After waiting for a moment, Viona asks the others if there are still those who want to leave the meeting room. He even gives a warning to those who decide to stay.
“Mr. Charles wouldn't mind if anyone opted out now. But whoever later chooses to stay, after that they will not be allowed to leave this ship.”
One of them raises his hand like he wants to ask something.
“At least, tell us first the reason behind all this. Why did Charles choose this obscure person to lead this company?”
“I have no obligation to answer that question. If you mind, you can leave. We still have a lot of people who can replace all the positions here,” says Viona.
That one who expressed that question immediately takes his leave. And after that, another two also choose to leave the room as well. Until finally, there are only 7 people in the room besides Viona and Victor left.
“Anyone? After this, there is no option for you to leave anymore,” says Viona.
The seven people don’t give any answers. Two of them are women. The rest are all the men who have been able to maintain their composure since the beginning. One of the five men then says something with a slight smile towards Victor.
“It has been so long, hasn't it? Victor?” he asks rhetorically.
“It's an honor for me that Uncle Benjamin still remembers my name,” Victor replies with a slight smile, lowering his gaze slightly.
“The last time we met was 15 years ago. There's no way I could recognize your face after that long. But I knew it was you, since Charles will never put a joke about this serious matter,” replies that old man named Benjamin Smith.
The other high-ranking officials look at each other after that little dialogue between Victor and Benjamin. In fact, that man named Benjamin is the person appointed as the Vice President for the company, and it seems very clear that Benjamin knows Victor quite well.
“Do you have any special relationship with Charles?” asks another man named Joseph Colter.
“Don't you even realized it yet? It is certain that he is William Charles' only son whom he had been keeping a secret so far. Otherwise, Viona will not create such conditions that seem to bind us after we choose to stay here,” says a beautiful 47-year-old lady named Emilia Werner.
“Yes, I'm glad all those who decide to stay are the people who I really knew and could trust,” says Viona.
After that Viona walks over to a table with a phone on it.
“But I remind you, the condition I mentioned earlier oozed from Charles himself,” she continues.
After that, Viona presses a few buttons on the phone and a moment later a man's voice answers the call.
“Bring the files here, please!” she says.
[Yes, Mam!]
After waiting for a while, an employee comes and brings the files Viona asked for. Those files are the agenda they need to discuss for that meeting.
And there Victor's attention is diverted when he finds that the employee who delivers the file is none other than Oliver, that one cocky guy he met earlier in the restroom.
Of course Oliver is also stunned there, to find Victor is sitting on one of the chairs among the executives.
“Victor?” he mumbles with a disbelieving expression.
“Oh, isn't it our dear Oliver?” Victor replies.
Victor casually asks Oliver to come along and sits next to him. Oliver looks so awry to sit there, being in the ranks of the company's top brass.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Oliver whispers.
Victor only smiles, but he doesn't give an immediate answer, letting Oliver find himself the answer he needs.
Each of those executives convey the points of the problem they want to raise, as well as the solutions they have provided one by one.
Currently, Victor can't follow any talk being mentioned in the meeting. Because since the beginning, he hasn’t had any preparation, while he is also having a serious matter regarding his divorce with Emma.
But luckily, those executives seem able to understand his position and condition. So they don't push Victor too much to give immediate response for what they have brought up in the meeting.
They just let Victor know and learn the big picture of the issues for Counterbrand as much as he could grasp. But then, there is someone who is a little nosy, provoking Victor to give a response.
“So what do you think, Victor? You've seen the development of some big players in all sectors. Some of us coincidentally provide the same input, so that we try to find new market sectors while still surviving and competing with what we are currently working on. Do you have any other suggestions?”
Victor puts a blank face. He then averts his attention to Mr. Benjamin, but Benjamin closes his eyes by holding his smile.
“Well, umm, we could have started looking for an idea for a start-up that would, mainly, focus on, digital. Or maybe like social media,” he expresses in a bit of an unsure way.
He then puts an awkward grinning after finishing those stammered words.
“You mean, a start-up mainly on a digital platform?” that lady responds with an awkward feeling.
“Well, since you intend to try something new, you better prepare yourself for a new perspective. Why don't you start by listening to someone like Oliver here,” says Victor as he averts their attention to Oliver who sits next to him.
Oliver's face immediately looks so pale and could only look down at the table which has absolutely no files on it.
Viona even closes her eyes and shakes her head with Victor’s antics.
Victor's cell phone suddenly rings. He intends to reject the call. But he changes his mind as he finds out that it is Mr. Benigno.
Only then does he remember that he forgot to take care of his problems with his former boss.
[Hey, Victor! Didn't you promise me to pay for everything double? Where are you? Don't tell me you run away and has no intention of paying for it]
“Sorry, Sir. I forgot. I'll be right there to sort it out in person.”
After Victor hangs up the call, he finds that all eyes are on him. Those people deliberately turned off their cell phones for the meeting. But now Victor just casually responds to a call.
However, Victor uses it as an excuse to avoid the meeting and decides to leave.
“You see. This Oliver here was talking about the importance of having a breakthrough idea that can bring profits, or about an idea that can solve a problem. Why don't you try hearing his ideas first? Who knows, you will see a completely new perspective about the new market conditions in other sectors.”
Victor then gets up from his seat and pats Oliver on the shoulder.
“Good luck!” he whispers.
Oliver doesn’t say a word. He doesn’t even dare to lift his face, still looking down with a pale face.
Victor leaves the meeting. None of those executives voice their objections either. Except for Viona, who immediately rushes after Victor to the next room. “Hey, Victor! Where are you going?” Victor answers her as he keeps walking out of the room and heads to the elevator. “Sorry, I have a problem that I need to solve immediately. If I don’t clear this issue, that Mr. Benigno will be mad at me. Even though he's just a pizza shop owner, some say he has a connection with some mafia.” But then Victor pauses for a moment right after he touches a button on the elevator, realizing that he doesn’t have enough money to pay his debt to Mr. Benigno. He has two bank accounts. The one he has used since his college day, which is money he collects by himself. While the other bank account is the money he got solely from his father, William Charles, one of the richest businessmen in the country. He has saved a stellar amount of money since he rarely used it in the past. However, his father had pu
Oftentimes, people will realize the existence value of something, only after they lose it. Just like Mr. Benigno, who is now beginning to feel the loss of a reliable employee like Victor. Regardless of how often he scolded Victor, the truth is that Victor had worked for him for five years should mean something to him. Actually, he has found a replacement for Victor. But it makes him realize it even more, how difficult it is to find an employee as good as Victor. After all, where else could he find a graduate from a renown university, who would want to work for him as a pizza delivery man. “Told you! You are going to miss him. A man like him is such a rare nowadays,” says a waiter teasing Mr. Benigno. “Shut up! Why don't you just go out there and teach that new kid a thing or two,” Mr. Benigno shouts back as he walks away. He returns to his office, grabs the phone, and tries to call Victor again. But Victor doesn’t answer his call. It makes that fat Italian man with a thick mustac
Meanwhile, Emma is currently in a dilemma. Even though she had divorced from Victor, she isn’t even Lucas' legal wife yet. And somehow, Lucas seems so reluctant to bring her to live with him at his house along with his family. And he has no intention to find a place for Emma to stay for the time being. Instead, Lucas prefers to seek help, hiring a locksmith to open the door for Emma, so she can get back into the house where she lived with Victor. “You sure this is your house?” the locksmith asks. “Why don’t you just ask that old lady neighbor?” says Emma. The locksmith glances a bit to the house next door, and indeed there is an old lady, Mrs. Greta, who is busy watering her little garden. Seeing that the old lady doesn’t really concern about them, the locksmith is quite sure that the clients he is serving currently are not thieves. After all, he is just lazy to bother to make sure of it. And so, he just unlocks the house for them. After being able to enter the house, Emma shows
She picks and examines them, both the ring and the box. She might not be an expert to judge a jewelry item. But she starts to doubt that it is a fake ring. Only after she finds the name “Johnson’s Pleasantry” under the box, she is affirmed that the ring can’t be a fake item. Johnson’s Pleasantry is a renowned jewelry shop in the town where Victor visited before to buy that item. The shop is very popular amongst couples who want to get married. It is known for their validity and good reputation in selling jewelry that is specifically for weddings. “There’s no way Johnson’s Pleasantry would sell a fake ring to people who are going to get married,” she mutters with widened eyes. Emma puts her shoes back on, and rushes out of the house with the ring. She locks the door and pulls out her cell phone to call Lucas back. She thinks it would be better to go with Lucas than to book a taxi with her own money. Or maybe to help her to sell the ring with the best price she could get. But then
She indeed expected that a jewel from Johnson’s Pleasantry would be expensive. But she never expected it to be that expensive. “A Million?” she mumbles by holding her head with one hand, while the other hand is trying to keep her balance by finding something to hold. “So? Did it enough to surprise you, Mam? I’m also happy for you to have such a good husband like him,” says the owner. “No! This is too much. I expected it would be expensive. But 1 Million dollars is too much.” It attracts the attention of the few customers who happen to be there. But Emma doesn’t pay that much attention. She still can’t imagine how Victor managed to collect that much money to buy that ring. That’s when she remembers about Victor having two bank accounts. All this time, Victor only used one of his bank accounts. But Emma never paid much attention about the other one, since she believed it wouldn’t be much different. After all, what would she expect from a husband who had only been a pizza delivery m
It’s not that she can’t sell the ring at all. It’s just that the shop owner is just reluctant to rebuy the item back, since he is a bit dubious with Emma. He is afraid of the risk of buying a stolen jewel.“I’m truly sorry, Mam. I’m afraid you still need to discuss this thing with your husband again. He is the only one who can sell this item to us. At the end of the day, I believe your husband will insist for you to accept the gift,” says the shop owner.Emma is getting impatient, and carelessly forces herself to get the shop owner to buy the item again.“Can't you just recreate that appraisal document? I'm willing to drop the price even more to compensate whatever process you were telling me just now,” she insists. The shop owner squints his eyes with a suspicious gaze. Now he is really starting to doubt Emma's testimonials for being Victor's wife.“Mam, I'm afraid that I have to call for the police now,” he says.Emma is petrified to hear him mentioning the police. But she still insi
Emma pushes the button to answer the call and takes the phone to her ear. But the shop owner immediately snatches the phone. [Emma! Did you enter my house recently?] The shop owner becomes curious with that kind of question. He holds the phone with his palm, and takes it away from his face. “Is this really your husband?” the shop owner asks Emma. “He is my husband!” Emma answers so slowly, not wanting her words to be heard by Victor through the phone. The shop owner squints his eyes with an even more suspicious gaze. He puts back the phone to his ear and starts talking to Victor directly. “Is this really Mr. Victor William?” he asks. [Yes, I’m Victor William. Who is this? Where’s Emma?] “Mr. William. This is Johnson Bermer, the owner of Johnson’s Pleasantry. I’m the one who served you here yesterday.” The shop owner finds that Victor is silent for a while. Of course, he is a bit curious what Emma’s doing at Johnson’s Pleasantry. That’s when he remembers about the ring that he
Emma is now starting to worry where to go. It is no longer possible for her to show her face to return to Victor’s house. The only thing she could think of is Lucas. But it is clear that Lucas has been starting to ignore her before. She realizes that Lucas is more greedy than she is. Until then, she remembers something. It's about Victor's bank account which she has been neglecting. She thinks, if Victor could buy such expensive jewelry just as a gift, it's likely that Victor has much more money stored in that bank account. “That jerk! How did he get that much money? How dare he keep it a secret from me this whole time. There’s no way I’m going to just let it slide.” In the end, she calls Lucas. She really has no other choice but to compromise with him. She is not going to lose if Lucas asks for a share, as long as she can get something from Victor. [What is it, Honey? How does it feel to be there with that loser again?] “Enough with this. Just pick me up near Johnson’s Pleasantr
