Scattered

Mr. Reeves felt a tightness in his throat causing him to cough severely. Darren raised his brow subconsciously at the sound of the intense cough.

He could tell by the way he just coughed, he was having health issues.

Mr. Reeves coughed into his white handkerchief that he brought out of his back pocket. And there was blood pouring out of his mouth.

“ Ignore what you just saw and take your seat.” Mr. Reeves wipes the bloodstain from his lips and pretended like nothing serious had just happened.

Darren eyes flickered from confusion to sadness but Mr. Reeves thought snapped him out of the thousands of thoughts swirling in his head.

“ You must be wondering why you are here?” he asked Darren again as he sat on the white couch next to Darren.

“ Y..yes.” his speech were yet not stable, he was still in shock, at the this point Darren was going through so many emotions at a time.

“ Good. For over a year, I searched all over the world to find that one person that will look like my dad son. I desperately knew there was his Lookalike out there and one day I would find him.” He began his speech, Darren could barely stare at his eyes while he spoke.

He kept his eyes down to the ground while he listened attentively. “ Until my guards found you last night. I was thrilled but then my heart shattered again because you reminded me so much of Tate. My only son and heir.” His voice sounded broken as though the pain in his heart was so intense that it became so audible in his words.

“ I’m sorry about that.” Darren apologized because he could feel the pain from his words.

“ Was that why you brought me here?” Darren spoke again as he fear slowly washed away.

“ No, that is not all.” He answered, he brought his hand around his chest again when he felt another severe cough coming up his throat.

He coughed hard again. And there another blood pouring out of his mouth. Darren’s eyes were filled with total fear this time.

“ I’m sorry sir, please have some water.” The guard poured out from water into the glass beside Mr. Reeves.

He grabbed the glass and began to downs the water in the glass cup. He gave himself a few seconds before he proceeded.

Mr. Reeves could feel there was no much time for him and he has to tell Darren everything as soon as possible.

“ Thank you. I’m alright, don’t get yourself worked up.” He forced out a smile at Darren but unfortunately Darren was the last person to smile at this moment.

“ The reason I brought you here is because I want you to do me a favor. I don’t have much time to live and I need a heir to take over my company and all my properties. I haven’t found anyone worthy except you.” He said, Darren stood abruptly on his feet as he stared hard Mr. Reeves. He should be talking trash, forget the fact that he is a middle age man, they can say trash too.

“ Mr. Reeves, I am currently not in a right state of mind to take another fucking lies. I just got my heart shattered into a million pieces and I can’t have you doing a severe one to me!” he groaned in anger. Darren didn’t care if he was talking to Mr. Reeves he was just after the protection of his sanity. He couldn’t have to have a mental break down at this point.

“ This is not a joke, Darren!” Mr. Reeves shouted with his authority voice and Darren’s anger suddenly quenched down.

“ I only need you to change your name to my son’s name and everything I have is yours!” he said it loud to make it sink into Darren’s head.

“ M…my name?” Darren lips quivered. Just his name? He only needed to change his name to become a billionaire over night?

What the fuck is that? That is child’s play!

“ Yes, Darren. There’s a reason you need to have my son’s name. This might be dangerous but you have to prepare for it.”

“ This must be a dream.” He said and landed a tight slap on his face and he blinked his eyes again. He repeated again until he realized it was happening for real.

“ To prove that this is not a joke, the document is write here.” Mr. Reeves said as he signaled the guard to bring him the documents.

The guard handle it over to him and showed it to Darren to take a look. Darren could hardly hold the book when he saw the total of his net worth and he was suddenly going to own everything?

No. Big. Fucking. Joke.

“ Why do I need to change my name?” Darren asked as he took his eyes from the document.

“ Because you are representing my dead son who was meant to be the real heir. But since he is dead, I want his name to still remain in my will. They are so many people who are after this position but none of them is wealthy of this.” Mr. Reeves made a complete statement without coughing.

Darren was totally quiet. He was still shock and trying to process everything that was happening at the moment.

He gave Mr. Reeves back the documents and stood on this feet.

“ This is too good to be true. However, I will think about it.” He prepared to head towards the exit door.

“ There might be no much time left. You need to decide fast, Tate.” Mr. Reeves said, calling him Tate already.

“ Darren.” He reminded him that he was still Darren and he felt odd for the fact that he has to change his name. Darren was the name his parents gave him and now he had to sell it for wealthy?

“ Think about it and get back to me.” Mr. Reeves added with a sigh.

“ Thank you.” Darren said as he felt relieved, for a moment he felt his life was going to end here but it turned out to be the opposite.

“ My driver and guard will take you back safely.” He said.

..

"Get in the black BMW.” The guard spoke from behind as he pressed the remote on the car.

"Where are you? We need you to drive the car.” He quickly dialed the number of the driver, and in less than a minute, he began to reach for the driver seat.

The driver turned on the engine and began to drive as Darren described his apartment to him.

In about thirty minutes, they arrived at his apartment. He dropped down from the car, and as he was about to walk inside his house, the guard stopped him.

"In case you have made up your mind, call this number. It belongs to me, and I am Hector by name.” He said that with a small smile and dropped the card into Darren’s palm.

"Thank you.” Darren said as he nodded and finally walked into his apartment after he unlocked the padlock.

When he got in, he noticed that it was not the same as when he left it. His couches were all torn, as though someone had come to tear them up with knives.

His mouth dropped open as he walked further, looking from his couch to the table and small TV that was also broken.

"No!” he shouted, running his hand into his brown hair. He felt frustrated as he fell to his knees.

There were only two keys for the padlock in his apartment, and Avery had the other one. He gave it to her because she could always visit anytime she wanted, especially if he wasn’t around.

"Do you like your present?” A female voice came all the way from the door, and it was obviously Avery, especially the way she had chuckled.

"What do you still want?” Darren breathed heavily in anger as he balled his fist.

"There's still fun in making your life miserable.” Her boyfriend appeared from the corner, and he grinned at Darren.

"I'm not surprised at how foolish you are.” Darren spat out at him.

"Well, I’m not surprised at how dump you are for leaving 3,000 dollars and living in a place like this. A place like a pig house.” Eric cursed, turning towards Avery as they both laughed out at him.

As Darren was about to reply to him, his phone began to ring. He sank his teeth at the bottom of his lips to reduce the anger before he took the call.

It was his boss calling. He was already late for work because of the meeting he had with Mr. Reeves.

He was about to change his clothes and run to his workplace when he saw his apartment in a total mess.

"You better pick up the call on time, or else you will end up in bigger trouble. And who knows, you will become totally homeless and helpless!” Eric grinned as though he had something up his sleeves.

Darren ignored his mockery and commands; it was his boss who was calling, and he had to take the call because he was someone with little patience.

"Hello sir. I know I’m late. I’m ..”

"Get your fucking self to my office right now!” he growled on the phone, and Darren had to shift his ears away from the speaker before he went deaf.

"Yes, sir.” Darren responded; he grabbed his uniform and began to run out of the apartment. They gave way for him to slam the door shut.

He was about to walk out on them when he snatched Avery's handbag. He snatched it and began to search for the key he gave her. If he hadn’t given her the key, then there was no way she could gain access to his apartment.

“ Thief! Let go of my bag!”

"Thief, he is stealing something from my bag!” Avery screamed, and Eric Guards fell out of nowhere. About six of them surrounded him, but Darren did not pay attention to them until he had successfully gotten what he was looking for.

"You go nowhere, you fucking thief!” the guard in the middle said at him as he began to crack his fingers, ready to launch a fist at Darren’s face.

Darren looked at the guard who just spoke, then glanced to the other five guards, then met eyes with Eric, who was having a proud smile around his lips.

"Finish him,” Eric ordered. "He just stole from my girl’s bag.” He curled his lips, and there was a pleasant smile around Avery's face as well.

"I wish.” Darren responded to Eric’s statement as he smiled calmly, ready for their attack.

The first guard threw him a fist, but Darren didn’t dodge it; instead, he grabbed the fist into his palm and gained full control of his arm.

He had things to do, and he needed to meet with his boss as soon as possible. He was going to make this quick; he gained entire control of his arms, gave them a tight twist, and launched a fist at the center of his head.

The impact was too much for him to survive; the guard fell flat to the ground. And as the rest came at him, Darren threw the guard, who was blocking the entrance door, on the floor and ran out.

He boarded a taxi and hurried to his workplace. When he got there, he saw the way his colleagues gave him a large suspicious smirk.

He ignored them as he headed for his boss's office. They never liked him or stood for him, so there was no reason for him to give any importance to whatever look they had on their faces.

"What is the fucking time?!” As he stepped into his office, he was welcomed by the growl of his boss.

“ 11a.m.” He answered, and the boss fumed in anger.

"And you were meant to resume when?” He asked again, as if he were his parent or guardian.

"8 a.m., sir.” Darren answered politely.

"Sir, I can explain." Darren said, but he was shunned immediately.

"That is enough from you. First you stole my money to rent an apartment for your girlfriend; now you are coming late to work as if you own the company?!” He roared, rising on his feet.

“ What? What do you mean, steal your money? I have never done that, sir.” Darren corrected him with a straight tone, speaking boldly at his boss for the first time.

"What the fuck is this rent receipt?!” He brought a document and wiped it on his table. This was the exact receipt he gave to Avery when he paid for her apartment with his salary, which he had saved for over a year.

"You are mistaking, sir. I used my savings to pay that rent!” Darren argued.

"Darren, enough of your fucking lies; you are fired!” He screamed at him, and Darren's heart sank as he already knew Avery and Eric were responsible for this.
