1 THE DIVORCE

“Divorce?” Aidan said with shock and lowered his gaze to the old woman sitting before him.“ Are you kidding me?”

Mrs. Emily comfortably sat with an arrogant face. Judging from her looks, one can easily tell that she is a wicked woman.

She was the mother-in-law of Aidan, and she was seeking a divorce for her beloved daughter, Kate.

“You heard well,” she smirked.“ Poor bastard with no plans for the future.” she cursed with gritted teeth.

Aidan was speechless to see this woman raining insults on him after what he had done for her family.

What suddenly came over her? Is this a prank to see his reaction? Or is she drunk this morning? Which one?

Aidan was lost in thoughts as he stiffened in one place as he gaze at his mother-in-law.

“Do you think I'm joking? Huh?” She began.“ My daughter is presently a CEO. And her company is among the big companies here in Nasa city.” she exclaimed and rolled her eyes.

He was more confused to see the seriousness in Mrs. Emily's words. At first, he thought she was joking when she said she needed Aidan to divorce his wife.

“For this reason, you and my daughter can no longer go along because you are not good for her.”

The more Mrs. Emily speaks, the more Aidan gets furious. Why will this woman be voicing out this rubbish to him?

“You are nothing, but a good-for-nothing slave to my family.” she spat out every word with anger.

Seeing her raging, Aidan chuckled and shook his head.

Although her words kept piercing his heart like a sharp arrow, he was also happy that his wife is now a CEO.

But then, divorce was the main issue here.

He decided to keep calm, so he can figure out what actually went wrong and who wanted them to get a divorce.

“Well,” Aidan began,“ It's clear to me that it's no longer a joke,” he muttered and Mrs. Emily said sharply.

“For your entire life, this is the first time you are understanding a situation without being told twice.” she sniffed and Aidan giggled.

“So, who wants us to divorce? You, or Kate?” he inquired with a calm voice as if he weren't bothered about the divorce.

On hearing his question, his mother-in-law sneered and said,“ it isn't a big deal for you to know who wants the divorce. The most important thing is the divorce.” she snapped.

Three years ago, when Aidan married his wife, her family was not wealthy. But since their marriage started, the business of the family boomed and just in years they became a top 10 company in the city.

Everyone in the family can testify to that. It was no longer news to them.

Aidan was fuming in anger because, in these three years, he did all the house chores and worked as a servant, to support his wife to operate the business. He said that he also paid a lot.

But because they are ingrates, they didn't see this. Rather, they kept treating him like trash, and he kept ignoring them for peace to reign.

However, as it stands now, he was out of patience, and he couldn't bear the insults of this family, especially his mother-in-law.

“An adage said, behind every successful man, there's always a woman.” said Aidan as he crossed his arms over his chest.“ But in this case, the opposite just happened.” he conversed.

“And what does that supposed to mean, you illiterate?” she grinned.

“Well, that means I'm the reason behind my wife's success and if there should be anyone who is supposed to benefit more from this, then it should be me,” Aidan announced.

Mrs. Emily couldn't help but burst into heavy laughter.

“You should be ashamed of saying that.” she sneered.“ and besides, you never worked for a single day because you wanted to help my daughter. You are nothing, but a slave to this family.” she let out and grimaced at him.

Aidan raised a skeptical brow with gritted teeth.

“I won't stand here listening to your insults. Because I worked tirelessly for the good of this family.” he retorted and Mrs. Emily had a look that said ‘whatever'.

“Go to hell with your hard work.” she cursed.“ All I want for my daughter is a divorce and that's all.”

Aidan nodded with countless thoughts pacing up and down in his mind.

However, when he noticed that his mother-in-law was serious about this, he said,“ Let my wife come and tell me she is the one who decided to divorce.”

His statement made Mrs. Emily laugh teasingly as she clasped her palms against her face.

“Oh heaven, why did you give me such a stubborn son-in-law as this?” she muttered as she tried to hold her laughter.

A maid was sent to fetch Kate. Without delaying much time, Kate arrived in the living room, where her husband and mom were glaring at each other as though they just finished waging war against each other.

Aidan averted his gaze to Kate and opened his mouth to ask, but before he could even say a word, Kate had cut him off with a hand signal, telling him to keep shut.

She looked at Aidan peacefully and chuckled and swiftly shook her head.

“Yes! I was the one who asked for the divorce,” she announced nonchalantly.

“What?”! He couldn't believe his ears.

Aidan's mouth widened in shock after her words echoed in his ears like a joke. Or maybe he was dreaming. This can't be possible.

Did anyone deceive her to come up with such a thing? Or is it a prank? Which one?

Never in his life had he ever thought his wife would do something like this to him. After the suffering he has endured in the past few years? This is unbelievable…

Aidan walked up to her and placed his hands on her shoulder and stared her in the eye.

Her eyes were not holding any trace of joking in them. That's when it dawned on him that Kate wasn't joking.

“Kate, tell me that this is a joke, please,” he said with tear-filled eyes.

Behind him, Aidan could hear Mrs. Emily laughing at him silently.

Kate took a deep breath and breathe out heavily.

Sighed…

“Aidan,” she called out with her eyes shut.“ I'm sorry, but this is what I have made up my mind to do,” she explained without sympathy.

Aidan became so weak that his grip loosed on her shoulder and his hand ran down her arms. He was so cold and lost.

Who will ever believe that his wife will ever say this to him, one day? No one would have believed it if they were told.

The love they had for each other before was what made them get married. Then what now? Is she eyeing another man outside?

Seeing how lifeless Aidan became, Kate said,“ I will give you a check with one million dollars as make-up.” she declared and her mother’s face changed.

She never wanted Kate to give him that huge amount of money because she felt he was only working for them as a servant and nothing more. So, why give him the money?

Mrs. Emily wished she could stop her daughter from offering him that money, but she was sure that Kate would not listen to her.

Kate began pulling out her wedding ring from her finger. Aidan couldn't help but stare at her in surprise.
