this shocking turn of events but her gaze was cold. She turned her face away and kissed Peter deeply right before his eyes.
She had invited him to this event, given him a glimmer of hope, only to have that hope mercilessly crushed before his eyes. His wife, the one person he had believed he could count on, had betrayed him.
The whispers of the crowd seemed to dance around him as he tried to maintain his composure. They were laughing at him that moment. He wished that the ground could open up and swallow him.
"Did you hear? He thinks he can fit into the rich men shoes!"
"Looks like the prodigal son finally made an appearance."
Amidst the taunts, Michael summoned the courage to head to the stage too. He needed an explanation.
" Melissa!" He called out loud as he climbed the stage.
" What are you doing? I am your husband" he added further " You invited me here, remember? You told me that I was needed at the family party." He said, reminding her.
"Melissa! Mr. Kingston?" Michael called them both. "Melissa, please explain to your father, tell him we're together….I love you" he said, trying to explain that he still cared so much about her.
"Don't you dare move close to me!" Melissa said coldly as he tried to hold her hands.
"Who the hell is this church rat?" Peter Anderson asked Melissa as he stared disgustingly at Michael.
"He must have gotten his suit from the trash can just to fit in" Peter added which made everyone burst out in a loud laughter.
"Don't you move any inch close to my wife you pauper" Peter shouted. " Get this Godforsaken bastard away from here" he motioned to the security men in the hall.
"Melissa, please talk to me!" Michael yelled out of frustration, he still wanted an explanation from her. Why had she chosen to invite him to get so humiliated?
Before he knew it, strong hands knocked into him, sending him sprawling onto the floor. Gasps and laughter erupted from the audience, the humiliation seeping into his bones.
They seized him, dragging him away from the stage. They hauled him up like he was a piece of shit and practically tossed him out of the party.
As the entrance door swung shut, he stood with his shoulder dropped as he recounted everything that happened in the hall.
A shadowy figure approached him minutes later. It was Melissa, she stood before him, her eyes devoid of any compassion. Without a word, she tossed a stack of papers onto his face.
"Those are our divorce papers" she said simply.
"Wait! What??" Michael exclaimed. After the intense humiliation inside, she was still not done with shocking him.
"Why are you doing this to me?"
"I have no time to talk to a piece of trash like you. " She spat "Get those paper signed Mike. We're officially over". She added and went back in, slamming the door shut against his face.
With no destination in mind, Michael wandered the dimly lit streets. His thoughts were a whirlwind of regret and despair.
He was once again left all alone. Was he cursed to always be alone? He had always been an orphan, abandoned. And he had found hope in his late grandfather who adopted him and introduced him to the Kingstons. Now that his grandfather was dead and his wife's family had severed ties with him, he had nowhere to go.
Alone on the dark streets, Michael's heartache mingled with the physical pain from his fall. He aimlessly wandered through the city streets, consumed by a sense of helplessness.
He was lost in his thoughts and didn't see that he was headed towards a car. Tires screeched, and a blinding impact sent him spiraling into darkness.
As his vision blurred and darkness closed in, Michael believed he was slipping away, that death was finally claiming him. Maybe he could just die there and then to be free of all the humiliation and hurt he was subjected to.
Laying there, unconscious, a figure walked towards him from the darkness. Observing Micheal in his helplessness, the figure pulled a phone to their ear.
"This is Michael, sir. We finally found him."
Micheal woke up in a room, white walls surrounding him. Blinking away grogginess, he looked around and realized he was in a luxurious suite, far different from his expectations. He heard soft beeping filling the air." Where am I?" He asked himself as he tried to sit up. With his gaze searching around, he saw that he was in a hospital room. It was one that exudes luxury. The soft sheets, ornate furniture, and muted lighting were a stark contrast to the ground he had been lying on moments before. Confusion gripped him as he tried to piece together what had happened. The door creaked open, and a nurse entered. "Good to see you are finally awake, young master, you've been in a coma for a week.""A week?" Michael croaked, disbelief evident in his voice."Yes, young master." The nurse responded with a happy glint spread around her face, bowing.Micheal could not understand. Why was she calling him young master? Was he mistaken for someone else? Before he could get a full grasp of the situ
"That is not possible." Micheal refuted flatly. "My grandfather would never wish for this. He would rather sell it all and give the money to the orphanage than allow it to go this way."Attorney Benedict responded with a smirk. "Your father? You seem to forget where you belong, Micheal. The orphanages. Mr Martins saw you as just another charity case."His words were spoken with a cold sting, piercing into Micheal's heart and causing deep pain. Mrs Kingston and her son could be heard laughing in mockery, happy that Micheal had been disgraced like that by his foster father's lawyer."If you have nothing else to say, you can step out now. We are quite busy right now as you can see."Benedict showed him the door. Micheal could not believe it. The man his father trusted with all his life and properties had been bought away by the deceitful games of the Kingstons. He was going to give possession of everything to them!"This is not right..." He mumbled, still unable to come to terms with thi
"What did you say Micheal did? Are you sure about this?"Melissa was stunned at the news which her brother had presented to her. She could not believe that her ex husband could one day grow the nerves or the guts to ever look her family in the face, not to talk of disrespecting them in front of others."I am sure about what I am saying, sister. He tried to physically attack me and mother, he even punched me in the face. The lawyer Benedict was there! You can ask him!"He showed her a reddened part of his face as evidence of Micheal's brutality. It was all a lie, he made himself up to look that way."And when he was taken away by the Colwill girl, he threatened to destroy us and everything we have."Melissa's eyes grew deep with doubts. The words her brother spoke made no sense to her. Not only did Micheal do the impossible by attacking her family, he also found a way to be friends with a member of the Colwills? No. This must be a joke. She turned to her mother, hoping to hear that Mod
"I'm guessing that would be your former wife on the phone." Alegria Colwill noted as Micheal replaced his phone into his pocket.Former wife? Micheal scoffed. His divorce with Melissa was only a few days ago, but it seemed like everybody knew about it already. Even the ever busy Alegria Colwill."Stop with the pity face. I had to make my research about you before coming out here." Alegria added, noticing the look of surprise that Micheal wore. She was indeed a perfect beauty, with the confidence of a tigress and an aura of class. There was no way she would naturally take heed to lazy rumors be it from other people's lips or from the news channels. Especially since the story was about the Kingstons who were far lower than the Colwills in the ranking of the class of families.Besides, Micheal realized that there was not much connection between the Colwills and the Imperials. The Imperials were way above the level of the Colwills as it was with anybody else, but he could not understand
Leo Dane was in his well furnished apartment, reeking of immense wealth and riches. He was having a sumptuous meal with his wife when one of his house maids came to meet him with an announcement."Sir, your visitors are here to see you.""My visitors..." He suddenly recalled that he had a meeting with a representative of the Anderson family today. It had skipped his mind for a moment."Sure sure. Let them in."Peter Anderson and Melissa walked into the beautiful interiors of Dane's abode. Such a beauty it was, and they could not deny it."Welcome, you two." Dane's wife welcomed them joyfully. She looked particularly happy to receive them even though she had no idea that her husband had a meeting with anyone in their home today. "It pleases my heart to see young couples in love. You both look so beautiful together."Her words made Melissa blush, and Peter responded with a smile as they were offered a seat at the dining hall with the Danes."I don't recall asking you to bring your wife
Realizing that the man whom he ordered to be taken care of by Peter Anderson might be the heir to the Imperial holdings, Leo Dane scrambled his way towards his own gate, his tail between his legs."Where is he?!" He screamed at the security men. None of them could grasp what he meant at once."Sir.. who.. who are you talking about...?"Agitated, he grabbed one of them by the collar and dragged him closer. "The strange man who wanted to see me, where is he now?"His voice held a dark glint, sufficient enough to ring the bell of memories. "The low life? Mr Anderson asked us to get rid of him as soon as we were done teaching him a lesson. Just as you asked."Leo Dane's eyes furrowed in rage. What have they done? To Michael Imperial? To Albert Imperial's grandson?! He knew for sure he was in trouble now, and all this was because of that one dumb man - Peter Anderson."That son of a bitch!!"He dragged the poor security man even closer by his collar. "Go out there now and find that stran
The private jet landed with a resounding smoothness. It was like a golden bird landing from the skies, coloured in the shiny stripes of silver. The door spread open like a shooting row of steps, leading all the way down to the feet of the waiting crew.Leo Dane, his wife and his men stood in anticipation, ready to welcome Albert Imperial into his humble abode. No matter how wealthy Dane had now become, it was all due to the Imperial influence and his money was nothing compared to what the Imperials had. This was why he had a strong feeling of paranoia as his boss approached closer. How would he tell him that he had turned away his grandson right at his gates? And that too after subjecting him to physical assault?"It is nice to finally see you after all these while, Leo. I can see you're making the most of your time off from duty." Albert Imperial met Leo Dane with a smile, putting a hand on his shoulder. One could tell that the chairman was weak from the way he walked and talked. Ye
" Peter, what just happened?" Melissa asked immediately she noticed Peter stopped the car. He reversed and packed by the side of the road. She knew that the very short conversation he had just had with his father didn't turn out well." What's going on Peter, answer me? What did he say happened?" She asked again, the tension palpable in the air that instant as she noticed her husband's formerly happy demeanor contort into a frown." I don't know Melissa, I don't know!" He said, raising his voice. " I don't even understand why my dad is mad" " He told me to find a solution to the problem I caused"" Problem?" Melissa asked shocked " What problem? We've just met the personal assistant to the chairman himself. This man also holds a great position in Imperial Holdings, how could there be a problem?"And, we've got proofs too. Didn't you tell him?" Melissa asked." How could I when he hung up already before I even got the chance to say Jack Robinson" Peter muttered." W.. what's going on
