CHAPTER 216

Nathan had barely finished speaking to Vanessa when the sound of small footsteps rapidly approached them.

“Nathan! My hero!” Brian’s excited voice rang out as he came bolting out of the house.

Nathan turned around and crouched just in time to catch the boy in his arms. “Brian!” he exclaimed, lifting him effortlessly.

Brian beamed at him, his face glowing with admiration. “I saw you on TV! You stopped the bad man! You’re the best hero ever!”

Nathan chuckled, his lips curving into a warm smile.

“You’re like a real superhero! You saved everyone!”

Nathan’s chest tightened at the boy’s words, but before he could respond, Grace’s voice followed swiftly behind.

“Brian!” she called, rushing out of the house. She was slightly out of breath, a dish towel clutched in one hand. “What have I told you about running outside like that? You could have tripped!”

Brian clung to Nathan’s shoulder, giggling. “I was just so excited, Mom!”
