Chapter 005 – A Tragic Piece of News

*****

“So pitiful.”

“Our biggest prayer every day is to not have a child that will bring about our downfall.”

“Sigh… with how kind and hardworking the mother and daughter duo were, to think that they would end up being thrashed and rendered homeless because an unfortunate son had offended someone he shouldn’t have offended.”

“But I heard that it was the landlady of the house who instructed them to be thrashed and expelled; how could it have anything to do with that gentle boy?"

“Aish. What do you know? Have you forgotten that I’m a friend of Rebecca’s mother? She told me yesterday that her daughter had acquired a wealthy and influential young man from a powerful family as a new boyfriend, and due to jealousness, the stupid boy had offended the wealthy young man, thereby gaining his wrath. To punish him, the influential young man decided to purchase his family's home and make the landlady do what she did.”

“He deserved it, but… but isn’t that too excessive? How could he…”

Hearing all the murmurs circulating himself at this moment, Mark could barely hold himself intact anymore.

He trembled hysterically as he tried his best to control the tears that were fighting hard to gush out of his eyes.

He was greatly pained.

Mark couldn't believe everything he had been hearing since he entered his street, located inside one of the poorest slums in the city.

Before he got there, Mark had envisioned all sorts of scenarios that could have happened to his mother and sister, but what he had failed to imagine was what he heard.

According to the discussions he heard from everybody who had gathered in the street to gossip, a group of gangsters had gone to his home earlier that day and raided it, tossing their things out and pushing his mother and sister to be evicted.

His sister had tried challenging the gangsters and asking them why they were doing what they were doing, but in the process, she got beaten up. While her mother was also trying to protect her, she was pummeled together, and since his sister wouldn’t watch her mother get bullied, she tried fighting.

That was how the two were thrashed and made to bleed heavily, trying to protect each other.

With the heaviest heart he ever had in his life, even more than when he was getting himself dehumanized in police custody, Mark dragged his feet, forcing them to move as they refused to, and finally, after what felt like forever, he eventually got to his destination.

He became stuck in his track and his head internally busted completely, as though a bomb had gone off within it.

Mark couldn’t believe his eyes.

Tears rapidly welled up in them and they became greatly blurry.

Before he knew it, a hot liquid substance had spilled out of them, crashing to his face.

“Mo… mother.”

“Sister.”

Mark’s voice shook and was filled with despair.

Lying in front of a half-dilapidated and almost run-down wooden house, their house at this moment were two figures whose dresses had turned tattered and covered in blood.

One of them was groaning in pain as she cradled the other figure in her embrace; however, looking at her, it was obvious that she was only barely holding on right now.

Watching them, watery snorts rushed down Mark’s nostrils, then without knowing where he got the strength, he rushed forward, forgetting anything called pain.

“Mother! Sister!!!” He called, yelling and wailing in unison, and then he fell to his knees before the two people.

As soon as Mark got there, the still conscience of the two figures, a woman whose appearance screamed suffering and who was covered in blood directly forced her gaze at Mark.

“Son…” She breathed forcefully with tiredness, her voice barely above audible, then with an urgent look appearing in her almost-lifeless eyes, she pointed at the figure in her embrace.

“Hel… hel… help her.” Forcing this out, the woman’s breathing became several times heavier than it already was, and then she also finally fainted.

“Mother!!!!” Thick veins instantly popped up from Williams's neck and forehead.

Meanwhile, Mark has finally been noticed by the onlookers after he got to his mother’s and sister’s side.

They had been too engrossed in their gossiping earlier that they failed to see him when he passed through them, but upon the sound of his voice and as he rushed forward, they first went blank before finally…

“Look at him, finally returning after his sister and mother had been pummeled to the point of almost losing their lives?”

“The rascal!”

“Such a useless child!”

“A cursed child!”

The onlookers chastised, cursed, and threw all sorts of foul and negative words at Mark, but none of them, not even one showed the intention of helping him out.

“Please help!” Mark finally couldn't keep silent again when he saw that nobody would offer him a hand, but none answered.

“Please!!!!”

He pleaded with everything he had, but what he got as a response was the spite, curse, and ridicule that only increased.

They showed no pity for him, only pitying his mother and sister, but still, they ended up offering no hand of help.

It was at this moment that Rebecca, her mother, and her new boyfriend finally got there.
