Chapter 4

"Come on, princess, the clock is ticking. Chop-chop!" Linda mocked, exchanging glances with her accomplice Zara.

The two always found it amusing to taunt Dominic. He consistently overlooked their attempts and focused on his work, and today wasn't an exception. However, he had made up his mind.

"I wonder how he manages to work so hard. Rumor has it, he's his wife's puppet." Zara said silently but loud enough for Dominic to hear. This wasn't his problem; he had learned how to ignore them.

They were still unaware that he had divorced his wife, so they still mock him for always pleasing his wife.

Although their words still hurt, he wasn't ready for it to deter him. He had made up his mind to move on, and he continued to pack his belongings. He was ready to call it quits. He had worked hard to serve this company and also put in extra effort to please his wife. That was all the aim of coming to Kester city and since his wife left him, he wasn’t ready to keep up with it.

“What's with the gloomy acts? You need to wash up the dishes. I won't be joining you today. I'm stressed out,” Linda yelled at Dominic.

"The little princess is tired. You know you need this job to keep your woman. No woman wants to live with a wreck like you." Linda mocked further.

Dominic sighed, still not giving them a reply or the attention they obviously sought. He turned toward his locker to continue what he was doing when the voice of Selena blasted through the intercom: “Dominic, over here now! Urgent!”

Dominic abandoned what he was doing. Selena, the president of Alexiou's Enterprise, a company she inherited from her father, had called him. He wondered about the reason for her summons. He immediately left his current task, recalling he had been to her office once or twice, and was sure she could see him from the CCTV footage in her office.

He made his way to her office but had a feeling he was forgetting something behind. His mind immediately reminded him, and he ran to his drawer to retrieve the white envelope that contained his resignation letter. This was the time to tender his resignation letter.

“Yes, come in,” the vibrant voice of Selena cut through from inside. Dominic stepped in and was impressed by how hard Selena had worked to build Alexiou Enterprise so far, following her father's decision to make her the president.

“Dominic here, ma'am, you sent for me,” Dominic politely introduced himself. “Oh yeah, ehhm... Dominic, please sit,” she said, smiling at him.

Dominic wondered why she had requested him. He tried thinking about the possible reasons and hoped it wasn't another ploy to remind him of his folly.

“Mr. Dominic, here. I will go straight to the point,” she said, handing him an envelope. Dominic was perplexed; he wasn't sure what was in it. He silently collected the envelope as his gaze met a smiling face of Selena.

“Go ahead, open it. It's good news.” She kept smiling, which made Dominic anxious about what was written in it. He opened the letter and read through it in a rush.

"He has just been promoted to the rank of a manager," Dominic read with an indifferent expression. This should have been good news some days back. Dominic sighed and handed over his envelope to Selena, who was expecting him to be happy.

Selena silently opened and read through the resignation letter. She was taken aback.

“I appreciate it, but I already made up my mind,” Dominic said. Selena tried to read his expression but found it difficult. Who would resign after just being promoted?

"I've noticed your hard work lately. I saw you at Max restaurant three weeks back." Selena managed to say.

Dominic abruptly looked at her. She nodded and continued, "I was impressed at how hard you work. I understand what we pay you here is not enough, so you took up extra jobs.”

"This is for my freedom. I really appreciate the offer, but I've made up my mind." Dominic said, hoping she would understand. Selena nodded with a disappointed smile. "Dominic, I understand your fr—" She paused and watched her phone screen.

"Excuse me, please." she said to Dominic while she picked up the call that interrupted their conversation.

Dominic watched her, his admiration for her increased. He felt sad he wasn't working with her anymore. He had made up his mind to return to Victoria's. He smiled as he remembered the taste of blood in his mouth. Staying in Kester City had really made him weak; he was the god of fire.

The surge of energy vibrated through his body again but was jolted out of his thoughts by Selena's yell.

Her countenance suddenly turned ugly. "How ridiculous of you! I can't marry you." Selena barked at the caller from her end. Dominic looked at her with confusion, furrowing his brows.

“Eight million dollars!... Give me time; I will pay it off. You can't be serious.. twenty-four hours?...” Selena yelled again. The caller was obviously threatening her. Selena didn't like the news; Arthur was proposing to marry her to save her company from bankruptcy. Selena has always ignore his advances, and he has always threatened her and bullied her to save her company by marring him.

Dominic stood up; he shouldn't be listening to the conversation. He thought it to be rude of him, so he polietly left.

Dominic walked into a scene he was not prepared for. He saw Diana playing the victim card and his colleagues taking the bait and insulting him.

“You don’t mean it; he went that far, to hire an actress to flaunt some fake card and luxurious car,” Zara's voice echoed with so much contempt.

“The humiliation was much, even after he divorced me,” Dominic heard the familiar voice of Diana. He just walked past them; he wasn't in the mood.

“Hey dude, I never knew you could go this far to treat a beautiful woman like this; you're such a jerk,” Clark said to Dominic.

“He's certainly a loser and doesn't deserve her.” James said to support him

Diana was happy to win their sympathy. They had attacked her for allowing her husband to work in a restaurant to wash dishes, but she had played the victim and accused Dominic of divorcing her and humiliating her.

Selena came out to the drama, already angry after hearing all the harsh words they had spoken to Dominic. “This is unacceptable in a corporate environment,” Selena yelled sternly upon her presence.

They were all shocked as everyone rushed back to their tables. “Is this what you're all paid for? Gossip?” Selena aired her frustration.

She was already irritated enough for today and needed to teach them a lesson. “Y'all are idle, and I will teach y'all a lesson. This behavior is unacceptable. I'm deducting the wages of those involved in today's ridicule. Learn to conduct yourselves professionally,” Selena said as she stormed out on them.

They knew what it meant. Selena was strict, and none of them could appeal her decision. It was certain, and they were all angry. “Hey loser, how shameless and despicable of you. So you set us up to get our salary deducted,” Clark ranted, venting his frustration.

Zara sarcastically replied, "Oh, please! If the crying princess can't handle a little workplace banter, maybe she should find a new job in a kindergarten. Your scheming skills are truly commendable, Captain Pathetic."
