Chapter 3

Eduard couldn’t stand up straight after the kick and punches that he received.

Was that how a poor man like him would need to endure in life? He never stepped on anyone for him to suffer like that.

Eduard was walking on the street without knowing where to go. He felt he lost his purpose in life after he saw his wife with someone else.

He was about to cross the street when all of a sudden, a white car stopped in front of him.

“Eduard,” a man went out of the car and called his name.

His eyebrows furrowed as he looked at him.

“Butler Nathan!” He shouted. “What are you doing here?”

“What happened to you?” The butler asked as he looked at him with scratch and wound all over his face.

He shook his head and forced a smile.

“It’s just a misunderstanding,” he simply said. “Where are you heading?”

“I am really looking for you, Eduard. Get inside the car,” the butler ordered.

Even if he was hesitating, Eduard got inside the car.

“What do you want?”

“I know that it has been years since the last time we talked, but I need you to come back. Your ban is lifted and your father wants you to return and take over the position in the company.”

His eyebrows almost touched each other when he heard what the butler said.

He shook his head.

“I don’t want a complicated life. How could it be possible? How about Eddie?” he asked one after the other.

“Well, Eddie has already been kicked out from the company. He had been caught swindling the company’s money. Your father is sick and he wanted you to go back,” the butler continued.

He didn’t know if he would feel happy or what for the news that he had received. It felt like he was always the last choice in everyone’s life.

“I know that you and your father have not got along for years but just consider his condition now.”

“But I am just an illegitimate son,” he couldn’t help but say.

“Maybe you are but you cannot deny that you still carry your father’s last name. It is your father who will decide who will inherit the company.”

He heaved a sigh. Though there was sadness, he couldn’t also deny the slight hope that suddenly appeared inside his chest.

“Yes, sir? What do you need?” The guard at the entrance quickly blocked Eduard’s way as he tried to Enter the E.G Corporation.

“I am going to meet the CEO.”

“Do you have an appointment? The CEO doesn’t accept walk-in visitors. You must book an appointment first.”

“Just let me in,” he said and then showed his ID to the guard.

Shock registered to the guard’s face as he made a way for Edward.

“Miss?” Edward called the attention of the woman at the reception.

The woman looked at him from head to toe. When her eyes went back at him, one of her eyebrows was raised.

“Yes?” She said in an unpleasant tone.

“I am here to see Edgar George,” Edward answered.

“You are looking for the CEO? Who are you?” She said in a condescending tone after she saw that Eduard was poor. He was wearing a plain white t-shirt with the collar already worn out. “I am sorry but beggars are not allowed here. Go and leave now, Mr. before I ask the guard to drag you out of here.”

“Miss, I just need to talk to the CEO after that I will leave.”

“Didn’t you hear me? You cannot beg here. The CEO doesn’t have time to spare for you,” the woman said with a hint of disdain in her voice. She even rolled her eyes.

Eduard rolled his fist. He didn’t know how that woman had been employed in the company with such an attitude.

“Oh, hi, sir,” the receptionist greeted the person who just arrived.

The man was wearing a business suit and was holding a suitcase.

“I need to see the CEO.”

“Okay, sir, what is your name?” The woman continued to speak with the man even with a smile on her face.

“Miss, I arrived here first. I told you that I need to talk to the CEO,” Eduard uttered as he was trying to hold his patience because he didn’t know what would happen to him yet once he successfully talked to the CEO of the company.

“And who are you? Like I told you, beggars are not allowed to go to the CEO’s office. If you are going to get a solicitor, I am so sorry but this isn’t the right place.”

“Miss—”

“Do you want to see the CEO?” The woman cut him off. She was obviously losing his patience with him.

Eduard nodded as he was hoping that the woman would allow him to go up and meet the CEO in person.

He looked at her intently and he was ready to beg if needed.

“Here,” she said and handed him a tablet. “Book an appointment for him.”

Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him and before he could even get the device the woman pulled it back.

“Do you even know how to use it?” She continued to mock him. “I can’t believe that you really are so persistent to see the CEO,” she added while shaking her head.

“Miss, I am begging you. I really need to see the CEO. I need to talk to him.”

“Miss, how about me?” The man in suit interrupted their conversation and then he looked at his wrist to check the time in his watch. “I really need to talk to the CEO.”

“Oh, yes, sir. I am so sorry for the delay. Of course, you can go ahead, sir. I am sorry again,” the woman kept apologizing.

Eduard heaved a sigh. He didn’t know what to tell the woman in order for him to get inside. He didn’t have a choice so he showed her his ID.

“Eduard George…” The woman paused for a moment. “Are you a scammer? Are you trying to pretend to be related to the CEO so I will let you go up?”

Eduard shook his head.

“Guard! Please help me here! This man doesn’t want to book an appointment but keeps on insisting to see the CEO! Please get this man out of here!”

“Miss, I am Eduard George—”

“No, I don’t believe whatever you are going to say. How can a poor man like you be related to our dear CEO? Stop making up stories because no matter what you are going to say, you are not allowed here! You poor man!”

“Guard!” The receptionist continued to call the guard’s attention.

They were already getting so much attention from the other staff of the company. Each of them were looking at him. It was as if he did something wrong.

He could see their gazes at him as if ridiculing him.

“What’s going on here?” The guard asked the receptionist.

“Guard, why did you let this man enter? Take him out. He is trying to make trouble here. Can’t you see?”

“But he showed me his ID.”

“How can you be so stupid? That ID can be done anywhere! There’s no way this stinky poor man is related to our CEO! If you will not get him out of here, I swear that I will report you and you will lose your job for not being careful.”

“Okay,” the guard said and then he turned to him. “Sir, you need to go before the situation gets worse. I am afraid that I will drag you out if you refuse to leave.”

“Look, I am not here to cause any trouble. I just like to talk to the CEO—”

“What is this commotion all about?” A familiar voice was heard from behind.

Eduard’s heart was beating so fast as he heard the voice of the man that he wanted to see. He couldn’t be mistaken.

That was Edgar George’s voice.

“Sir, this man is insisting to see you and even tried to trick me by showing an ID which has the same last name as you,” the receptionist quickly answered and looked at him with a threat.

“Young man,” Edgar called his attention.

He turned around and they were facing each other.

“Eduard…” Edgar mumbled.

Eduard looked at the man in front of him. He looked older because of the white hair he had now.

He didn’t know what he would feel.

“Sir?” The receptionist was shocked. It was something that she didn’t expect to happen. “Do you know this man?” She asked as her face turned white. It looked like she had seen a ghost.

“How can you act like that towards this person, Miss?” Edgar asked the receptionist.

“I— I am so sorry, sir. I thought he was trying to get money from you. I didn’t know that he is someone you know. Given his—”

“Stop right there and then. Apologize to Eduard,” he ordered in a firm tone. “I can’t believe that you will act like this. You are a receptionist and you should have a welcoming attitude to anyone that will be entering the company.”

“I— am really sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to act like that,” she said, stammering.

“Do you know who this man is? This young man will be the next CEO of this company,” he said, which made the receptionist and the guard shocked.

The people looking at them were also shocked by what they heard.

“Now, apologize or else you can go to HR and claim your final pay.”
