Chapter 4.

Austin's heart couldn't stop beating fast since the moment George Melmer mentioned that the vase was fake. His tongue became tied and he tried talking but he could not.

He thought his end had come soon and he was slowly preparing for his doom. His grandmother who left the room for some seconds was hearing people shouting and quarreling and she knew something was up.

"How dare you say that? What do you know?" Austin fired at George who swallowed a huge lump of saliva down his throat.

It was clear that Austin was trying to cover up his mischievous deeds but nobody was wise enough to see this.

Austin was frozen in fear deep down. His grandmother had taken a glance at the vase before and didn't notice that it was fake. That would have been his saving grace but now, this son of a pig commented on it.

"We both know the truth will be out soon. I can't believe someone like you will stoop so low and get a fake case for your grandmother," George responded to his firing. Austin shot an angry glare at him but George just chuckled.

After all the bragging about how he got her expensive gifts. It was a great disappointment that he got fake gifts for his own grandmother.

George could still feel the pain of the taints from him. His little gifts were flung away because he couldn't reach the bar they had set for him.

"How sure am I that the car you bought for her isn't fake too?" George asked and everyone seated gasped. His wife readjusted herself on her seat. She wanted to stop George before he caused any further damage but she couldn't.

George was ready for Austin today and he will do everything possible to let the cat out of the bag.

"That is an insult, George Melmer. You can't insult Austin like that. You guys are not close to each other in terms of wealth," one of the family members warmed George and George smiled cockily.

"Exactly!!!" The others said in unison and Austin nodded but that was not the end.

He was expecting something hot from George. He never knew that a day would come when he would get really afraid of George.

"At least I don't get fake things," George mocked and Austin rushed towards him. Everybody stood up from their seat and separated both of them before it would lead to something else.

In all, George was still as calm as ice. He didn't let all these get to him as he had calculated all his moves.

Austin started panting really hard. He couldn't control his anger and the feeling of getting caught in the act. His eyes roamed around the place as he thought his doom would come soon. He missed her the first time, he will definitely not miss her the second time.

His grandmother is an expert in antiques and would tell the difference in a second. That was what he narrowly escaped.

If she discovers, they will have to check the car he bought and he will lose a lot of things. The possibility of him being cast out of the family is very high. No one has ever done something as stupid as this in their family.

If his father knew about it, he is doomed. He gritted his teeth and various thoughts were running through his mind. He needed to do something about it but he didn't know what.

"What is going on here? I see you all have planned to ruin my birthday party today," Madam Patricia shouted from the top of the stairs with her tiny voice.

Just a few minutes, she was away, the whole house had been turned upside down.

Everyone held their breath to see how this would go. The rest of the family members returned to their seats and Austin could not look his Grandmother in her eyes. A feeling of guilt came upon him.

"George accused Austin of getting a fake vase for you," Anna narrated to madam Patricia. Her grandmother stood there in awe, thinking about how that came about in the first place.

Anna thought ma'am Patricia may treat George a little bit better if he’s done something for her. But, no. Instead, he is throwing tantrums all over the place.

She knew that George was her husband and she could not help but stay by his side sometimes. Afterall, he’s her husband.

Deep down, she was a little mad at herself. Why couldn't she resist the urge to trust this man she called her husband? He has done nothing to deserve her trust. She felt like smashing her head against the wall.

Every minute that passes, she continues to regret every single move she took. She glanced at madam Patricia's face and the look on her face was not pleasing at all. Something must have gone wrong somewhere.

"How sure is he that the vase is fake?" Madam Patricia asked and George and Austin looked at themselves. Austin's eyes looked remorseful but deep down, he wasn't. He just didn't want George to spill more secrets.

"Please, Grandmother. You know the poor will always look for lies to tell. Don't forget you took a look at it earlier," Austin chipped in and his grandmother nodded.

"You are right. I did look at it and I didn't notice any…," Madam Patricia was cut short by George in a rather rude manner. It was a crime in their family to cut her short but George was in haste.

"I think you didn't look at it slowly. You were in a rush. At a single glance, I knew it was a fake," George interrupted and murmurs filled the room.

"You should be flung out of the house for cutting our grandmother shut. Abrupt nonsense!" Another member of the family threw in and everyone agreed with him.

"It's fine, it's fine. I will just take a look at it again," she agreed and George's mind

"He knows nothing about antiques, grandmother. Don't believe this poverty stricken being," Austin said in a shaky voice. He wished that the ground could open up and swallow him.

Madam Patricia moved towards the table where the vase was placed. Every step she took, Austin said a prayer to God. Telling him not to let his grandmother disgrace him in front of everyone.

If he gets away with this, George will be severely dealt with.

Madam Patricia raised up the vase slowly and took a thorough look at the vase. It was as if Austin's heartbeat stopped. He closed his eyes when she turned to everyone in the room.

"This vase is a real deal. It is worth even more than millions," she disclosed and everyone jeered.

Geroge couldn't believe his ears and Austin could not contain his joy that he almost jumped up.

"I really appreciate this valuable gift from my grandson. Thank you so much Austin, you are blessed," she added and Austin bowed slightly, his heart filled with so much joy.

Once again, George had felt like a fool. His wife buried her head in shame. She could not explain why George had to always disgrace her this way.

"Can you see for yourself that you are nothing but a fool?" Someone asked George and the whole family scorned George Melmer.

"He thinks he can barge in here and spill nonsense from his mouth. He should be punished!" Anna's uncle who has been watching all these while finally said.

Austin was astonished by the outcome of everything. He didn't expect it to turn out this way. Now, he finally has the chance to deal with George but he needs to tread slowly.

"I think there is a mistake somewhere. I…," George Melmer tried explaining to him but he was immediately shut up by Madam Patricia.

"Why would you question Austin?" Madam Patricia asked George sharply. She turned the arrow towards George and made sure it was sharp enough to pierce him in his heart.

"I…it was..I mean..," George stuttered and Austin shook his head. He tried concealing his laughter before everyone.

"You what? You don't have a reason? You suddenly felt like ridiculing him, didn't you?" Madam Patricia asked but George shook his head.

"You are taking it the wrong way grandmother," George said, finally finding his tongue.

"I am not your grandmother. Your grandmother is a poor fellow. Don't say that to me again," the rage that followed after these words were enough to burn down a building.

"I'm sorry, ma," George apologized to her, with his head bowed down.

"I don't need your apology, Mr! See the person you need to apologize to for making him look like a fool," she snapped, pointing at the direction where Austin was standing.

"I'm sorry, Austin," George apologized and immediately that word came out of his mouth. A thought struck him.

He was definitely sure that the vase was fake. He was also sure that madam Patricia saw that too but she decided not to expose her favorite grandchild.
