The elevator doors opened when it reached the first floor. Jack stepped out after observing the happiness of the guests upstairs. He walked slowly, sat in a simple chair reserved for him, right at the edge of the room, without a table.
Jack smiled contentedly as he noticed the staff treating the guests very well, even though their appearance was clearly different from the usual guests at the restaurant.
"Would you like to sample our dishes, Sir? We would be happy to prepare it for you," a woman's voice surprised Jack. It wasn't a server; it was the restaurant manager herself.
Jack smiled. "Maybe a cup of coffee."
Mrs. Sisca called for a waiter, asking for authentic civet coffee to be made. She asked again, "Is there anything else, Sir? I apologize that the VVIP membership didn’t exist before; for now, only the VIP room is available. But don't worry, the dishes and service we offer are certainly more special than what the VIP members usually receive."
In fact, Mrs. Sisca was a bit confused about how to serve Jack. As the only VVIP member, the young man had chosen the worst seat in the restaurant, with no table. After all, Jack was entitled to the best of everything at SweetSky.
"No, I'm full."
This time, Mrs. Sisca’s eyes widened, and for a moment, she couldn’t contain her surprise. It was the first time she had seen someone like Jack, coming to SweetSky with many guests, yet not intending to eat there.
"Make sure my guests receive the best," Jack said.
"Of course, Sir," Mrs. Sisca bowed respectfully. "I will check the gifts you provided for the guests. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to let the waiter know. It’s a pleasure to serve you." She backed away, not wanting to disturb him.
Jack nodded. Moments later, a waiter brought him a cup of premium civet coffee. He inhaled the aroma of the coffee rising with the thin smoke before taking a sip.
[Sir, she has arrived.]
The System's voice startled Jack. "Who?"
[Your potential girlfriend, Emma.]
Jack choked and coughed, bowing his head.
The waiter who had delivered the coffee sighed in disappointment. He had to forgo his wages for two weeks just to enjoy a cup of civet coffee, but now half of it had been spilled on the floor.
Someone reached for Jack's cup of coffee. When Jack looked up, his body seemed to freeze. In front of him stood a young woman smiling gently, holding out a bottle of mineral water.
Jack stood still for a while, gazing at the woman's face. It felt as if the wind was brushing against his face, bringing a sense of peace he had longed for.
[You are mesmerized, Sir!]
Jack snapped back to reality. The System's brief statement caused his face to flush slightly.
"Thank you," he said, accepting the water she offered.
The young woman asked for a chair to be placed beside Jack. Then she sat down and asked, "Did you come here alone?" She glanced to the left and right.
"Yes." Jack replied shortly. His face was still nervous.
"I came with them." The woman pointed to a group. An elderly woman was chatting with a few children.
"If you want, you can join us. I’m grateful that a philanthropist made it possible for people like us to be here. Before, not even the thought of eating, let alone entering this restaurant, ever crossed my mind. Even though it's just for one night, this will be an unforgettable gift for them."
[Blink, Sir. Your eyes can dry out.]
Jack immediately turned his face away, hiding a small smile, realizing he had been staring at the woman beside him without blinking.
"Why? Did I say something wrong?" she asked.
"No, no. I just... um, I think I should thank that philanthropist. Because of him, I can experience the warmth and joy of tonight," Jack said, speaking more about himself.
The woman smiled widely, showing her neat and clean set of teeth. "You're right. I don't know who he is. If I ever meet him, I should at least give him a hug to thank him."
Jack tried to hide his pleased smile.
"Hey, we’ve been talking for a while, but I don’t know your name yet!"
Undoubtedly, the joyful expression on the woman’s face made Jack even more captivated.
"I’m Jack."
"Hi Jack, my name is—"
"Emma," Jack said spontaneously, unknowingly cutting her off.
Emma eagerly asked, "How did you know my name?"
'Damn!' Jack thought, gritting his teeth.
However, Emma’s question validated the information the System had previously provided him. Jack's eyes shifted to the left and right, searching for the right words to say.
"Um, you said it earlier." Jack winced.
"Really?" Emma furrowed her brow. "Why don’t I remember? Hmm, maybe I’m starting to lose my memory." She chuckled softly.
"Alright, Jack, come to our table if you want, don’t be shy. It’s been nice talking to you."
Emma paused for a moment before smiling and saying, "I don’t know why, but even though this is our first meeting, I feel like I’ve known you."
Emma returned Jack’s coffee and then moved to the table where her foster family was sitting. She briefly turned back and flashed a smile at Jack.
[Quick, stand up and follow her, Sir.]
"No."
[Why is that, Sir?] The System’s voice sounded protestant.
Jack finished his coffee, leaving only the dregs. After exhaling, he replied, "I don’t want to disturb the warmth of that family. You know, sometimes it’s wiser to keep a distance than to let our selfishness mar the beauty of the moment."
Jack smiled, knowing the System didn’t argue with him.
By the time the dinner event was over, and the guests left the restaurant with gifts from Jack, no one knew that Jack was the ‘Philanthropist’ they had been talking about throughout the event.
Jack had intentionally hidden this, even from the staff. The only people who knew were the restaurant’s top officials, including the manager.
Now, Jack walked happily toward his old scooter. He refused, even forbade, the restaurant manager or any of the restaurant staff from escorting him to the parking lot.
However, when Jack’s eyes scanned the parking lot to find his scooter, something strange suddenly happened!
"Why is my vision blurry?"
He was sure everything had been clear earlier. It seemed impossible for his glasses to suddenly get dirty, as he hadn’t walked through any dusty paths. Nevertheless, Jack took off his glasses to clean them.
In his mind, he suspected that his astigmatism might have worsened, causing the lenses he was using now to no longer help his vision.
After wiping them with his shirt, Jack realized something. He put his glasses back on.
Jack froze!
He took off his glasses and put them back on again to make sure.
"It’s impossible," he whispered in disbelief.
Jack stared at the glasses he had been wearing for years. He had replaced the lenses several times to correct his vision. Before this, he had suffered from severe astigmatism, nearly 3.00 diopters. It had clearly disrupted his activities when he wasn’t wearing glasses. But now, the opposite was happening.
"Why can I see so clearly without my glasses?"
