Chapter 4

The next day, Chris Luther successfully opened a bank account. Just as he anticipated, he got credited by an unknown source.

Withdrawing the money, he rented a basement at a slum area paying the weekly price of two hundred dollars.

After completing the daily body fitness task, he began to think about his future.

He knew that with the help of the system, rising to the top was guranteed. But sincerely speaking, he felt that his progress was slow.

A hundred bucks per day although was a large sum, he still wasn't content with it. He had high expectations for the system afterall.

At that moment, his stomach rumbled like the sound of thunder.

"That reminds me. I haven't even eaten breakfast" he gasped slightly.

It was already approaching noon and yet he didn't feel that unbearable pang of hunger he usually felt in the past when the Cortez would overwork him and make him skip meals.

"Prehaps the system fitness quest is at play?" apart from that, he couldn't find another plausable reason.

Jumping up to his feets, he grabbed the hoodie he just bought this morney and left his house, heading for a snack store.

Passing through an alley, he suddenly heard a commotion, causing him to look over.

At a corner, a thuggish looking guy had a small knife placed at the neck of another handsome looking guy who had his back kissing the wall.

"You are really something huh? eyeing my babe" the thuggish fellow gnashed his teeth, not bothering to conceal the rage in his eyes.

"I didn't steal your girl! s-she came to me herself!" the handsome victim yelped with a strained voice.

"Shaddap! today you die!" the thug had the small knife graze a small part of the handsome dude's neck, drawing out a trickle of blood.

"Kill him? isn't that a bit too much my friend?" a voice suddenly laughed from behind the Thug.

"Who?!" the Thug was taken aback, turning to face the new comer.

Who else, if not Chris with a faint smile on his face. However, his eyes held no hint of smiling.

"Don't stick your nose in others business" the thug warnt deeply.

"Mister! please save me!" the victim seemed to have seen a ray of hope, crying out pitifully.

Chris gave the man a deep look. Seeing his pathetic posture brought back memories of when he always got bullied. He clenched his fist.

"Beat it now!" the thug gave the last warning.

"You should. Not me" Chris spat.

Before both men could react, Chris dashed towards the thug and kicked his hand that held the knife.

Wham!

The knife flew out of his grip. Like a speedster, Chris caught the knife and pointed it at the thug with a smirk plastered on his face.

"You!" the thug felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

 The situation changed so fast?!

"I don't want to kill you dude. You know the drill right?"

"Ah!" the thug sprang up his feets and fled.

"You should be careful when passing places like this" Chris gave the handsome man a warning and continued on his journey.

He hadn't walked up to twenty metres when-

-[DING! HOST HAS COMPLETED HIDDEN QUEST; SAVE CIVILIAN FROM THUG. DOES HOST WISH TO RECEIVE REWARD PACKAGE?]

Chris eyes lit up as he saw this notification. He hurriedly accepted.

-[Host has received $800]

"Geez! i've struck gold hehe" Chris smacked his lips in delight.

He just had to save a couple of people from bullies and earn off them!

"Hmph. Time to pay someone a visit" his eyes gleamed with a sly glint.

 Few Minutes later

A taxi pulled over at a fast food joint. It was Coaster Food villa.

Chris alighted down and paid the taxi man. Adjusting his clothes, he took on a poise of confidence as he strode in.

The scent of grilled chicken, pepperoni sauce, chips and other delicacies directly crashed against Chris nose, causing his taste buds to water.

Just as he was about to go grab a seat, when something caught his attention from the corner of his eye.

At the cashier counter..

"You old geezer, you better scram before you make me make you" the female cashier yelled at the old man who stood before her.

Chris was familiar with this lady. Days ago, she humiliated him just because he couldn't pay up the $15 pack of chips he ate. At that time, it was a strange lady who paid up for him.

As for the old man, he had dirty beards which attracted buzzing flies and wore rags with his teeth yellow like they were gold grillz implants.

One look and even an idiot would figure out he was a homeless man.

"Please my daughter. I just want a can of water. I have been trekking under the scorching sun for many hours. My throat is parched. Please help me" the homeless man pleaded.

"Eww" the female cashier made a face full of disgust as she held her nose while trying hard to swipe away the putrid odour coming out from the homeless man's mouth with her other hand.

"Who is your daughter? you smelly old geezer" the female cashier spat on the homeless man.

The spit landed squarely on the homeless man's face, trickling down slowly.

"You.." the old man was too shocked to speak.

He didn't believe the female cashier would take such a merciless action.

"What? you want to hit me you old sack of bones? shoo! you reek of horse dung, eww" the female cashier taunted.

Just as the homeless man bent his head in shame and was about to heave, a hand grabbed it's wrist.

 It was Chris.

"You!" the homeless man was shell shocked when someone made skin contact with him.

Forget skin contact, most people found it hard to go near him by even a margin of two metres, all because he was dirty and had a pungent smell swirling around him.

"Isn't that a little too harsh?" Chris had a sick smile on his lips.

"He's just a poor homeless man begging for water. Is that enough to warrant you rejecting and humiliating him?" Chris was no longer smiling.

He felt extremely pissed off. Perhaps due to his days as a live-in-son-in-law, he shared a kind of empathy with the less privileged.

Anytime he saw those being bullied by those people powerful than them, he always felt a sense of justice, prompting him to stand up for them.

Heck! He was starting to think of becoming a vigilante.

"You! I recognize you" the female cashier found Chris face to be familiar.

After a bit of reminiscing, a sneer found it's way up her lips.

"And here i was, wondering why you would stand up for this old beggar. It's no wonder. A beggar helping a fellow beggar. Tsk. Tsk. Birds of the same feather do flock together indeed" the female cashier taunted.

Naturally, she didn't forget the embarrassing event of a few days ago. How this 'Mr-Goody-Two-Shoes' couldn't even pay up $15!.

Although Chris wore some impressive low quality clothes and a canvas. But so what? trash would always remain trash.

"Beggar?" Chris felt his mouth sore.

"What are you if not a beggar? leeching off a lady. Hmph. You were lucky enough that day. Now scram before i make you" the female cashier snorted.

Chris suddenly laughed. The mockery quite apparent in them.

"Bastard!" the female cashier thought that Chris was jeering at her.

"Old sir. Are you hungry?" Chris asked the homeless man.

 "Yes"

"Give him whatever he asks for" Chris instructed the female cashier.

"You? don't make me laugh!" the female cashier jeered.

'What an unprofessional annoying lady' Chris bit his lips in annoyance.

"Here's a deposit!" he slapped a bill of $100 on the counter.

The eyes of the female cashier and homeless man both widened. However, the female cashier quickly recovered her bearing and began berating herself for losing her composure.

It was not like it was a her first time handling a $100 bill.

After a while, the homeless man picked two donuts, a bagel, a pack of fries and one can of soda.

As for Chris, he grabbed a bagel and can of coke. The female cashier rounded the cost which totaled to the sum of a $120.

Chris paid through card and together with the homeless man, swaggered out.

"Thank you young man" with wet eyes, the homeless man thanked Chris profusely when they got outside.

"I was just helping in the little way i could" Chris shook his hand.

He brought out a bundle of cash and tactically shoved them into the homeless man's grip.

"There's three hundred bucks in there"

"I.. I can't accept it" the old man wanted to reject.

"Why not. You are a human. You deserve to be happy just like everyone else" Chris said seriously.

However, the homeless man still had a complicated expression on his face.

"Since i said you should take it, then take it" Chris sighed.

"Thank you! Thank you very much!"

Watching as the homeless man left. Chris felt pity in his heart. Just because of water, a natural resource gifted to humanity by nature, an aged man like that had to undergo humiliation of being spat on, on the face.

 Suddenly-
