Chapter 4

This time, the friendliness made Clayton behave more politely and not say rude things to him. In fact, Otto's attitude showed that his work was so great that he could command the people around him.

He must be an essential person or the leader of a group? Conjecture after conjecture popped into Clayton' head.

"Mr. Clayton, I am Otto, servant of the Arnould Family," Otto said to Clayton, now tilting his head in confusion.

"Servant? Ar-nould Family?" asked Clayton, repeating Otto's words.

Otto smiled in response to Clayton' question before answering. There was a sense of longing that Otto wanted to shed, but not for now. He had to explain to his memory-impaired master about who he was.

"That's right, the Arnoulds are the richest family. The family lost its sole heir who was rumored to have had an accident and lost his memory. Mr. Sawyer-your father-knows that this was all planned by someone. He wanted you to die in the accident, but you did not. Mr. Sawyer has learned that you were saved by Daniel Astor and lived a life of painful humiliation." Otto explained to Clayton about his family, which had never once appeared in his memory.

"Wait, if he knows about my life, where has he been all this time? Why did you only come when I became someone despised by the Astor family?" Clayton wanted to ensure that the family Otto described was indeed the one he never remembered.

"Forgive us, Mr. Clayton. Mr. Sawyer is trying to find the perpetrator who injured you. In fact, all data about you is hidden for your own safety. Only then can we come once Mr. Sawyer manages to get the person's data. We've been watching you from a distance for half a year now, Mr. Clayton. Really, I'm sorry we couldn't help you." Otto looked down for a while, regret in his eyes. He was sad that he couldn't help Clayton. For a loyal servant like Otto, it was great sadness and failure not to be able to protect his master.

It took a while for Clayton to accept Otto's explanation. Unfortunately, Clayton still couldn't remember anyone from his past. This surprised Clayton, and they felt there was another game.

"So, I'm the heir to the Arnould Family who disappeared in an accident? I had an accident half a year ago and lost my memory. All this time, grandfather was kind enough to keep me alive, even until the end of his life. I thought that I was really from the lower class all this time. But... no, no. You must be deceiving me, right?" Clayton pointed at Otto with his index finger, there was a sense of worry that was currently making him hesitate to make a decision.

Otto smiled, it was not easy to explain to someone with memory loss like Clayton about his past. Therefore, Otto was still patient with his explanation.

"Sir, the Arnould Family is deeply saddened by your disappearance. Mr. Sawyer did all this for your safety. Now, Mr. Sawyer wants me to pick you up to return to the Arnould Family." Otto's calm demeanor made Clayton lower his temper.

Clayton took a step back. He couldn't immediately trust the man in front of him. How could that person know he was the Arnould Family fortune heir?

"Mr. Sawyer will be happy to see you back. Your family must have provided the best treatment for that memory loss condition. Everything you need will be taken care of, Mr. Clayton."

"This is impossible, all this time I was just a poor man and was always humiliated. Now you come and tell me everything, like a dream. Or maybe you want to deceive me, don't you? Who will believe what you say? The sole heir, in a very rich family, that's impossible."

Clayton dismissed Otto's explanation. This fact was too far-fetched for him, even like a boast that could have made him fall deeper and sicker.

"Sir, don't brag. It's possible that I am another Clayton, who-"

"I'm not wrong, sir. Mr. Sawyer has sent me all this time to follow and watch over you from afar. We are truly worried and saddened by what you have been going through."

"Then, why are you showing up now? Has the person who wanted to kill me been caught?"

"Mr. Sawyer doesn't want to see you get hurt again, Mr. Clayton. Therefore, Mr. Sawyer decided to hide everything from the media and secretly monitor your life with the Astor Family."

"Perhaps, you guys are like this so that you can carry out a better scam. I don't want to be fooled. It's enough that my life has been ruined. I don't want to sink further into the fantasy of becoming a great man by listening to you guys."

"Mr. Clayton, I will take care of you and help you regain your memory."

"No way! You must want to hurt me."

"On what grounds did I hurt you? In fact, I and those who are here, are helping you to solve the problem with that man."

"That's true, but I don't know what will happen, do I? I won't come with you until you prove to me, that there is no element of deception here." Clayton looked around. Everything seemed to look normal, and nothing suspicious could harm him. Otto's words and eyes also seemed convincing and sincere that the old man wanted to help him, but Clayton still had to be wary.

"Well, is this evidence that Mr. Clayton is willing to come with us? The Arnould family has settled your debt of 3000 dollars to the loan sharks."

"What? No way. That's a lot of money. You know what? I had to work several years to pay it off. Now, you just pay it off? No way. You must be lying."

"Why would I waste the Arnould Family's money if you're not an important person in this family?"

"How do you know all this? About me, my debt, and information that no one else knows but myself." Clayton looked wary. He was worried and full of suspicion that the man before him was a spy of those who wanted to bring him down. Moreover, he had often been humiliated by the Astor family.

"Of course I know, all this time... didn't I tell you? The Arnould family and I are monitoring your every move, no matter what you do."

"Are you a stalker?"

Right at the end of his sentence, Clayton's cell phone rang. Otto invited Clayton to take the call. Just as they were talking, the name of the loan shark Otto was referring to contacted Clayton. The man swallowed a few times, feeling really anxious. What if the loan shark got him to talk about paying the outstanding debt?

"Ha-halo? What's the matter, isn't it not time for me to pay?" asked Clayton to make sure before someone on the other side charged him.

"Mr. Clayton, of course I'm contacting you to inform you of the debt settlement you just made. Thank you very much for settling the debt before I did. If you need any assistance with funding, please do not hesitate to contact me again." The loan shark's tone was very polite. He was frightened because he had received a cruel reply from Otto.

Clayton found it strange that the loan shark was suddenly so polite. "What? Okay. Is it really over? I don't owe you any more money?"

"Yes, of course. Everything has been paid off. I'm sorry, sir. From today we have no more relations. Thank you." The loan shark simply disconnected their call. This made Clayton even more confused, and he looked at Otto questioningly.
