Chapter 5

The next day, Gerald took a taxi and went to the courthouse.

When he got there, he met his ex-wife, and her mother already there waiting for him.

Gerald wanted to pretend like he did not see them and just walk past them but his wife's mother did not allow him.

She immediately walked up to him and before he could say or do anything, she gave him a dirty slap.

Gerald was taken aback by the sudden assault but he did not flinch or act like he felt any pain.

"What was that for?" He asked her coldly.

"You useless thing! How dare you think of caging my daughter!" His wife's mother was accused.

Gerald was stunned but he chose not to answer her but he continued to stare coldly at his ex-wife.

"You dare to keep my daughter from gaining her freedom! You bloody ex-convict!" His wife's mother insulted him.

Gerald was not in the mood to answer his wife's mother because she was not the one he had issues with.

"I went to the hospital!" He informed Fiona.

Fiona looked at him coldly like she did not care what he had to say.

"And so?" She asked him rudely.

"You broke your promise, Fiona! You told me that if I pleaded guilty and went to prison on your behalf you would take care of my mother but you did not!" Gerald's voice was getting high because he was already angry.

Fiona looked at him with disdain and she scoffed.

Gerald was not done with what he had to tell her so he ignored her rudeness and continued talking.

"You stopped her medications and told her that you were going to drive us out of the house! How could you Fiona? How?!" Gerald asked shaking with anger.

Fiona had never seen Gerald this angry and she was scared but she refused to let it show. Instead, she pretended not to be affected by it.

"Your mother is just as gullible as you!" Fiona said. "How did you expect me to limit my life to taking care of your old and sickly mother? You must be mad!"

Gerald balled his hands into a fist and the veins in his neck tightened so that they were turning green and almost popping out.

He was trying very hard to control his anger but Fiona's attitude was not helping.

Fiona noticed that Gerald's anger was increasing and she decided to make it worse so that Gerald would react out of anger and she would use whatever actions he took against him.

"Look here Gerald, you had better sign the divorce agreement and maybe, just maybe, I might pity you and pay the outstanding hospital bills." Fiona volunteered.

Gerald was not stupid so he was able to detect the sarcasm and insult in her statement. It meant that she believed that he was penniless and would suffer when they finally got the divorce.

Gerald smiled ruefully and without saying a word, handed over the divorce agreement that he had already signed to Fiona.

Fiona took a look at the divorce agreement that Gerald had signed and laughed at him.

"You must be a fool to sign it with such haste! You are truly destined to be poor!" Fiona insulted him.

Gerald did not answer her, instead, he ignored her and her mother and went inside the courthouse.

The judge came in and in less than an hour, the divorce was finalized.

As they came out of the courthouse, they were surrounded by the media. They immediately gathered around Fiona and began to ask her about the divorce and her new relationship with Ivan.

"Well, I just got divorced from my ex husband who happened to be an ex convict and I can say that I feel free." Fiona said. "And concerning my new relationship with Ivan, let's just say we are keeping it private from the prying eyes of the public."

The media went wild with a frenzy as they asked Fiona how she had managed to cope with Gerald.

Fiona replied that it had not been easy which was why she was grateful to Ivan who had come to save her.

The media also humiliated Gerald and the crowd booed him.

"What a useless and wicked man." They said.

"How does he expect a beautiful woman like Fiona to ruin her life by being married to an ex convict?"

"He should be ashamed of himself! I bet no one would want to get married to him again." They said.

Gerald heard what the crowd was saying but he refused to pay heed to them. Fiona on the other hand was blushing and feeling on top of the world.

"Did Ivan send his car to come pick you up." The media asked her.

It was then that they noticed the fleet of luxurious cars packed up. Fiona's mother thought it was true so she ran downstairs and got inside the car.

Fiona placed a mocking smile on her face as she turned to Gerald.

"Now this is how a real man behaves." She mocked him and went downstairs.

She entered the car and told the driver to move but he refused.

"Are you deaf? I said driver the car!" Fiona shouted at the driver.

The driver again did not answer her and he did not drive the car.

Fiona became angry and she was about to shout at the driver again when a middle-aged man appeared.

"Both of you should get out of the car now!" He said to them.
