Chapter 4

Eduard was standing in the middle of the office of the CEO. In the middle of the room were framed achievements of Edgar George.

He never thought that that day would come that he would enter that place.

The middle-aged man with a stern expression was looking at him while he was sitting at the executive desk. He aged for the years that he hadn’t seen him. He looked slightly thin. He looked pale and probably because of the sickness that the butler mentioned.

“How have you been?” Edgar asked.

Eduard looked at the man in front of him. His heart was racing so fast. 

“D— Dad,” Eduard called his father’s name with longing and concern. “How are you?”

Eduard was nervous. He wanted to come near him and hug him but he held himself.

“What happened?”

“I do not want to go over the details anymore, Eduard but just like what Butler Nathan said, you can come back,” he said. “Just let me know if you’d like to or not so I know what I should be doing.”

“What are you doing here?” A woman’s voice was heard from behind.

His father was shocked like he never expected the woman to be there while they were having a conversation.

“A— Ana, what are you doing here?”

“I received a call from your assistant. Seriously, Edgar? I didn’t expect that you would really do this.” Ana answered and then looked at Eduard. “What are you doing here? Who allowed him to enter this company? I can’t believe that you still have the face to show up after what you have done!”

Eduard took one step away from the woman. He didn’t know what to do. He was afraid that Ana wouldn’t understand what was happening and something might happen to his father.

“Don’t act as if you do not know anything, Ana. Don’t say anything to make your son innocent in my eyes. You know what Eddie has done and I am not stupid to let him stay here in this company and make it slowly sink. I wanted Edgar to come back and take over my position,” his dad said without beating around the bush.

“Are you out of your mind? How can you choose Edgar over your legitimate child? This child of yours ran away after everything that you have done for him and now you are taking him back? What is happening to you, Edgar? You just got sick and it looks like you are also losing your sanity.”

“Stop. Watch your mouth, Ana. It is you who do not know what you are talking about. I am not choosing anyone, Ana. Eddie already took his chance to prove himself if he is worthy to take over the company. I have worked hard in my entire life for this company to grow and there’s no way that I will allow anyone to make it sink and disappear in broad daylight. I will not let it ”

“I cannot believe that I am hearing this from you, Edgar. Eddie made a mistake and as your son and your heir, you should give him a second chance. I can see that he regrets what he has done.”

The woman then left the room but she gave him a sharp glance. It was as if she was giving him a threat as he went back to his father’s life.

“Eduard, you have heard that very clearly. I do not want all my hardship to go in vain so even if you are my illegitimate son, I am giving you the chance to prove yourself that you are not like your brother.” 

“I have a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. I want to work here in your company,” he said with determination.

There was a deafening silence between the two of them.

Eduard didn’t know what was running inside his father’s mind but he knew to himself that he was happy to get the chance to be back in his father’s life.

“Eduard, I have thought a lot about this. I know that I am already getting old and I have been sick. I thought that Eddie would value everything about the company but it turns out that I am wrong. He did things that do not align with my values and that is the reason why you are here. ” he finally said which made his hope rise a bit.

“If you truly want to work here and you like to be considered as my heir, then prove that you are worthy of it.”

Eduard straightened his back. He never thought that he was going to hear that from his father. 

“I understand, Dad. I am ready to prove myself. I want to earn your trust and respect. I know that it isn’t going to be easy but I will be doing my best.”

“Very well then. I will give you a chance but please understand that this isn’t going to be easy for you. You have to work hard just like anyone else does. I am hoping that you will not be easily enticed like what happened to Eddie.”

Eduard nodded his head. 

 “Yes, Dad. I am ready to take on any challenge that will come on my way. I want to prove that I will be taking the place not because I am your son but because I am capable enough to take over the company.” His voice was full of determination.

“Very well said. Just remember that I am not expecting anything else from you but the best. Show me what you can do for this company,” Edgar said in a firm tone. “I won’t go easy on you. Get a better understanding of how the business works so you can make sound decisions. The first task that you have is to be able to get a high share percentage at D.S Group.”

Eduard was shocked for a moment. D.S Group.

“Isn’t that the company owned by Donovan Smith?”

“Yes, they are. And even though the company is just a start up, it has a potential and we do not want it to become big and be a threat to us,” his father explained.

He nodded.

“If you succeed in entering the company then well done. If you fail then it only means that you are not qualified to take over.”

“Can I have the document about the D.S Group?” He asked.

“Yes, go to my personal assistant and he will hand over everything that you need.”

Eduard was able to get the information he needed. He researched about the D.S group and its stakeholders.

He found out that two of the shareholders were in big financial trouble which he used to allure them in his offer.

He immediately contacted them and explained the vulnerability of the D.S Group so they wouldn’t hesitate to sell their shares to him.

“Thank you, Mr. Nixon and Mr. Rey. It’s nice meeting you,” he said and then closed the documents that were signed by the two stakeholders.

“Well done, sir. I cannot believe you can get a high share in the D.S Group without spending a lot of money,” Ryan, his dad’s personal assistant exclaimed.
