Chapter 4

Luthan's eyes burned with rage as he glared at the greedy man before him.

“Father, don't you think it is a rather high amount? Our guest here is possibly bankrupt already. There is no way he could buy her off,” Kimberly spoke up and the audience laughed.

“I suggest you leave, Luthan, before you embarrass yourself. We must, however, thank you for being stupid enough to blow off all your wealth in pursuit of recognition. We don't need a murderer and rapist amongst us. This event is for nibbles and…”

“Shut your mouth!” Luthan fired and everyone was taken aback. The power in those words left them dumbfounded and unable to speak. “I will send you your miserable net worth now!”

Signally at the guard who held his phone, everyone watched in awe as eighty million dollars was wired to the Carter family.

The shock on their faces meant nothing to Luthan as he walked over to Mary and showed Alexander out of his way.

There was just one thought running through everyone's mind as they stared in awe. In a matter of minutes, they all crowded Luthan, who had lifted Mary in bridal style now.

“I'm Raven Duke, the first son of the Duke family. If you don't mind, we could be acquaintances. Here's my card,” Raven offered, shocking everyone.

The Duke family were worth over a hundred million dollars and they excelled in real estate management. They didn't just work with anyone, but multi-millionaires and even billionaires.

Raven held his breath as Luthan ordered a guard to take the card. It would have been embarrassing if Luthan had rejected his card.

The Carters were thoroughly embarrassed. They had been trying to work with the Dukes for years but had been constantly rejected because they weren't rich enough.

Yet their hair offered his card, himself, to an ex-convict who just happened to have an insane amount of money.

“Did you see that? Where could he have possibly gotten such an insane amount of money from?” Camille whispered to Arthur.

“I don't know. I took everything he owned. There is no possible way he could have stashed some away, right?” Arthur mumbled.

“He's leaving, we should follow him secretly. I'm sure we will find something,” Camille whispered back.

Luthan was stopped by a few more guests.

“I'm Terry Walker, my family owns the most reputable law firm in the state. Give me a call if you're interested.”

“I'm Harmony Feng, we deal with Clothing and Textiles. We could be your designers. We work with big names in the paper and would really love to partner with you.”

“I'm Zaya Quinn, a TV reality host. I would like to invite you for an interview with the Rich & Influential show.”

Luthan signalled his guards to take care of them and take their cards. He needed to get Mary out of there.

Her frail hands clung to him.

“Don't worry, Mary. I am here now. No one would dare harm a single hair on your head. I am going to deal with the animals who did this to you,” Luthan promised.

“The Carters,” she mumbled weakly. “They lied to my family. I wasn't going to be used as a concubine…”

“No?” Luthan paused.

“I overheard Alexander talking with his grandfather. They have a lot of shady things going on behind the scenes. They are involved in drug trafficking and they were going to use me as one of their vessels to transport drugs,” Mary informed him.

His grip on her tightened protectively.

“They did this to you?” He growled.

“No, no, it wasn't them…” Mary refuted. “It was your family who did this to me.”

“You mean my brother did this to you?” Luthan's eyes darkened. “How could he be that heartless after what he did to you?!”

“I needed money and my family wouldn't help. Even begging on the street couldn't fetch me enough money to treat our son. I had to go to the begging the Kings, and they ordered their guards to beat me, and Camille threw acid in my face so I would never be able to find my way to them again,” Mary sobbed.

Luthan didn't know how to feel, but what caught his attention, however, was the fact that she mentioned a son.

“A son? What son?” He asked.

“I never told you,” she sniffled. “But after Arthur assaulted me, I fell pregnant. I had to give the baby to my maternal aunt because I couldn't take care of him. About a year ago, he fell really sick and needed surgery. I thought revealing our son to Arthur would make him take pity on us, but I was tagged a homewrecker and manhandled.”

Luthan's heart tugged. If only he had come back for her earlier. Just a year earlier he would have spared her the suffering.

“I sent you letters every day. Postcards. I even called the number you gave me but not once did you answer any of them,” Mary sobbed. “Did you not want to speak to me anymore? Was I that much of a burden to you?”

“Mary…”

“I wasn't going to ask for anything. You were suffering just as much as I was. I just wanted to know that you were safe,” she sniffled.

“I am sorry, Mary. I will make it up to you, I promise,” Luthan apologized.

Of the truth, Stanley insisted he changed his number and Mary didn't even have a personal number he could reach her on. He had given her the address on the card Stanley gave him, but on arrival, they left the country.

Her letters and postcards never got to him. Deciding it was better to make things right than dwell on regrets, he asked, “Where is the boy now?”

“Dead.”
