Ever since Leonardo had lost his job at his best friend's company where he used to work as a chauffeur, he had become a househelp in his own house. But he never complained.
He was still searching for a job for the past four months and hadn't been successful with finding one. So, naturally, as the ‘jobless’ husband that he had become, Leonardo had no other option but to take care of the house while his wife, Sophie, was away for work.
Today, he had deep cleaned the entire house, fixed the sink in the toilet, washed his wife's cars in the garage and made lunch. His wife's cousin, Emma, had offered to help him but he'd politely turned down her help.
She was a graduating college senior who visited the house whenever she was on the weekends or on long breaks, and Leonardo hated to stress her when she should be having a rest. He was not the time who was inconsiderate of others.
“Hmm. I smell something nice. What's cooking?” Sophie walked into the house, looking tired in her corporate, white and black work outfit.
Leonardo's eyes twinkled with excitement as he saw her walk in and he hurried towards her with spread arms to give her a hug but she brushed past him, leaving his arms hanging wide and open.
Leonardo felt his stomach drop in disappointment but he did not give up. He went after her and hugged her from behind but Sophie did not reciprocate the hug. She kept her body numb and had a bored look on her face.
“Not today, Leo. I'm tired.” She gently disentangled herself from him and plunged her weight upon the sofa in the living room. This time, no matter how much Leonardo tried to conceal his sadness and disappointment, he couldn't.
“Why do you keep running away from me, Sophie? Did I do something wrong?” He asked her, with a look of lost and forlorn.
“You didn't wrong me, Leo. I'm just tired. That's all.” She answered, without sparing him a look but Leonardo did not believe her. He knew there was something wrong with their relationship. He could feel it deep in his heart.
“You've been avoiding body contact with me since the past three months, Sophie. You've starved me of sex and you don't even act like you love me anymore.”
“I don't have time for any of these talks today, Leo.” She reached for her phone and opened her I*******m app to chat with a few friends. “Quit being a whiny husband and go get me something to eat. I'm starving.”
Even though Leonardo was hurt, he managed to put his emotions behind him and headed towards the kitchen to get her some food but he stopped halfway as soon as he was only a few feet away from her. A sudden thought rang through his head and he turned around again to face Sophie, his eyes staring at her inquisitively.
“Where is Ava?”
Sophie raised her gaze to look at him, her eyes bored and uninterested. “What do you mean, where's Ava?”
A frown appeared on Leonardo's forehead at her nonchalant response. “Did you forget to pick her up from school again?”
“Oh, spare me the crap, Leonardo. You cannot possibly expect me to remember to pick her up from school all the damn time. I have work to attend to and…”
“She is your daughter, Sophie!” Leonardo couldn't control his emotions this time and he yelled angrily at her. “Our daughter! You cannot prioritize work over her!”
“Then, get a freaking job if you want me to focus on our daughter!” Sophie yelled back at him, steaming with rage too. “Stop being a lazy, useless ass of a man, and go get yourself a godforsaken job!”
Leonardo paled at Sophie's words and his whole body weakened. Was this what she thought of him? A lazy, useless man?
“I agreed to marry you even though you barely had nothing! You live under my roof, feed under my earnings and drive my car! So, you have no right to control me! Do your job as the servant that you have always been, and stop complaining!”
“Sophie, that is enough.” A female voice came behind them and Leonardo turned his head to see Emma standing behind him with a disappointed look in her eyes as she stared at Sophie. “Don't be so rude and mannerless to your own husband. That is unfair and disrespectful. What would mom say?”
Rolling her eyes and scoffing ridiculously, Sophie picked her handbag from the sofa and stood up. “I see that you've both teamed up against me now. Well, goodluck to you both. Get out of my way, Leo.”
She pushed past Leo, almost causing him to trip, as she headed upstairs. After she was out of sight, Emma walked closer to Leonardo, whose face looked pale and blank. Inside his head was a storm of rage that he battled to keep under control.
Sophie's words had cut him so deep, that he could hardly feel himself again. He wondered when things had gone wrong between them.
They had met in college and even though he was poor and had nothing, she didn't care and had gone ahead to marry him regardless. So, hearing her say things like this, five years later, shattered his heart to pieces.
“Don't take her words to heart.” Emma consoled him. “You know how thoughtless she can be when she's mad.”
“Yea. I know.” Leonardo nodded with a sigh. Even though he was hurting deep and angry at the same time, he offered her a closed mouthed smile. “Thank you for standing up for me, Emma. I'll go fetch Ava at school now.”
“I'll come with you.” Emma offered. “I haven't seen Ava in a while. I'm sure she would be thrilled to see me.”
“Definitely.” Leonardo agreed with a laugh. “Let's get going then.”
“Alright.” Emma walked ahead first and Leonardo turned his head to take a look at the direction that Sophie had left.
He missed his wife badly and would do anything to win her back again. He made a mental note to get her some flowers from the florist on his way back from Ava's school. Maybe that would cheer her up.
He didn't expect to the biggest shock of his life.
“Daddy! Emma!” Ava jumped in joy and ran towards Leonardo as soon as she set eyes on him. “My princess.” Leonardo crocheted low and caught Ava in a hug and laughed wholeheartedly as he did so. He ruffled her hair lightly and played with her cheeks. “Hey, beautiful one.” Emma leaned lower too and opened her hands towards Ava for her own hug. Disentangling herself from Leonardo, Ava hugged Emma too. “I've missed you, Emma.” She whispered into Emma's neck and the latter chuckled lightly. “Why? It's only been a week.” “A week is too long, Emma. Daddy cannot make hot cross buns as good as you can. And mommy doesn't even know how to cook. She cannot carry an egg to save her life.” “Really?” Emma laughed again and Ava nodded her head in response, while laughing too. “Alright then. Once we get home, I'll make you some hot cross buns and bake some cookies too. Would you like that?” “Yay! I would love that!” Ava hugged Emma again in gratitude and after their short hug, the trio headed
Four months ago, when Leonardo used to work at Kevin's company as a chauffeur, he had crashed the car of one of the company's board of directors when he was tasked with driving the man back to his hotel. As expected, the man had burst into fury and demanded that Leonardo fix his car but Leonardo knew he would never be able to raise the huge amount needed to fix the car. He was barely making ends meet with his meager pay. His pay was so little that he was certain he would have to save up all his salaries for an entire year before he would be able to fix the car. Left with no other options, the company had to fire Leonardo as a way of taking responsibility for his action. But even after Leonardo was fired from the company, he was certain of one thing. The car crash wasn't an accident. Someone had tampered with the car and orchestrated the accident to implicate him. But because he had no evidence whatsoever, he couldn't speak up about it and was forced to swallow his suspicions. But
As the dark jeep drove through the driveway of a huge mansion, Leonardo was struck with awe at the sheer size and grandeur of the mansion. There were several cars parked out front, including a Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce and a Porsche. It was clear that this home of immense wealth and luxury was owned by no ordinary man but a multi millionaire. As Leonardo, the dark suited men and the woman alighted from the car, they were joined by a young lady who walked out of the mansion towards them. Her long strawberry blonde hair was curled and flipped to a shoulder and she was wearing an ankle length, silk dress. She had a beautiful smile on her face as she kept her eyes on Leonardo and unexpectedly wrapped her arms around him in a hug. Leonardo's body stiffened and his eyes darted from left to right, in his confused state. The young lady disentangled herself from him again, the smile on her face never unwavering even for a second. “Long time no see, lost brother.”A look of confusion fli
As soon as Leonardo returned back home, he headed straight for the bedroom. Once he reached the door of the bedroom, he pushed it open to see Sophie all dressed and reapplying her makeup, as if nothing ever transpired between them only a moment ago. When she turned her head to face him, Leonardo felt his stomach turn in disgust at her sight. She repelled him so much that he could throw up and he wondered how a woman could be this evil and dark hearted. It irked him to think that he had been married to this woman for five whole years and had endured all her mistreatments, all because of a love that was never there to begin with.“Knock before opening the door. How many times do I have to correct you?” She sighed in frustration and rolled her eyes at him. But Leonardo wasn't here for any of her drama. He was here for something else.“The divorce papers.” He spoke. “Where are the divorce papers?”Fine lines of wrinkles crossed Sophie's face at his question.“And what about them?”“Wher
The next day, Leonardo and Estella drove to the company in a dark BMW car. Once the car stopped, Leonardo felt a strong sense of nostalgia as his eyes took in the sight of the sleek and modern grandiose of the building. The memories of the time he used to come here with his parents filled his head and now, fifteen years later, he still appreciated the contemporary architecture of the company and the air of luxury and sophistication it exhibited. “Seems like you still remember what the company looks like.” Estella smiled at him, impressively. “A little.” He answered while clapping his hands together feeling a little odd from his dressing. “Are you sure about this?” Estella asked him, gesturing to his choice of clothes. At the same time, one of the security guards opened the car door, and Estella and Leonardo exited the car.“Yes, I prefer it this way for a start. You know,” Leonardo insisted on wearing casual clothes on the first day of resumption. He even noticed the disapproving
The security guards bowed to them as they walked into the company building. As they stepped into the large and vast entrance, they were greeted by the staff while they also whispered in awe behind their backs. “Oh my goodness, it's Jayden Romano.” “I thought he was dead.” “He grew up to be so good looking. Goodness!” “Where has he been all these years? I heard he went missing.” “There is a board meeting currently ongoing. We are late.” Estella informed Leonardo and they took the elevator to the top floor, where the meeting was being held. “Are you nervous?” She asked him as they disembarked from the elevator and walked down the hallway. “I mean, it's going to be your first board meeting. It's okay to be nervous.” “Surprisingly, I am not.” He replied to her. “I look forward to the board meeting.” As soon as they set foot into the board meeting, the once lively room suddenly fell silent for a few seconds and everyone in the room eyed Leonardo curiously. “Good day, ladies and
As Leonardo waited patiently in his car, parked in front of Ava's school, he glanced at his wristwatch again. He had been waiting for almost an hour but it was all worth it. He had been a little worried that Sophie might come to pick her up before he did and that was why he had arrived an hour earlier to fetch her himself. Even though it had only been a day, he had missed Ava dearly and couldn't wait to see her and hug her.Just then, he saw the sight of Emma and Ava walking out of the school premises. Leonardo's eyes gleamed with life again and he quickly exited his car and walked over to them. Ava's eyes sparkled upon seeing him and she ran to him, while he picked her up into his arms in a hug. “Dad!”“My princess.” He laughed and pecked her on the head. Then, he stared adorably at her face. She was the cutest thing that he had ever set eyes on and her bright face always made him forget his bad days whenever he looked at them.“Where did you go, daddy? I haven't seen you since ye
Once they were inside the house, Sophie led Leonardo up the staircase and into her room. She shut the door carefully behind them. “What do you want to talk about?” Leonardo asked, glancing at his wristwatch out of habit. He didn't want to be here. The memories of the last time he was in this room, prickled his skin and only made him angry. This was the same room where he was humiliated by a wife he thought was in love with him and a best friend he thought was loyal. “Are you in a hurry?” She batted her long lashes at him and a small flirty smile played on her lips. Leonardo looked away, ignoring her flirtatious acts and keeping his cold looks on. If she thought he was stupid enough to fall for her tricks, then she was dumb. He was no longer the weak and foolish Leonardo that she used to know. “Listen, Sophie. I am not here for long talks. I only agreed to come in and have a conversation with you because you begged me to. I have somewhere really important to be at.” “Somewher
