Night Talk

It had been three hours since Axton had woken from his dream.  I haven't fallen asleep yet. This is very annoying, because we have to get up very early tomorrow, to do the mutual cleaning of this old prison.

Even though, I am the type of person who falls asleep easily, especially after feeling at ease in this cell,  I would have fallen asleep when everyone was still talking. Tonight feels different in some ways. Maybe, it's because of my curiosity regarding Axton's dream. When I asked him to explain his dream, the fierce man chose to remain silent and immediately returned to his bed.

The occupants of block G-28 snorted loudly, making it even more difficult for me to concentrate while trying to sleep. My eyes had grown tired of staring up at the dimly lit cell ceiling. The moonlight streaming in through the top window should put me at ease. Unfortunately, that did not occur.

Srrk.. Srrk...

My bed suddenly moved amid the din of other people. I'm pretty sure it was due to Axton's movement. Slowly, my inquisitive, make me moved to the edge of my bed, intending to spy on Axton. However, Axton appeared in front of me in less than a minute, with a cold, zombie-like expression.

"Hah!"

I backed up until my head hit the handle of the bed on my left.

"What exactly are you doing? Do you think, I'm a ghost?" With a straight face, Axton inquired.

I'm still nervous and panicked, and my head hurts a little from the earlier impact. Actually, Axton's tall figure that appeared in front of me out of nowhere resembled a ghost. Furthermore, the only part of his body that was visible earlier was his head.

"I apologize, Sir. I was just surprised to see you appear out of nowhere."

I put on a nervous smile, I bet he know and notice that I was concerned enough to look him in the eye.

He approached the stairs to climb up to my bed with a flat face and a crooked smile. I'm not sure what he was thinking as he looked up and down the stairs.

"By the way, sir, you weren't sleeping, were you?" I ventured to asked him.

"You can heard to the atmosphere here, how can I sleep peacefully? I was in a solitary cell in the previous prison, not a crowded cell like in Rebbibia. You're lucky the cops sent you here. Rebibbia is a very welcoming prison for new criminals like you," Axton stated icily. His eyes were still fixed on the stairs on the bed. He seemed very interested on it.

"Most people would speak that way. They said the same thing when I walked into this cell. But... unfortunately, I'm not a criminal who deserves to be here," I said quietly. When Axton looked at me sharply, I panicked and quickly added another sentence, "No-no, I didn't mean to offend you, sir! Really! I just--."

"May I sit on your bed?" asked Axton.

I immediately nodded my head and shifted from a prone position to a sitting position. I'm also surprised at myself for being in such a relaxed state without even realizing it. Fortunately, Axton is not a frightening man, if what the personnel in this prison said was true, Axton could have broken my head.

The strong body appeared in front of me in an instant. As he leaned against the end of the bed, Axton straightened his legs. His long legs almost touched the other end of the bed, he looked like a giant sleeping in Barbie's house.

"By the way, didn't your parents defend you in the case?"

Axton gave me a cold level expression. I got quite excited when I heard that question. It appears to be an excellent opportunity for me to delve a little deeper into the former members of the monstrous cartel.

"Sir, I am an orphan. I have been raised in an orphanage since I was a child. The person who set me up was actually very nice to me, for some reason, she had a thing for me. I was devastated because she had promised me so much in order for me to get the education thaat I so desperately desired, but it had all turned out to be a lie."

I remembered all of Luvita and Noah's kindness, and sometimes, I feel sad and disappointed at the same time. The genuine smile they used to give me has now completely vanished, replaced by hatred.

When the flashlight suddenly shone on us, I panicked and gasped. I just remembered that every night, officers will patrol and walked to the each cell in order to reduce crime.

"Yes, sir," Axton said loudly, looking straight at the light. "What's up? Is there something wrong?"

"Uh! N-No! I'm on my duty to checking. You can keep up your conversation! Good night!"

The warden quickly exited the front of the cell. When Axton reprimanded him, I was amazed and stifled a laugh because I heard the officers was panicked.

"May I compliment you? You're fantastic, sir. Even that officer wouldn't dare you with your powerful aura!" I said cheerfully. I'm gradually gaining the confidence to speak openly in front of Axton.

Axton chuckled, then fixed his gaze on the moonlit window. His sad expression was reflected in his eyes. Perhaps Axton was reminiscing about his glory days, which everyone feared.

"I used to be very proud of myself, but I no longer want that. I despise myself, now. By the way, you're the first person I've purposefully spoken to in the middle of the night in the last thirteen years. Perhaps because I was placed in a cell with so many persons." Axton looked at me and said, "Besides... you're the same age as my dead daughter."

This time I could sense the good side of this grim-faced man. Also, he didn't put on a cold face.

Axton's words were flattering to me in some ways. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the story's journey in prison. Maybe he'll remember me and tell others about our friendship later, right?!

"T-thank you very much, sir. I'm flattered. To be honest, I don't know anything about you, when everyone is talking about you, I get confused. I'm not familiar with the criminal world, but from what I've heard, you are a wonderful person and a member of Italy's largest cartel. Oh, and I'm sorry about what happened to your daughter, Sir."

"You must have heard of a former D'Angelo mafia cartel member who murdered his own wife, right?" Axton inquired. He gave me a sinister smile, as if he was trying to intimidate me.

I lowered my gaze as his face became enraged. I didn't dare nod in agreement with what he had just said.

"Well, young man, you have nothing to fear or feel sorry for! I apologize for forgetting your name, by the way! I can't change the fact that I'm known as the murderer of my wife. It's sucks sometimes... Huh! Okay, I believe our conversation has come to an end, thank you for taking the time to accompany me. Good night, young man!"

Axton tapped me on the shoulder and smiled briefly before returning to his bed. For some reason, I was disappointed to see Axton get out of bed. Not for anything, but because I still can't get into his life story. Damn! I'm intrigued. I hope tomorrow, he can't sleep, again.
