Christian and Daemon

“What’s taking them so long?”

Christian waited in the third-floor lounge. The moon’s already reached its peak and the noise made by the students having the time of their lives died down hours ago. The clock has passed twelve yet, Haze and Gerald haven’t given him any response yet.

His phone is dead silent. Not even a single message is sent to him by the students in question. This wouldn’t piss him off as much if not for the fact that it’s past midnight.

Both Yvonne and Damian have left an hour ago already. They told him to just rest and wait for a reply tomorrow but Christian doesn’t want to. He wants to get news right away and he wants it to be a positive one. After all, the pressure is on him since its his father’s candidacy that’s at stake here.

“Those good for nothing bastards! I’m gonna skin them alive if I see them again!” He screamed again, thrashing the room and breaking an expensive vase within the room. Making one of the guards enter to look at what happened – one who has something distinguishable about him. That is, unlike the rest of the guards, he doesn’t have shades worn on.

“Sir, you know how your father feels when you break stuff.” The guard said, making Christian stare at him sharply.

That’s all that he can do though. Christian didn’t do anything other than this. He just offered a sharp stare. An empty threat which can’t escalate to anything worse.

“I’m not in the mood for this right now Bernard” Christian answered. “Besides, it’s not his money that the vase was bought with. It’s mine.”

“I see sir. But you should still refrain from doing these kinds of things.” Bernard added, not even toning down. “Even though you aren’t in front of the public eye, you should still learn to control your emotions better. You’ll find that there’s a lot of benefits in doing so.”

“Are you trying to lecture me right now? Do you want me to remind you who it is that feeds your payroll?” Christian threatened. “You’re not indispensable Bernard. You finding favor with my father doesn’t change anything. I can take you out anytime.”

“I’ll take that to heart sir.” Bernard bowed his head. “I’ll be taking my leave then sir.”

Christian didn’t say anything more and the guard is able to go away without having to endure another second with his master. As soon as he got outside however, he is met by the other guards who, all looked at him as if he’s something really crazy.”

“What?” Bernard asked.

“I can’t believe you sir. You really have a death wish, don’t you?”

“It’s Leon right?”

“Yes sir.” The other guard replied courteously.

“Leon, how many months have you been working here kid?” Bernard asked.

“Around six sir.” The other guard answered with a bit of confusion.

“Six huh. Usually, you guys don’t last long since the master like changing guards from time to time but, I’m different. I’ve been here since the you master was born and he has been under my care ever since.”

“If I let him grow as he is right now then it won’t take long for him to reach a point where he becomes an incompetent ass who just orders everyone around and thinks that he’s always on the right track. Without reprimanding him, he’ll put us all in danger in the future because, like it or not, he’s going to be the one leading the organization in the near future.” Bernard sighed.

Although he said all of this, it’s not like he doesn’t feel heavy from having to deal with Christian on a daily basis. It does get tiring doing this, especially since his young master is hard headed and would usually go through with his plans regardless of what anyone would say. That’s also the reason why thigs have escalated so far with one particular student, the same student that’s caused all of the problems that are now being dealt with.

“I think I need to be a little harder on him though. If I don’t then he’ll probably fall into the same problem a second time. Probably even worse.” Bernard added as a side comment.

Though the guard he’s talking to hasn’t lasted for more than six months yet, Bernard doesn’t doubt this person’s loyalty. Every guard within the household of the Astleys respect him after all and, if they do try to talk behind his back then it is only them that’s going to receive a punishment. That’s why nobody tries to go against him anymore.

“Are you referring to the death of that student sir?” The new guard asked.

“Daemon.”

“Pardon sir?”

“Don’t call him THAT student. He has a name. He’s Daemon Sinclair.”

“Yes sir. Forgive me.” Leon answered right away. “But how is that connected to all of this.”

“Like I said, I’ve watched the master grow all this time and, if there’s one thing that I’m sure of, it’s that he’s always viewed Daemon as his rival.” Bernard said confidently.

“Although Daemon doesn’t have anything now, he used to be the son of a very wealthy business man who once worked alongside Christian’s father. Suffice to say that the sons of these two wealthy men, have been playmates since childhood and Daemon has always overshadowed him in every aspect.”

Although he’s saying all of these things to the new guard, it isn’t like this information is something new. In fact, it’s easy to find this out if anyone just asks around the city because of how unfortunate the whole incident is. Especially since Daemon’s family has always been the ally of the masses and the common people.

“Wait, I’m confused sir. If that’s the case then why did the young master treat Daemon like trash all this time?” Leon asked.

This is the same question that’d get into anyone’s heads. If the two have been playmates since childhood and, if the father of Christian is a friend of Dameon’s father, then the natural course of action would be that Daemon would be taken under the wing of the Astleys and treated as a foster son.

Christian’s family would even benefit from his greatly. With all of Daemon’s talents, he would be a great asset to the Astleys. Yet, even with all of these being the case, Daemon wasn’t taken care of. He’s left to fend for himself, without any kind of support being provided.

“You see, Christian always felt inferior compared to Daemon. Though they’re playmates, that doesn’t mean that the young master isn’t a sour loser. He is. In every respect of the term.” Bernard added.  “That’s why as soon as all of Daemon’s money and connections washed away, the young master did all that he could to make sure that Daemon’s life becomes miserable. He succeeded of course but, that doesn’t mean that he won against his rival. Because despite everything that he’s done, Daemon survived and succeeded even with all the beating and mistreatments done to him.”

This feat has always impressed Bernard. He regards Daemon highly. That’s why he’s always pushed his young master into mending the broken bond between him and Daemon. But that never happened and, now, that same gifted child is dead because of his failure.

“So that’s his story. I’ve always wondered why the young master likes picking on that poor kid a lot. I thought there’s no merit to it.

“There is.” Bernard answered. “The young master thought he’d get satisfaction out of it.”

“Didn’t he sir?”

“He did…or at least he thought he did.” Bernard explained. “The only thing he ever wanted is to be Daemon’s equal. But that never happened and, now, this same person he’s always treated as his rival is six feet below the ground. There’s no way he won’t be pissed about it.”

“I see. That explains a lot sir.”

“It does.”

They heard the trashing that Christian is doing within the room for a second time. There’s the sound of another vase breaking and a couple of glass suffering the same fate. To this, Bernard made another deep sigh and tapped the shoulder of Leon.

“You go back with the others now. Tell the ones at the front to wait for me and the young master in the car. The day should be done already. He can’t continue having these tantrums when there are still classes waiting for him this morning.

“Yes sir.” Leonard said as this guard immediately went away; leaving Bernard to himself.

The senior guard took out a cigarette and lit it to relieve some of his stress. As he did this, he continued hearing the tantrums of his young master go on. He has to step in of course but, he’s gonna do this after he finishes his cigarette and not earlier than this.

As the smoke of his cigarette rose, he can’t help but think of Daemon again. Of the things that could’ve happened if his young master didn’t sever ties with this person. Because, no matter how he looks at it, this is the best path that Christian could’ve taken into becoming a good person.

But that’s nothing but wishful thinking now. The cigarette’s done and Bernard has to deal with Christian again. The last time for this day before he takes his well-deserved rest.
