Cathy and Adam looked at each other and the woman smiled nervously, fidgeting at the rem of her clothes.
“Morris, you must be mistaken…,” she said, shaking her head from side to side.
Morris stood up from the table, fists clenched after hearing the words spoken by Cathy, then turning to her.
“What do you mean by that? Do you think I, the greatest collector of fine wines in this city, wouldn’t know a good wine from a bad one?” he asked, then brought his hand to his chest with a thud. “I’m Richard Morris!”
Cathy looked at her husband for help, but he did nothing. She then turned to her daughter, who had her mouth open, trying to think.
“It’s just…” Cathy licked her lips and swallowed hard, before her face turned red as she looked at Alistair, accusingly. “That wine must have come from his now-defunct family! Because, please… how would a poor boy like that be able to afford such expensive wine? And two bottles at that!”
Cathy sneered, crossing her arms over her chest and looking disapprovingly at Alistair, who remained quiet, just watching.
“Whatever, the wine is original!” Morris complained and sat back down.
The rest of dinner went by awkwardly and at the end, when Adam invited Alistair to stay the night, he declined.
“At least go walk your husband to the door!” He said to Lisa, who rolled her eyes.
“No need. I know the way, Mr. Anderson,” Alistair smiled at the man, before turning away, not even sparing a glimpse to Lisa. She clenched her fists at her sides and followed him. Alistair heard the footsteps, but still, he didn’t turn around and kept walking.
“Are you going to ignore me?” She asked and he took the car keys out of his pants pocket.
“Why? Would you like to come home with me and consummate the marriage, dear wife?” Alistair asked, looking at his wife, who held her breath. The light from the nearby streetlamp illuminated Alistair so that his broad shoulders and good physique were visible. Lisa frowned, determined not to give in to temptation. Alistair smirked teasingly. “It is our wedding night, after all.”
“Now, stop being a pervert!” She scolded and crossed her arms. “If my father invites you again, don’t come!”
Alistair let out a low laugh.
“I don’t plan on coming back, except to… celebrate our divorce,” he said and gave Lisa a wink before turning and walking away.
She watched him get into his car and drive away. Lisa stomped her foot and pulled her cell phone out of her pocket, dialing her best friend.
'This jerk! Who does he think he is?' She complained internally, as she waited for Marie to pick up the call. 'Just because he's handsome, he thinks he’ll be able to seduce me? Ha!'
But deep down, a voice told her that she could have taken advantage of the opportunity. It wasn't every day that you saw a man with features and physique like that.
“Hi!” Marie’s voice came from the other end of the line. “Lisa, how are you?”
“Marie, hi! Hmm… Do you remember how my father wanted me to marry a man I’ve never met?”
“Yes, yes,” Maria said, flipping through the page of the gossip magazine she had in front of her on the bed.
“Today, that bastard came to demand the wedding, and now I’m married to him!” And she told Marie how it happened, as well as the dinner. Marie remained silent, just listening to her friend complaining. “And then, he even had the nerve to try to get me into his bed! As if I would let a poor, classless guy like him touch me!”
“How awful, Lisa!” Marie sat up in bed, her legs crossed. “What do you intend to do?”
“I have to find a way to get him to file for divorce… I can’t do that myself, or my father will disinherit me!” Lisa pouted.
“So, let’s deal with this man. He needs a lesson to learn that his place is not by your side.”
Lisa smiled when she heard that. Even though she was very malicious, she didn’t have Marie’s brain for scheming. She hung up the phone and went back inside.
“Dad, why did you choose this man? Seriously… just because his father helped you once?”
“His father did more than help me, and not just once, Lisa,” Adam sighed and shook his head from side to side. “Without him, we wouldn’t be where we are. And Alistair is a smart boy, always has been. He’ll be great, I’m sure of it. If you’re a good wife and help him, you’ll both have a good life. I know you will.”
Lisa didn't believe it, but she didn't want to argue with her father, who seemed to really like Alistair.
“At least our children will be good-looking,” she joked, and Adam laughed. With that, Lisa turned to go to her room, and the expression on the young woman’s face changed immediately. “Children who will never exist!”
The next morning, Alistair woke up, exercised, spoke to the apprentices and, when it was almost nine in the morning, he received a call and was tempted to reject it, as it was an unknown number.
"Hello?"
“Alistair!” Lisa’s voice was heard and he already felt tired. “What are your plans for today?”
He raised an eyebrow, put the phone away, and looked at it, as if something was wrong.
“Ah, I don’t have any specific plans, why?”
“So, dear husband. I don’t think we need to be enemies, do we?” She giggled, and Alistair still wasn’t convinced. “I called because I wanted to know if you’d like to go with me to a Fencing Club. I’ll show you around the city little by little. How about that?”
He wasn't very interested, but he gave a defeated sigh and nodded.
“Very well. Where?”
“I’ll send you the location. See you soon!”
She hung up and soon, a message appeared on Alistair's phone. He grabbed his car keys and left.
When he got there, he saw some people shouting euphorically, cheering for someone. As soon as he looked at the center of the room, two men were dueling.
“Go, Edward!” Alistair heard someone shout. He saw Lisa across the arena and went over to her, who was accompanied by a woman with long, dark, wavy hair, amber eyes, and porcelain skin.
“Oh, Alistair! This is Marie,” Lisa said and Marie nodded at him, looking back at the arena.
“Go, Edward!” Marie shouted and Alistair looked back at the two fighting men.
“That’s Edward Hunter. He’s the town champion, he won a prize and everything,” Lisa said, and when Alistair turned around, the aforementioned man had beaten the other, taken off his own helmet, and looked in their direction, smiling seductively at Lisa.
Lisa had no interest in the man, however, this was a good opportunity to humiliate Alistair Woods. It had been Marie's idea.
“Lisa! You’re getting more beautiful by the day!” Edward said, and when he saw Alistair there, he looked at him with disdain. “Who is that?”
“Lisa’s husband!” Marie answered sarcastically, and Edward’s smile became even more unpleasant.
“Husband?” Edward looked Alistair up and down. “So, ‘Lisa’s Husband’, how about a game?”
Alistair let out a mocking laugh.
“I have never, in my entire life, held a sword…” Lisa and Marie looked at each other, confident that they would get what they wanted. Alistair’s demeanor changed immediately and his eyes became sharp, “for show. I’ve only wielded it to kill.”
No one knew that before Alistair became a doctor, his master trained him in martial arts and combat techniques, even sending him to war for two years. Alistair, only eighteen years old at the time, was already recognized as an excellent fighter. One of his specialties? Swords and daggers! In a year in the field, Alistair became known as the “King of Mercenaries”, however, there in that city of Lothan, the people around thought that the blond was just bragging without really knowing how to do anything. 'He must be scared to death!' Lisa thought and smiled with her lips closed. Alistair wasn't the kind of man who let himself be influenced by other people, but he had never been so disrespected in his entire life as he had been in the last forty-eight hours. So, with his hands behind his back and a calm smile, he turned to Edward, who was watching him with his brown eyes. “Very well. I accept the invitation to a game.” Marie looked at Alistair with interest. 'Lisa hadn't mentioned t
Alistair let out a cold laugh and was ready to give a fitting retort, but a commotion at the door interrupted him. Turning his head, he saw Daniel Smith, the man who had given him the wine, standing there and next to another man with a fierce expression on his face. The people around let out gasps of surprise and Alistair looked around for a second before his eyes focused again on the men near the door. “Lorenzo 'Wolf' Lupo himself!” One person exclaimed and Alistair raised his eyebrows. “I just can’t believe it! OMG, this must be my lucky day!”The man was known for owning most of the businesses not only in Lothan City, but in other cities in the surrounding area. His power reached international territories and, because of this, he was greatly respected, but more than that, he was feared. Alistair knew that this man's business was not limited to what the media reported. Lorenzo Lupo, known in the media as the Shadow Wolf, was the head of one of the largest mafia organizations in t
Edward couldn't believe he had been openly ignored in front of those people! He looked around, retracting his hand and swallowing hard. However, no one really had their eyes on him, but rather on Daniel. Noticing the richest man in town walking toward him, Alistair frowned and raised his hand discreetly, indicating to the man that he did not wish to be recognized. If there was one thing Alistair valued, it was discretion. Daniel noticed Alistair's movement and, even though he didn't want to stop greeting him, he would never contradict Alistair Woods. So he stopped walking and sighed, then turned to Lisa, who was not far from him and smiled at the woman. “Miss Anderson, is that it?” He asked and Lisa smiled widely before reaching out and shaking Daniel’s hand. “Mr. Smith! Yes, I am the only daughter of the Anderson family. And I am so excited and honored to finally be able to speak to you in person!” She placed a hand on her chest. “I admire you so much!” Upon hearing Lisa's last
Alistair, finally out of the Club, took a deep breath. He looked around and frowned, covering his face with his hand. The day was a bit sunny and he definitely wasn't interested in frying in that heat. Taking the key out of his pants pocket, Alistair unlocked the vehicle's door and got in, driving away from that place. “Lisa’s invitation wasn’t an act of kindness or trying to be friendly to me, as a wife or even a friend,” he said aloud, alone. With one arm resting on the car window, he raised his hand to his forehead, as if in deep thought. “She asked me out there to try to humiliate me.” He let out a mocking laugh, shaking his head from side to side. The traffic light turned green and he accelerated the car. “How ridiculous! To think that Edward Hunter had any chance against me!” Alistair wasn’t the type of person to brag about his abilities, but sometimes it was necessary to put people in their place. And that day it was Edward Hunter’s turn. He parked his car in the garage of
“No…!” Lisa feebly tried to keep distance between herself and a bald, chubby man who had her around the waist. The man's smile faded when he heard the door open with a bang. Before he could speak, Alistair had already let out a loud roar and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, releasing the man's hands from Lisa's waist and landing a good punch on the abuser. “What the hell is this?” The man asked, holding his face and, seeing blood on his own fingers, he pointed at Alistair. “Who the hell do you think you are, hitting me like that?” Marie was already inside the room and let out a little scream, then ran to Lisa. “Lisa!” she tried to hold her friend, who had fallen onto the couch. “Babe, get up!” “Wait for me outside,” Alistair said with a cold voice and Marie nodded, putting Lisa’s arm around her neck and getting out of there. As soon as the door closed, the fat man tried to hit Alistair, who dodged and grabbed him by the back of the neck. “Do you think getting a woman drun
“I’m not lying!” He then looked at Lisa. “Wife, why don’t you come clean about what happened last night?” Lisa bit her lip. She couldn’t remember a thing from the night before. However, she doubted Alistair would have saved her. Not only was he useless, but he was probably mad at her for tricking him into going to the Fencing Club. She completely ignored the fact that he had beaten Edward without batting an eyelid. “I-I don’t remember,” was what she replied, and Alistair threw his hands up and ran one of them through his hair. He then looked at Marie. “Very well, you were there. Why don’t you tell the truth?” Alistair looked more confidently at everyone around him, especially Edward. However, this one kept a smile on his lips and Alistair narrowed his eyes. Marie stood up and Cathy approached the girl. “Come on, honey, tell the truth. Don’t be afraid,” The girl swallowed hard and looked at Lisa and then at Edward. Her eyes fell to the floor and Alistair's bad feeling was proven
“What do you think you’re doing?” Alistair asked calmly as Lauren’s hand trailed down his broad chest.“Helping you relax,” she replied with a sultry smile, her voice low and alluring. “You work too hard, Ally. Let me take care of you.”He gently removed her hand, only to feel another pair sliding up his legs. Alistair caught the redhead’s hands and shook his head, his disapproval evident.“Oh, Ally, don’t be so uptight,” the woman on the floor murmured seductively, biting her lip. “I promise you’ll like what my hands can do... and more.”Alistair stepped away, brushing off her touch. He appreciated these women but refused to be swayed by their charms—a daily test since moving to the village.“Ladies, I’m fine. Thanks,” he said, his voice steady yet final.“Ally, I think I’ve hurt myself,” said a brunette with feigned innocence, pressing him into a chair. “See here—” She began to unbutton her shirt, but before she could continue, the clinic door slammed open.A striking woman with a s
Alistair looked at Jessica, his eyebrows furrowed. “Why did you stop me from going after this girl?” He asked, irritated and looked at the door with disdain. “War Goddess… Please, she is nothing more than a child in terms of power, to me!” Jessica tossed her dark blonde hair back her shoulders and sighed deeply, before turning her sky-blue eyes to Alistair. “Ally, you know what the master said: no fighting, and certainly no killing, inside the clinic,” she pouted and kept her hand on Alistair’s chest, drawing now circles with her fingers. “You’ve been so stressed by that gal… I can help you get that ungrateful one off of your mind.” “Thanks, but I’m fine,” Alistair gently took Jessica’s hand and pulled her away from him before sitting back down on his chair. He closed his eyes and sighed, thinking what a relief it had been not to have to marry that woman. She was insufferable! “Ah!” Jessica said, before pulling a letter out of her bra and smiling at Alistair. “I almost forgot, Al
