Okay. Focus... A well-placed slash here... a downward sweep there... The battlefield was always gonna be a symphony of skills, and I guess it was just the natural order of things in terms of fighting and battle prowess.

*CLANG! CLANG! CRASH!*

Hearing the sound of Livia's sword clashing with her opponents, it was still a wonder to see just how monstrous she was despite fighting well above her weight class in terms of power. She wasn't the small child that she was years ago, but her speed never seemed to take a hit as her tall frame bobbed and weaved expertly throughout the battlefield.

*SLASH! SLASH!*

Delivering my own attacks towards more unwitting opponents, my eyes and ears were wide open for any sort of change in the wind or atmosphere. While we were wholly decimating our adversaries right now, the chances of a Prime

Did I even have enough time to think? The world narrowed down to just inside this small sealed dome as I strained my eyes through the darkness beyond my flames. Grigori looked downright menacing in the dim lighting; his crouched posture looking far too familiar for my tastes as I forced myself to keep calm and think things through. He was allowing me the time to think from the looks of it. While he was at a ready stance right now, I was still on the other side of the battlefield despite the fact that I just declared that we were going to fight either way. Then again, wasn't that the exact same thing he did when we first faced each other? He was a Prime, after all; far from poor old, me's weight class by at least three levels. He's underestimating me again; probably thinking that I'm still at a level that he could easily run circles around with. But

  • The Least Common Denominator   Interlude XXV: Ruby

In the brief time that she spent in this cruel world, Ruby had never born witness to such a catastrophic battle. The only thing that would even come close to such a spectacle was probably the explosion that destroyed their Furnace in the first place. And even then it paled in comparison to the wondrous cacophony of elements that wove itself into each second of the bloody affair. Her eyes drank in each and every specific detail that she managed to witness. From the way Livia moved with her blades, to the way the mysterious Num controlled her water to defend their position, Ruby made sure to memorize the way their bodies reacted to the sight of danger; blood flying everywhere with each body that fell to the wayside. It was... eye-opening, to say the least."Ruby, help me carry her back in."Heeding her partner's call, the orange-haired woman snapped

  • The Least Common Denominator   Interlude XXVI: Ica IV

It had been a while since Ica had conversed with her nominal Master. With her Master getting better at manipulating and reserving her Essence, the phoenix never really had a chance in talking to the woman for the past year. And while it wasn't a foregone conclusion that her Master had forgotten her, Ica still found herself feeling a pang of loneliness as she drifted from book to book in her Master's vast expanse of a mindscape. In the year that had passed, the phoenix had managed to read a considerable portion of her host's memories alongside a bit more of the knowledge laying about throughout the shelves of the library. In a way, she was truly becoming more like her land lady; an increasingly jaded woman unsure of their own purpose in life. Except..."How can you be so careless?"Ica at least knew that she existed solely to assist her idiot Master

Karma is such a fickle concept from what I can gather. The mere fact that every action has an equal and opposite reaction might work for tangible effects such as physics, but the mere concept that all of your deeds can add up and affect your life depending on whether said deeds were done with good or bad intentions was something that I could only see as random hocus pocus that belonged right next to horoscope readings and zodiac sign bullshit. Not that I'm discounting entire religions that believe in it, but karmic retribution was something that goody-two-shoes people believe to justify the potential suffering they get for being selfless pricks. I mean, why else would some people spend their entire life's savings to helping someone with no strings attached? Humanity is inherently greedy in nature, and the urge to hoard power and resources will always be the norm for the old society. I, myself, still had selfish desires despite everyb

The brightness of the morning sun was the first thing that came to my senses as I stirred in my makeshift bed; which was something I never expected after I elected to close my eyes and let Lace and Livia have their way with my body. I wanted to enjoy being pampered, dammit, not doze off and wake up in the future with a decently moveable body."Ughh...."With a moan, I forced myself upright as the open end of the wagon greeted me with a rather white scenery of snow and shrubbery. I didn't expect us to be up north that quickly, but I guess we hauled ass and made great time?Looking around, the wagon was somehow significantly improved with how much space I had to move around. Either they sold some of the wares for a quick buck, or they currently set up shop somewhere near here. Huh. Or maybe they were used to set up camp wherever we were right now.

The darkness was starting to encroach the wagon when Livia returned with the massive Lord Stone in tow. Holding a lone-lit torch on his right hand, Grigori looked glad that I was out and about as opposed to the constant air of worry that I seemed to constantly feel whenever I was around the others. Well, Phillipe didn't look like he felt anything beyond secondhand belief from my recovery. Not that I'd blame him; we barely know each other right now."Good to see you awake again, Little Eul!" the boisterous old man let out a hearty laugh as Livia hopped back up to my side. "Olivia here said you wanted to have the talk now?"Ignoring Livia's look of silent protest, I turned to the old man with a determined look of my own, "Yeah. I might as well make the most of my time awake. Time isn't exactly free, y'know?""A wise saying there, Crimson," Grigori no

I ignored the numb stab of pain growing inside my chest as I did my best to keep my composure. It wouldn't do me good to let my stupidity get a hold of me now, especially if the man standing in front of us was feeling rather vindictive of my decisions. I didn't really want to warm up to the idea of forgiving Arya, but goddammit did the woman made it hard for me to stay mad at her!"I suppose I'll let it slide, for now, Little Eul," the Prime sighed. "For now, let's move on to other things."I let out a sigh of my own as Grigori visibly relaxed; his menacing gait giving way to his usual casual demeanor. I felt Livia's arm tighten around me as the man switched his stance in a way that showed a lack of care about the current situation. Placing his other hand on the side of his hips, Grigori smiled as he said his piece."While you two fought admirably

It was a glorious feeling to finally feel like a normal human being again. Taking an entire day to rest had been the best idea as I had let Livia and the twins strap me to bed with my consent. And while I hated every single moment of it back then, hindsight made me appreciate my past self's pragmatism and lack of self-confidence to properly restrain herself. With a renewed vigor, I was finally able to join Livia in her sessions with our new mentor."Again!"That didn't mean, however, that my mind was focused on just getting better at a skill that I was never really good at in the first place. My mind was whirring with plans upon plans upon plans to the point of it almost overwhelming my thought processes. How the hell do I make it better in terms of execution? Was it possible for me to make it so that it was easier and yet foolproof? Would it be ambitious of me to plan a fortr

I don't even know what's happening anymore..."Huh... That looks far too complex even for you, Crimson," Phillipe snarked at my work. Technically Anne's as well, to be honest. "A square rune with that many parts? I don't think that'll work out in the long run.""You and me both," I rolled my eyes with the sarcasm of an overflowing dam. "Seriously, why are you here?""You're being annoying."I raised an eyebrow at the blunt delivery of his oh-so-important announcement. Giving him the best sarcastic inquisitive eyes I could muster, I let out a scoff as I began whatever this talk was going to end up as.'Right behind you there.'You always are, Ica. "Let's go crazy..."With a borderline manic whisper, I let my imagination cut loose as my hand moved on its own. Traps within traps, earthen sigils meant to sprout at a moment's notice, the world was my oyster as the goodies slowly accumulated with each stroke of my charcoal.'Don't get too carried away, Master.'I know. I'm not dumb enough to overload the thing before it even came to fruition. And that was the biggest risk to such a massive array as well. With so many moving parts, any wrong line or overlapping rune will pretty much make the whole thing explode. I couldn't stress it enough, even to myself. Do not make this thing more complicated than it already is.'And yet here you are having fun with it.'Don't test me, Ica. Or maybe I'll just assert me being

Fiiiineee... You win, my precious Ica.The stuttering that ensued at the back of my head was like a soothing tune as I looked over my work. The communication arrays were gonna stay, as would the Essence storage runes at strategic parts of the palace grounds. Hmmm.... Wouldn't the communication arrays be two-way anyway? So why even bother with surveillance runes like last time?My hand moved to remove the minor additions I added on the dirt parts of the grounds, leaving me with more space to work with in terms of... well... anything, really. What kind of runes would even work on shaky ground? Dirt couldn't hold anything beyond the basic types of runic arrays. Anything more complex than a three-layered circuit would blow up instantly from the strain. I could maybe run- wait... why not just do that? The charcoal streaked across the outskirts of the pa

*ruummbbllee...*The sound of a sputtering engine echoed from behind me as I drew up yet another set of circles on the board. While I kind of put the general purpose of the massive multi-circuit array at the back of my head, I really should try and solidify that stuff properly before making the main control array, shouldn't I...'Good thing you remembered that, Master.'I grumbled through the dull pain I was feeling at my knees as I focused myself back on the doodle that was supposed to be a defense system for the palace grounds. It was far too small of a circle, now that I thought about it. The size of the drawing did little to help me ascertain the types of circuits that I drew on it in the first place. Squinting even further, it felt as if I was reading my own handwriting from how jumbled and nonsensical it all looked with hindsight.

Plans upon plans upon plans. I feel like I'm repeating myself whenever I say that I'm obsessed about things going right, and if not, to have plans to be able to properly react to the failure. Fool-proofing something small was easy. Doing it again for something on the scale of a war, however, was a completely different beast. The number of variables at play, hundreds to even thousands of moving parts to look over and take into account. The time, the weather, morale, even individuals that might have other ideas and could stray from the plans put into place... It was so much to think about that hours or even days of pouring over the relevant information wouldn't be enough to take everything into account into one's plans. And even if you think you somehow managed to achieve this impossibility, there will always be something so monumentally out of left field that could just absolutely destroy any and all plans along with its sub plans and

Finally getting tired in your old age?!"Grigori grumbled in annoyance as he found himself standing his ground in his self-made fortress. Truth be told, the former Prime expected his fight to be over over ten minutes ago. However, he severely underestimated his enemies' hidden tenacity and downright stubbornness."I'm just getting started, kid!" he boisterously replied. "I'm far from being done!"Still, even as he said those words, Grigori was beginning to feel more tired than he initially expected. His reserves were starting to run dry from the constant back and forth that the combined forces of Lords Breeze and Inferno were throwing at him. And that's not to mention the current
