Chapter 5.

George couldn't believe that an apology came out of his mouth. That was the only thing he had to do because he didn't want this matter on the ground to blow up more than usual.

He actually regretted doing it and the look on his wife's face was not welcoming at all. He was convinced that after this party saga, his wife will slash out her angry venom on him.

He has many charges against him. Being poor was one of them. That was the greatest offense he had ever committed as a man.

"Is that an apology? Do you expect me to take that as an apology?" Austin blew up. George couldn't comprehend what just came out of Austin's mouth but he still kept his cool.

He knew that if not for the fact that he was avoiding certain things. George wouldn't have apologized. No matter what wanted to happen.

"I don't understand what you mean, Austin. If I'm right, I clearly said I was sorry for accusing you wrong," George said after thinking about the best reply to give Austin.

Austin raised up his shoulder, displaying all his pride. George shook his head and in his mind, his hatred grew more for Austin. If not for the lie Austin grandmother told, Austin would have been a dead meet.

"Of course, you are a dummy. What was I expecting? Now, I should teach you how to apologize," Austin scoffed. He whistled out, disturbing the place even more.

"As far as I'm concerned, Austin. I have apologized to you. You either take it or you leave it!" George raised his voice a little and for some seconds, there was silence.

Everyone was shocked that George raised his voice for a member in the family. People he was not up to. Austin walked up to him in a calm manner. As if he wanted to get something behind him.

While he walked past him, George just kept to himself. He was thinking about the kind of apology that Austin wanted. He knew Austin was never satisfied with teasing and mocking him. Because of him, his sister who was my wife was not exempted from it.

While he was lost in his thoughts, a loud slap landed on George's face. Everyone giggled by the sight of it. No one expected Austin to do that type of thing. Anna wasn't left out. She was pissed by it but kept her cool.

He was a man. He thought to himself. He couldn't cry because of something his fellow man did to him. But his body was boiling. His eyes were shaking and his face became hot.

"That serves him right. I can't believe he doesn't still have respect for the members of this family," the old lady supported Austin.

"I will always do everything to put him in his place. Everyone knows that I don't tolerate rags like this," Austin pointed at George.

Madam Patricia faced everyone and because of the authority she possesses, everyone keeps mute. They all wanted to hear what she had to say. Austin's mind began to wander around.

He was having a strange feeling that overwhelmed him. What if she doesn't like the way he was maltreating George? Perhaps, she wanted to tell everyone she lied to save his head.

"No, no, she can't do that," he assured himself and maintained his calm.

"George," madam Patricia called out and George walked up to her but she held up her hand, stopping him wherever he was.

"Stop there. I do not need you to come close," she said to him and he obeyed instantly. It is quite easy to get on Madam Patricia's side but the other family members won't let that happen to George.

They had sworn to frustrate his life and this was just the beginning.

"Okay ma'am," he said, bowing slightly. Madam Patricia touched her gold necklace as the light from the chandelier was reflecting on it.

The gold necklace was quite expensive. A gift from a friend overseas and she does not joke with it.

"You attended my birthday party to cause commotion. Why is apologizing to the house and to my grandson a problem for you?" she asked him and George's eyes widened. He was quite surprised by what he just heard.

"I apologized to Austin and…"

"And he didn't accept your apology. Didn't he?" she chipped in and George nodded. "So, what is stopping you from doing it again? What is stopping you from apologizing again?"

George glanced at his wife who urged him to do that for the sake of peace. Everyone was watching him. They all wanted to know if he was going to disobey madam Patricia.

"I…," he said and paused. He swallowed his saliva down his throat to lubricate it. This was not something he wanted.

"I'm sorry to everyone in the house and to Austin, I apologize for lying that you got a fake vase," he tended to apologize. These words were so painful to say.

He decided to apologize again in order for the matter not to escalate because if it happens to escalate, he would be blamed by Anna's father, Sir Matt who doesn't joke with ma'am Patricia.

Sir Matt's deadly eyes had been on George for a while. He was like a snake waiting for the perfect time to strike.

"Not accepted," Austin answered, shocking George once again. George didn't know why he didn't see this coming. This was crazy but no one could say a thing about it.

"I won't accept that apology, George! You need to apologize to me in the way it pleases me."

"Don't you think you are taking this too far, grandson?" Madam Patricia asked him. She was bothered at the length at which Austin was taking this to. This was the second time George was apologizing to him.

"No grandma. This was an insult to me. I won't take it lightly," he answered her calmly.

"Just do as he says, George," she advised George and left the matter in Austin's hands.

"How much more do you want me to apologize? Do you want my head instead?" George asked, still showing some amount of boldness.

"I could do that if you want. Besides, I want you to lay flat on the floor and apologize to me," he demanded from George and George chuckled.

"I can't do that," George plainly said. This was too low for him to do. No matter what it's been, he still couldn't see himself doing that.

"I'm sure you want to leave here with your head off your body," Austin blasted at him.

"Just do as he says. You don't want to die. Do you?" Madam Patricia pushed further. She was already tired of all these but she didn't show it.

"I'm sorry but I can't," George said and turned his back on Austin. He was about to go to where his wife was seated when he tripped and fell face flat. His face hit the floor and his head felt it.

"Aren't you lying on the floor now?" Austin asked while enjoying the show.

George squeezed his face and raised up his head. It was then he noticed that a family member's leg was set across the road he was to pass.

"You are permitted to leave now!" Madam Patricia ordered and he did as he was told without looking back or making any remark.

Sir Matt arrived immediately George Melmer left and learnt of everything. They narrated the ordeal to him and he could not keep his cool.

"For goodness sake! You allowed that pig to do this? I am quite disappointed. You would have thought him a lesson," he roared like an angry lion and the house was quiet.

He became furious, pacing up and down the room in the house. He removed his suit and flung it on a couch. He wished that George hadn't left before he came. He would have dealt with him severely.

"Absolute nonsense!" He blurted out.

"And you," he turned to Anna who shivered when he pointed at her. She was still present at the party and now it was her turn to get fired by his words.

"You are the wife of a poor rat. Your husband is a loser and should die. He is comfortable in his mess and so are you," he called them names and also insulted her husband in his absence.

The moon was visible in the sky and Anna was moody and furious throughout the night.

"You have been the source of my pain, George. Tell me, are you not tired of causing me so much pain?" she asked him, almost breaking down into tears.

George maintained the silence but Anna punched him so hard so he could answer her.

"Why weren't you sure of what you were saying? Why did you have to do that?"

"Listen to me, Anna. I was right about the vase!" he maintained his stance but Anna never believed.
