The Call

“Hello?”

The guard flashed his light across the whole of the rooftop. Looking thoroughly at the entirety of the place. As he did this, another person caught up to him. A second guard that he called to assist him.

“Well? Found anything Brian?” The other guard asked as he also flashed his light, moving it across the parts where his partner’s light doesn’t reach.

It’s not possible for them to get a blind spot because, even if someone moves to the darkest part of the rooftop where the light can’t reach, they can’t outrun the movement of the flashlight, nor predict where it’s headed. That being said, the two of them found nothing there. Not a single soul.

“See?” Mark, the second guard said as he slapped the back of his partner’s neck. “I told you there’s nobody here.”

“That’s strange. I could’ve sword I saw someone move up here.” Brian said, giving one last attempt at scanning the area. But to no avail. Other than the two of them, there isn’t anyone else there.

“Cut that out man, you’re giving me the creeps.” Mark replied.

The cold winds hit the skin of the two guards, making them shiver. Everyone in the academy knows that Daemon died on the rooftop. And even for those who don’t strongly believe in the supernatural, it’s easy for the mind to play tricks. Especially in the darkness of the night

“Let’s just go back to our post.” Mark suggested. “This place is gonna be locked up anyway so we shouldn’t worry about it anymore.

“Yeah. Finally right?” Brian replied. “I was wondering when they’ll finally buy a lock for the rooftop door.”

The two exchanged a couple more words as their steps began to grow fainter every second on the rooftop. With this is the disappearance of their light and…the reappearance of Daemon.

“Ahhhhhhh.”

Daemon came up from the edge of the rooftop. He held on to it with his hands – an easy enough thing for him to do because of how many times he’s made to perform this very same act by Grant, Haze, and Gerald.

[Mind Cleanse] kept him calm throughout the whole ordeal as well. Meaning his palms didn’t get sweaty, nor did they shake or lose strength while he performed an act that would be considered crazy under normal circumstances.

“This system thing is already proving to be very useful.”

A wry smile grew on his lips. As he said this, the game window that appeared to him earlier came back. The same one that he wasn’t able to read because he had to hide from the guards.

[Revenge System Function – Purgatory]

[Information - Individuals killed for the sake of a quest is delivered straight to purgatory. Their bodies and everything within their person, as well as every strand of hair and body part will be erased from the world as well.]

“Wait, does that mean…” Daemon looked at his clothes. This is supposed to be drenched in Grant’s blood yet there’s nothing there. Not even a spec of it. He has a white uniform as good as new.

The teen then looked around the rooftop where traces of Grant’s blood should be found. There’s none. Not even a drop and, this made Daemon feel even more exhilarated. Because what he’s been given is a perfect clearance from any murder he commits.

“Hey, don’t you think you’re pampering me too much Astaroth?” Daemon asked as he looked at the sky gleefully.

“If you give me this much, I won’t be able to hold back you know…” The lips of the teen curved slowly, almost reaching his ears as a malice-filled grin filled his face. More sinister than what he’s shown to Grant.

“I might just kill them all right now.”

*Ring*

“Oh.” Daemon picked up an item from his pocket. Taking out an item that’s crucial for his quest – the smashed phone of Grant.

The truth is that Daemon has been following Grant even before the sun could set. He’s been reincarnated within this time already. He’s also given a set of clothes by Astaroth because the demon didn’t want to send the mortal back butt naked. That’s why Daemon has a brand new uniform which he also used for the task at hand.

That being said, he’s able to see everything that Grant did. Right from the moment when this person talked over the phone and, the events that lead to the idiot throwing away his phone. Daemon picked this up and hurried to follow his target which is easy enough to do. He didn’t chase after Grant but, instead, moved to the location where he’s sure that the bully would take a rest – another place where Daemon is taken whenever he receives a beatdown.

Daemon patiently waited here with a large rock on his hands. As soon as Grant appeared and left his back exposed, Daemon smacked the back of his head with the rock. Making him fall unconscious and, everything after that is what followed.

“Man, you’re really famous huh. To think that someone would call you at this time of the night.” Daemon looked at the broken screen of the phone. He can’t read the name anymore because the screen is basically glitching at that point. It’s close to dying completely.

“Whoever you are, I’ll get back to you as soon as I get this phone fixed.” Daemon said, putting the phone back in his pocket.

The sudden call made Daemon’s head halt in his thinking of revenge for a moment. This gave him the space needed for him to understand that, he can’t do all the murders at once. As the system dictated, only those that’s part of the quest will be taken to purgatory. As such, if Daemon kills anyone that’s not on the quest, then he would have a corpse that could be traced back to him. And he can’t have this.

“I shouldn’t rush this. I have all the time in the world now.” Daemon said as he looked at the screen in front of him that’s still floating mid-air. Making him think of something else.

“Wait, how do I even use this?” Daemon placed his hand on the system window and, as soon as he did, it stretched into a full interface.

All of his stats came out along with options to see the settings of the system. There’s also a tab for the quests and achievements. As well as all the individuals he’s killed so far.  On parts where there is something new, there is a red dot at the bottom-corner-right of the interface. Giving Daemon an idea on where he should begin.

Other than this, there is also a close button marked with an [X] on it. This is how he’ll be able to shut down all of the system notifications temporarily. But before this, Daemon decided to click on the notifications that he has to read first. After all, these will help him get stronger.

*Ring*

“Again?” Daemon’s interrupted by Grant’s phone that rang for the second time. The teen took it out of his pocket again and thought of what he should do next.

“Should I answer and scare them a bit?” Daemon thought to himself. “No, that’s the stupidest thing I can do.”

Daemon pondered on his options about the call and, all of it simply led to him coming to the decision of putting the phone on silent. Even though the screen is broken, the volume button is just on the corner right of the phone. Daemon pressed on the volume lowering multiple times until the phone went on silent mode.

“Good. That’ll do for now.” Daemon said as he went back to the interface.

Daemon continued conducting his business. Reading through everything that the system has because, Astaroth didn’t give him much explanation. As he did this, the phone alerted of another call but Daemon didn’t hear this nor notice it because it’s back on his pocket and its muted.

But here is where the trouble starts actually. Because the phone that he got isn’t normal and the calls aren’t normal as well. Grant, just like everyone else who’s in the same circle as him, has a GPS tracker on their phones. And if nobody answers the phone again, then the GPS will be used to track down the phone – leading to the oblivious Daemon.

The night is still young. There is much darkness to go around. And in its depths, there’s a chance that another life will be claimed tonight.
