Chp 7. Brief Course

Dylan arrived in a room that seemed so spacious, deliberately prepared by Richard and Louis because they thought Dylan would need it. The man arrived in awe; there were many luxurious items he had never seen.

Maya arrived with a maid. The maid arrived with both hands, holding a metal tray filled with snacks and cold drinks for Dylan to enjoy. Maya could see Dylan's innocent expression when he first saw his office.

"Working as a servant in the Watson family won't get you all this, will it?" asked Maya, smiling broadly as she walked in, approaching Dylan, who was still frozen in place standing by a wooden workbench.

"Of course. This office room is usually reserved for important people, like CEOs," Dylan replied.

"You'll take that position. Mr. Richard and Mrs. Louis are old enough to manage everything," Maya replied.

"You know, they need their retirement time to enjoy all the achievements they've made," Maya said.

Dylan sighed. He was beginning to realize that they planned to let Dylan manage everything when they retired. Dylan didn't mind at all. After all, this was his best moment for a significant life change.

"Even though I'll be the CEO of every company Sullivan owns, I don't have the skills to be a CEO," Dylan replied.

"That's why I'm always by your side, now and then. I've served for five years with Mr Richard. I know quite a bit more about business than you do," Maya retorted.

Despite her years of everything about business and the company, that woman was still humble and obedient to Dylan. Richard took her on when another company dumped her, Maya's previous position being a secretary.

Slowly, progress was made in Maya. Through the training provided by Richard and Louis, she learned the ins and outs of the Sullivan company. However, the two old people certainly wouldn't reveal Sullivan's secrets to Maya, considering she wasn't part of the family.

"Then why didn't they appoint you as CEO?" asked Dylan, turning his body to look directly at Maya.

"I'm not part of the Sullivan Family. I don't have the right to take an important position in a Sullivan-owned company," Maya retorted, smiling broadly.

"But you do. With all my knowledge, I will teach you what business is and how to make good decisions," Dylan explained.

"Alright. I'm pinning my hopes on you. Teach me something, Maya!" said Dylan, looking very enthusiastic.

Right before the two discussed the Watson family information, Maya would briefly explain a few things about Sullivan's companies, including Sully Corp, where Dylan would be the CEO.

Among the dozens of companies owned by Sullivan, Sully Corp, which was engaged in advertising, media, and telecommunications, was the largest company owned by Sullivan. Even Sully Corp is able to compete with overseas companies in the international market.

Dylan sat on the black cushioned chair behind the desk, opened the high-specification computer, and Maya began to explain slowly. She opened a presentation file containing Sully Corp's data, including the company's sales charts.

"These sales charts are important for you to study so that you can make a decision afterwards. We will discuss it later," Maya explained.

Starting from the company structure chart, the job desk of each position, to the cooperation process currently being carried out by Sully Corp. All those elements were being explained by Maya to Dylan, Richard and Louis, who were outside Dylan's office and could only smile with relief, finally his son was willing to accept his new fate.

The two of them could not have put Dylan in the orphanage in the first place and trained the boy to be a CEO later on. However, Dylan would have missed out on the most important traits a company leader should have: empathy and respect.

People who are already wealthy will be arrogant and know-it-alls. However, if they were born poor and miserable, they will have a high sense of appreciation because they consider everyone equal.

"Will he be able to bear this much weight?" asked Louis, worried.

"Maya has been watching him since last year. She's so confident that Dylan will be able to handle it. Our son is a hard worker!" said Richard, holding both of Louis' hands in hope.

"I know, but the world of an employee and the world of a CEO are different things. I'm afraid he'll make the wrong decision when he does," Louis said.

"That's why we must keep mentoring him even after retiring. I can bet that he will fully master leadership skills within 1-2 years of employment," Richard explains.

"During that time, we will continue to stand by him no matter what," Richard added.

Louis cleared his throat. His heart, which had been worried about Dylan's condition, now calmed down after Richard reassured him. The two of them stepped away to return downstairs while Maya was still inside the study teaching Dylan.

Feeling brief, Maya finished the short lesson -even though it took an hour. The woman certainly didn't want Dylan to feel overwhelmed by the lessons, so she would continue the learning another day, preferably accompanied by hands-on practice.

"It turns out there are a lot of things I need to pay attention to in order to become a CEO," Dylan said, his head entirely overwhelmed by all the new information.

"The CEO is the head of a company. If the head hurts, then the whole body of the company will, too," said Maya.

"We'll wrap up the lesson for now and move on to discussing Watson," Maya replied.

She walked away from Dylan's desk and approached a long sofa facing the glass table, food and drinks already served and ready to be enjoyed by both of them.

"I have to be honest with you. You've been mentally very strong for the past year," Maya replied, praising Dylan's mental resilience.

"I lived and grew up in an orphanage and worked as a waitress in a difficult life until I met them. There have been countless difficult moments that trained my mentality," Dylan explained.

"It looks like Mr. Richard and Mrs. Louis' plan worked out well. You grew up to be strong, not physically, but in heart. People would probably give up if they got the same treatment as you," Maya explained.

"Then what information do you want to give me?" asked Dylan, trying to draw Maya back to the main discussion about Watson and his company.

"Oh, you're right. I just got information from the shareholders at Monarch. Robert wants to hold a meeting with the shareholders," Maya replied.

"So?" asked Dylan, curious.

"Sullivan invested some money into Monarch. We hold a few percent of the shares," Maya said.

Dylan smiled. Maya had just explained about the types of meetings, one of which was a shareholder meeting. The CEO usually calls the shareholders because there's something important to say, whether it's a decision or a recent share sale.

Sullivan had a 10% stake in Monarch, the largest shareholder. He could use the opportunity to bring Monarch down from within.

"Who are the other shareholders besides Sullivan?" asked Dylan.

"There's Rockefeller, Hudson, Lawrence, and Watson. We have the largest percentage of shares among the three non-owner families," Maya said.

"Can I buy shares from the three non-owning families?" asked Dylan.

"You can, as long as there is an agreement between you and the three of them. For now, it's better if you just go there first to find out what the shareholders' meeting is like," Maya replied.

She opened her cell phone, looking for a video reference Dylan could use to learn about the shareholder meeting system. Once found, she handed the phone to Dylan, telling him to watch it.

"Oh, so this is how shareholder meetings work. Alright, I have an idea for tomorrow!"
