Chapter 12
A group of the SGO guys were laughing like maniacs, they had surrounded a bunch of people in ragged clothing, survivors, were screaming. As for why they were screaming, well, one of the SGO guys was using a knife to slowly carve off flesh from one of the survivors who was wailing like a pig about to be slaughtered. At that juncture, one of the survivors tried to run, however, an SGO suddenly stepped in front of him and held him by the neck. And before the poor guy could struggle, his neck was snapped.Andrew slowly retreated and took a deep, but silent breath to calm himself down. He couldn’t let his emotions get the best of him, especially now. With resolve in his eyes, he marched back to the camp.Philip took a moment to digest the information that was given to him. From what the guy said, there was a faction called the New World, and it was filled with people like him, called ‘Special Grade Infected’. Individuals who the G-virus and their genetic makeup managed to perfectly synchronize, thereby creating a superhuman instead of a monster. So that’s why I’m like this. Philip realized.Other than that, the leader of the New World, a powerful Special Grade named Boris, was recruiting as many Special Grades as possible as he believed them to be the new and improved humans. Hence, he wanted to create a sort of utopia for them.Philip thought it sounded insane, but he reserved his comments to himself.“By the way. You said you guys are a faction. Does that mean there are other factions other than yours? Possibly, ones that oppose you?” When Philip said that, the amiable guy’s face changed for an instant, but he caught the change.“You don’t need to know that. For now, you have to rest and recuperate.” He said, and Philip suddenly smiled.“Actually, I think I’ve rested more than enough.” And then before any of the two guys could say anything, they suddenly froze in Philip’s point of view.He got up, and walked to the first one before giving the back of his neck a karate chop and did the same to the second one. When he returned his perception back to normal, both their bodies went rigid and their eyes rolled back before they both lost consciousness.Philip didn’t dwell on this and went to the door of the vehicle and opened a crack. He saw numerous other vehicles and tents with people moving around. He ignored this and looked for a bit before spotting Andrew walking towards a pickup truck with Dina and another person inside.Philip looked back at the unconscious guards and quickly scurried their guns and strapped them over his shoulders before taking a breath. Here goes. When Andrew returned to the truck, he ignored the glare of his guard and sat next to Dina. She looked at him out of the corner of her eye and he made a near imperceptible gesture towards the vehicle that Philip was in.Dina’s pupils shrunk, but she didn’t do anything that could have blown their cover, thank the universe. Now, Andrew was in a tight spot. He knew their captors were terrible people, but how was he meant to get Philip out of here when he as well as Philip were being closely watched? He had no idea how long they had before they were disposed of, and he would be a fool if he thought he could take them on.Dammit, what am I supposed to do?! He screamed inwardly. No amount of military training could help in this situation. He was just about to say something when his world suddenly spun and he felt like he was moving at a million miles per hour.He didn’t even realize when he was standing upright with Dina next to him. He caught a brief glance of Philip who disappeared and reappeared a moment later with a large duffel bag.“Well, they are definitely going to be pissed.” Philip chuckled and looked at the siblings.“What just…?” Andrew came to his senses first and said in confusion.“Oh, the idiots fed me and gave me my strength back. So I took the two of you out of there with some supplies and weapons.” Philip pointed at the duffel bag.At that moment, shouts could be heard in the distance.“That’s our cue to leave.” Philip said and tossed Andrew an assault rifle which he caught deftly. He handed Dina a pistol and he held up a combat knife looking somewhat regretful.“It’s not as good as the katana, but I guess it’ll suffice.” He sighed and before saying.“You two risked your lives to save mine, so I guess our relationship is no longer at suspicious ally level. Anyway, let’s go. They don’t know what direction I went, and I don’t want to be here when they do.” Philip casually hoisted the heavy duffel bag over his shoulder and smiled at the siblings before taking point. The duo looked at each other, clearly flabbergasted. However, it was still night time and very dangerous, so they forcefully ignored their shock and followed Philip.“WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY GOT AWAY?!?” Kaiser roared in the command tent towards the three incompetent guards he’d assigned over their three captives.“We’re sorry sir. We had no idea he’d be so fast that we couldn’t even react to him knocking us out.” The lanky individual said with a trembling voice, his head down.“And you expect me to believe that!? You two are capable special grades and you couldn’t even react to the speed of one person?” Kaiser shouted again and smacked his palm on the arm of his chair causing in to break.“It’s true sir. That’s how those two got away from me. I wasn’t even able to react before they suddenly disappeared from my front.” The guy who had been watching the siblings said and Kaiser glared at him and he feared he might lose his head.“I see.” Kaiser suddenly blew out a breath and leaned back into his chair.“It seems like this Philip guy is much more special than we had originally thought. Fine, the three of you return to your posts.” Kaiser said dismissively and the three nearly failed to hold back their sighs of relief. When they left the tent, Kaiser looked up. A look of intrigue on his face.“Philip huh? Alright, you’ve piqued my interest.” Then he grinned slightly.“If I can recruit him, then boss will be very happy.”Phillip and the siblings ran for a few miles into the forest surrounding the city. Hopefully, they could lose the pursuing guards that way. They were running deeper into the forest now, but the footsteps coming after them just wouldn’t seem to stop.Dina was already getting tired, her breathing became more intense with every few steps they took. “These guys don’t seem like the type to forgive and forget.” Phillip said, trying to add some humor to the situation. But from the tired looks he got from Dina and Andrew, it did the opposite of its intended purpose.“Hey, can’t you just do what you did before? Like carry us and run really far?” Andrew asked him In between breaths.“Well, it’s not impossible. But the last time I did that I used about half my energy. I don’t think I’m good enough to travel that fast with people yet.” Phillip said while dodging a fallen tree.“If I was to do it again I would probably lose consciousness, and I don’t think it’s worth the risk. I might pass out an
Andrew and Dina had gotten a decent distance away from the confrontation between Phillip and the guards. All he could do was have faith that Phillip would get out of there unscathed. To that end, he put his focus on Dina.He sat her down and helped her rest her back on a fallen log nearby. He put his hand on her forehead and she was burning up. She had a fever. There was no worse time for something like this to happen. However, he couldn’t blame her. They weren’t getting enough sleep, rest or food. Always running and fighting. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. He went over to check the duffel bag that Phillip had taken from the camp when they were escaping. “Please let something be in here.” He muttered to himself as he rummaged through the bag.Eventually, he picked up a white bottle containing something he couldn’t properly see. Suddenly he saw a burst of fire come from where they left Phillip. He was startled but quickly looked back at the bottle.Th
Chapter 15Andrew looked at the two little boys with a dumbfounded look on his face. No wonder Philip said it was safe. Both boys seemed no older than ten and both were dark in complexion and looked a little thin. The moment Andrew and Philip came through the door, they huddled close together near Dina who laid on an old couch.“Hey you two, it’s me.” Philip smiled and held up his hands with a harmless smile causing the two boys to drop their guards slightly.“I- is this your friend sir?” The younger of the boys stuttered at it and Philip nodded.“That’s right. You don’t mind us staying, right?” Philip asked and Andrew looked at him through the corner of his eye.‘You ask that when we’ve already come in here?’ However, his thoughts were interrupted when a soft moan escaped Dina’s lips and she squirmed on the couch.Andrew immediately rushed to her side and touched her forehead before pulling his hand back quickly.“Geez, she’s burning up.” He said with worry.“We need something to coo
Chapter 16Philip blinked the sleep out of his eyes when Andrew shook him awake and quickly got his bearings. He was surprised by the fact that he still needed sleep despite his superhuman status. Then again he still needed to eat, so maybe it wasn’t so surprising. He sat in a chair as Andrew went to sleep.‘Hm I haven’t really thought about how my ability actually works honestly.’ He thought. He had this thought because of the SGO guy he fought earlier. He found it odd. He believed that those like him, special grades, only received an overall physical enhancement when they got infected, and then a certain category would receive the best enhancement, like his speed. However, seeing the guy lob fireballs at him immediately changed his mindset. Clearly, the G-virus didn’t just affect physical traits.‘Or does it?’ Philip leaned in his chair.‘I doubt it’s magic. Most likely, his body was secreting a sort of flammable liquid and he could somehow ignite it when it came out. I would be sur
Chapter 17Philip couldn’t help but curse at their luck. Couldn’t they catch a break?!At his shout, Andrew swerved again and the car avoided having its tire blown out.‘If I don’t do anything about those guys then this truck will get wrecked soon.’ Philip analyzed grimly.“Can you do something about those guys!?” Andrew yelled.“I’m thinking about it!” He yelled back and told him to move again. Immediately he did that, he pushed open the door and time slowed.Philip looked at the armored vehicles and immediately dismissed the thought of running into them. He was superhuman sure, but running straight into a man armored vehicle at Mach speeds was suicide. So instead, he picked up a large rock and carried it to the first car where the guy that had been shooting them was looking through a hole in the top of the car with an assault rifle in his hands.Philip put the rock in the wheel well of the car, and then he repeated the process with the other cars behind it before going back into the
Chapter 18‘I wonder how the rest of the world is doing right now.’ Philip wondered as he sat on the front porch of the house they stayed in. They decided to let Dina get some more rest before they set out.‘Was this how it was for those broken down cities as well? One moment, everyone is living their lives and minding their business, and the next monsters from out of someone’s nightmares spawn and destroy everything around them.‘And then there’s me.’ Philip sighed and looked at his hands. It was just so surreal. If Philip were to complement himself, he’d say that he was just fairly smart and average in everything else. He never really thought he’d amount to much in the future. That’s why when he found out of Valerie’s betrayal, while the pain cut so deep that he contemplated suicide for a moment, he honestly wasn’t too surprised. And yet here he was, being able to move at insane speeds. Was it really a surprise that he felt this way. It had only been a bit more than a month since he
Philip went to go and inspect the infected's body. When he got close to it, it was already charred and gave off an awful smell. "Why did it suddenly catch fire?" He then looked around and saw the rod he used, or what was left of it anyway. It had become deformed and was still red hot. It was at that point that Philip realized what happened. 'The friction of the rod against the air caused it to heat up uncontrollably and the heat was transferred to the infected when it hit. That's why it caught on fire.' He rubbed his chin with a small smile. 'I don't know why that doesn't apply to me or those two when I carry them. But this opens a lot more possibilities when fighting. By the time he finished his musings, Andrew pulled up next to him with the truck. "What was that?" Andrew said and pointed at the charred corpse of the infected. Philip noticed Dina closing the eyes of the siblings, heavens bless her. "I'm not too sure myself, but if I'm thinking right, then fighting should becom
Philip marched through the graveyard behind the church. From his eyes, everything appeared frozen as if someone had hit one big pause button, and he was the only one that could move. Usually, Philip marvelled at this effect. But right now, he was just pissed. He was staring down at a large bundle of vines. Well, his original thought was that they were vines, but upon closer inspection, he realized they were thick, fleshy tendrils. Even while pissed, the thought gave him chills. Even then, he followed the things with resolve. At some point, he reached a large tomb. The 'vines' went in there, and they were noticeably thicker. This had to be it. For a moment, a small part, a part Philip wasn't proud of, said that he should just leave them, that they had been slowing him down since they had met, and they were just burdens. That part of him was right, and he knew it. But the bigger part of him, the human part of him said that he would go in there, kill whatever eldritch horror awaited
Xander was in a bind, the cabin they had struggled so much to get to was right in front of them but instead of relief, he felt tension. The people there numbered about ten or so, it wouldn’t be wise to confront them head-on.Furthermore, he did not want to approach them either. After what he had experienced with Mark and Adrian, he did not want to give anybody the benefit of the doubt. He could still remember the look on his face when he tried to choke the life out of him. He had gotten wiser in the last twenty-four hours believe it or not.He concluded that the best he could do was simply try to get enough cans of food before the others entered into the cabin. Funnily enough, they seemeddisagreeing. An older man with patches of grey hair seemed to be telling them not to forcefully enter, while a slightly younger man, probably middle-aged was raging for them to break the door down. This however was not a time for him to gawk and stare. It was a time for him to act! “Hailey, stay here
"Life can be annoying honestly," Andrew said as he looked through the window at the harsh downpour of the rain. When the group thought that they could move for a few more hours until sunset, it suddenly began to rain heavily. Enough to force them to seek shelter.Hence, they quickly found a gas station and decided to hunker down there. On the bright side though, there were some old comics they could use to entertain the kids. And a toilet, so they didn't have to ease themselves in the open as they had been doing since."With how hard the rain is falling, we might be leaving here by noon tomorrow. Just our luck." Andrew lamented. But who could blame him? They were trying so hard to cut their travel time and arrive at the settlement, and yet they just kept facing setback after setback."Fretting over it won't change anything. It's unfortunate but that's just how it is. The only thing we can do now is take it the best we can and keep moving." Philip said, however, Andrew raised a brow.W
“Do not even Think about stopping until I say so!” Andrew barked at the troops who were visibly tired while running laps.Their bodies seemed to ache and their chests heaved with each breath they took in. Andrew watched their progress with a whistle around his neck and arms folded across his chest.Ever since he became Captain, he had completely turned around the training regime of the force. They were now more effective and able to handle more difficult situations, thanks to Andrew’s guidance. He continued to watch over their progress when he heard the sound of a vehicle drive onto the training ground. He turned around and saw one of Greysons aides alight from the vehicle and walk up to him.“Captain Andrew, I have been instructed to take you to Mr Greyson immediately. He said there is something you must need to know.” She said.Andrew looked at the troops who were running behind him, of course they prayed internally that he would leave so that they could get a chance to rest after
In the blink of an eye Phillip was already at the front lines where the soldiers were assembling themselves and putting on their gear. They were spooked when he suddenly appeared out of seemingly thin air. “Who’s in command here?” Phillip asked the slightly frightened group in front of him.“Well based on what’s just happened wouldn’t that be you sir?” A voice said sarcastically from behind, generating a slight chuckle from all the members behind him.He was an average heighted man with well built muscles, a full face beard and ebony black skin and a shiny bald head to top it off.Phillip asked that question to know the hierarchy of the group and who’s responsible for what. “That’s very funny, however I don’t know if you are all aware but that alarm means there’s a swarm of infected rushing towards this base, correct?” He asked while turning his gaze to all of them who were staring at him.“Yes we know, we also know we don’t need one of those freaks to tell us how to do a job we’ve b
Phillip and Andrew leave the room in silence, walking side by side. They were still trying to comprehend what they had just heard.Even Phillip who was the first to be informed still had a hard time believing it. Turning people into infected for personal gains was something he never thought he would discover. However that was the reality, and all they could do was stop it from happening. “When do you want us to leave?” Andrew asked, bringing Phillip back to reality.“I was thinking tomorrow, any later than that and it would be unnecessary. We do not exactly have that much time to waste, especially considering we do not even know if the boy is still wandering the streets by himself.” Phillip responded.“What about Dina? Has she been informed about what is going on?” Andrew asked once again.Phillip shook his head, they had not mentioned anything to her yet as he did not see it as that important. But now that he thought about it, he would need her help since they were dealing with a chi
In the blink of an eye, a whole week had passed. The group was getting more and more accustomed to their new residence and life in the settlement. It was weird since they were so used to finding an infected at least once or twice in a day, so returning back to a somewhat normal life was a little foreign. However, they did still adapt to their new lifestyle quickly. So when they were confident, they all finally decided to look for something to do.Also, Frank hadn't stopped collecting blood from Philip, and according to the bags under his eyes and the excited expression he had on his face each time he invited Philip to his lab, Philip judged that his blood was indeed helping. He had tried to watch Frank work but gave up almost immediately as he failed to understand anything he was doing. On the other hand, Andrew and Dina had been socializing with the other survivors in the settlement. Most of them were pretty hospitable and had no problem in getting acquainted with the duo. There was
CHAPTER 30Phillip and his crew walked closely together as they passed through the makeshift wooden gates which led them into the settlement. They tried to observe as much as they could while passing through, especially exits should they need to escape from the place for any reason. The walls were made from timber and reinforced by rows of lamp posts, despite the fact that the infection spread less than two months ago the measures they had taken to protect themselves were very impressive. And unlike his earlier assumptions, the walls actually spanned about 3 kilometers across all four sides of the settlement. Every 50 meters or so there was a watch tower with people with guns at the top.Upon closer inspection, some parts of the walls were covered in graffiti. Names of departed, days In captivity and other random yet strange things were painted on the walls.“Follow me.” Alice said as she turned and passed through what was formerly a commercial district but had now become a makeshift
“The primaries aren’t looking too good Mr Greyson.” His secretary said after making his presentation on the projector in Greysons office. He was holding some documents and graphs from the last primaries that had just been held concerning his rerun election. He was pursuing a second term in office as the next round of elections was coming up.“Just what could the problem be Chris? I kept all the promises I made during my campaigns, so just why are the polls so negative.” Greyson said as he leaned back in his chair and put his palms on his face.Chris could only look at his boss with a bit of sympathy. Ever since the introduction of the G-Virus which still couldn’t be explained, his competitors had begun to take advantage of the situation. Making promises such as protecting those who voted for them from the virus.Although it was a deplorable tactic, it seemed to be working. Greysons main competitor, Judas Layton was the embodiment of power hungry. He had always been guilty of making f
Frank opened the door and at the entrance stood two guards with masks standing at attention. They both saluted when they saw Frankwho acknowledged them before returning to their natural positions.“This was please.” Frank said as he gestured in front of him and took charge. As they walked, Phillip couldn’t help but notice the other scientists that occupied the makeshift laboratory. The building seemed to be an old building which they had converted quite nicely into a suitable laboratory. There were at least a dozen people in there with their own secluded workspaces and tables set up with various gadgets and equipment.Lights flashed, equipment beeped and notes were taken as they studied the various tasks that were in front of them. He caught a glimpse of some fascinated faces when he was making his way past some of their desks. He could see their curiosity visible written across their faces as he walked by. ‘What a specimen!’ Some of their faces screamed as they walked further into th
