Just then, his phone rang. It was Shannon, calling from home.

Dax hesitated for a moment, knowing that talking to Shannon would only make things more complicated. But he couldn't bring himself to ignore her call.

"Hi, honey," he said, trying to keep his voice steady. "How are you?"

"I'm worried about you, Dax. I know you're under a lot of pressure right now, and I just want to make sure you're okay," Shannon said, her voice full of concern.

"I appreciate your concern, Shannon, but I'm fine," Dax said, hoping he sounded more convincing than he felt. "I just have a lot on my plate right now, and I'm doing my best to handle it all."
