Selecting a husband

Albert's appearance reminded Elijah of the past that he didn't wish to remember.

Back then, he was called an illegitimate child who was abandoned by his father.

This caused him to be chased out of his home along with his mother who had all her assets confiscated

Afterward, his mother left the capital and brought Elijah to Crystal Falls, where she worked hard to make ends meet, and although life was tough, she managed to raise him into a proper gentleman.

Unfortunately, life seemed to have other plans as she developed a terminal illness in her later years, causing her to be bedridden.

At that time, Elijah had just graduated from college and his paltry income wasn't enough to foot the medical bills.

Swallowing his pride, he sought help from the Augustus family only to be humiliated just like his mother, leaving him hopeless and resentful towards the family.

To save his mother, he'd ended up selling one of his kidneys to raise the money for the surgery but by then, it was already too late as his mother had already passed away, leaving him completely devastated.

He failed to save his mother and because of him, Alice ended up suffering such a cruel fate.

Now, however, things would be different.

Now, he had the power to change his fate, and without a doubt, he would utilize it.

“Elijah, our ride is here,” Thomas announced with Elijah nodding in response.

Together, they entered a multi-purpose vehicle without a license plate, driven by a man wearing a black tank top and baseball cap.

“Captain, the Wesen family will be selecting a husband for Miss Alice today. The head of the family has already stated this matter, and it seems a suitor has also been decided on.”

Elijah frowned as he heard this. “Selecting a husband?”

“Yes sir. The Wesen, though they have fallen off are still considered to be a prestigious family, a part of society referred to as old money. Even though Alice is now regarded as the ugly duckling of the family, no one would refuse an opportunity to join their family, if only to take what they can do to enrich themselves.”

“I see. In that case, let's visit the family.”

“Sir?”

“Take me to the Wesen Villa. Alice can marry but it's not going to be used as a guise to sell her off.” Elijah said with the driver responding.

“Understood.”

At the same time, a system notification appeared in front of Elijah.

[Mission Generated]

[Saving the Damsel in Distress]

[Reward: +10 Spirit Points]

Elijah nodded in satisfaction as he saw this.

The system only ever generated missions based on what he wished to do, providing Elijah appropriate amount of Spirit Points which allowed him to cultivate, growing from the nascent stage to the Expert Stage within ten years.

Soon enough, Elijah arrived at the Wesen Villa.

He didn't hesitate to make his way into the building just in time to catch the conversation happening in the sitting room.

Boisterous laughter echoed as a man remarked. “Mr. Leroy, since you are so sincere about Alice, there's no reason to waste any more time. Let's just settle on a date.”

Elijah paused as he recognized the voice.

It belonged to Olivia who happened to be Alice's mother.

Another person replied. “Madam, you are being too polite. Since I will be joining the family soon, there is no need to be formal; just call me by my name.”

“My oh my, aren't you such a charmer?... Alice is so lucky to find a husband like you considering the way she looks. As her mother, I can rest assured now.”

“Don't worry, as long as she marries me, then I'll make sure to treat her well.”

Even from the outside, Elijah could sense the insincerity in the voice of the man who spoke.

There was no way Olivia didn't notice which meant she didn't care that Alice was being practically sold away.

Unable to control his anger, Elijah knocked on the door.

“Who is it?”

Having settled Alice’s marriage with a wealthy man, Olivia was in a good mood as she opened the door only for her expression to shift as she saw the person on the other end.

There was no way she wouldn't be able to recognize the face of the bastard that destroyed her daughter's life.

“You aren't dead!?” She questioned with a face filled with disgust and disdain.

“Hello, Madam Olivia, is Alice around?” Elijah greeted cordially, unwilling to get into a verbal confrontation with Olivia.

“How dare you speak to me like that?... And you dare to show your face here again?... Didn't your dead mother teach you some sense!?” Olivia bellowed as she glared at Elijah who reacted the moment Olivia brought up his mother.

If not for his morals that stopped him from hitting a woman, he would have taught her a lesson without hesitation.

Noticing his reaction, Olivia sneered. “What?... Do you want to hit me?”

“I'm just here to see Alice, that's all.”

“Well, she doesn't wish to see you so get out. Today is her engagement and I won't have you ruin it for us!”

Just then, Alice's father arrived only to react similarly to Olivia. “Bastard, how dare you show your face here!... Why didn't you die outside!”

Without warning, he tried to attack Elijah but just as his fist was about to make contact, Thomas reacted and grabbed his wrist, restraining him completely.

Elijah had been more than a brother to Thomas for years so how could he stand by and watch him be humiliated by others?

With an icy cold glare, he emitted a murderous aura that frightened both Olivia and her husband so much so that they trembled in response.
