CHAPTER FOUR

"You!?"

Madame Cecil was shocked to see Adam, especially right on their ground, she hurriedly hid and replaced the shock, and with eyes filled with contempt, she glared at Adam, her voice was laced with malice and hatred as she continually glared at Adam, wishing him into oblivion

"What are you doing here, and how did you get this place, you bloody riff-raff!? Who let you in!?" she glanced at the security who had his hands raised

"I haven't let him in Ma'am, I was just about to kick him out before your arrival Madam." the security swiftly defended himself as he also glared at Adam.

Adam on the other hand couldn't believe his eyes, he didn't think his mother-in-law would be the one to greet him. He was well aware that she hated his guts and always felt like Louisa could have chosen better as she was a beauty. He knew she didn't see him as fit or worthy to be referred to as her son-in-law. In all of the confusion, Adam had yet to speak nor defend himself

"See as he stares like the lost stray dog that he is. I ask again, what do you want here? Your likes aren't needed here!"

Facing the security, she commanded him

"Hey, go release the dogs, let them have a feast with their kind who happens to be a stray one"

The security man's eyes widened but he hurried to happily do as he was instructed

"Right away Ma'am, I'm sure the dogs will have a feast with him" was his response as he jogged over to release the dogs.

Madam Doris once again faced Adam

"Oohh, the dogs are going to have a filled day with you worthless lowlife. I wonder how you got away from prison, I'm sure you must have escaped, there's no way you would have been released" Glaring contemptuously at him, she sniggered behind her palms at Adam's outfit.

"He couldn't even afford a change of clothes, little wonder how you would when you have no penny to your name. Look around you Adam, is this place the sort of place you could dream to afford? I'm not even sure you would see such in your dreams you penniless and impoverished bastard" she sneered at Adam.

"I'm not here to cause trouble, Mother… "

"Go find your mother in the dungeon you bloody fool. How dare you refer to me as your mother!? I have no worthless and penniless child. Trouble follows you everywhere you go, you disgusting lowlife prick, but I can assure you that you wouldn't even dare to cause trouble out here because after the dogs must have been done with you, I'll make sure your carcass is thrown into the dungeon where it rightfully belongs and where you clearly escaped from!"

Madam Cecil cut Adam short, as he struggled to explain.

Adam on the other hand visibly swallowed and sighed. He had hoped not to encounter Madam Cecil, but it was apparent that fate had other plans, he just wanted to know the whereabouts of his family, and he therefore soldiered on with his requests

"I'm sorry Ma'am. I'm only here seeking my wife and my child" he lowered his voice and eyes in response

"You have no child here you fool, and you most definitely don't have a wife here or anywhere else! Look around you, look around you I say, is this the kind of place you left your supposed wife in? So what gives you the temerity to think that your wife is here?" she asked him as she air-quoted her last statement.

Without waiting for Adam to reply, she continued lamenting to herself.

"I fail to understand what my child saw in you that prompted her to get with such a worthless pig. Someone clearly from the gutters, with no manners or anything to his name. I clearly did raise her better!"

Adam felt uncomfortable as she continued berating him, her eyes sending daggers towards him.

Adam's ears picked up the barking and growling of dogs from afar, he figured the security man had gone on to release the dogs per Madam Cecil's instruction. He wasn't fazed by the new development, he just needed to know the whereabouts of his wife and child, and this was an information Madam Cecil surely did have.

The taxi driver, on the other hand, had become increasingly impatient and angered as Adam had wasted his time. On bringing his passenger to this address, he had thought he would get paid and dismissed here but all to no avail, and to make matters worse, it seemed like the passenger wasn't being granted entrance to the mansion he had brought him to.

Angrily, he opened his car door and stepped out of the car, heading towards Adam to demand his payment so he could leave. He was done with this ruse.

"Hey Mister!! Where's my money!? Give me my money so I can be out of here!" he angrily called out to Adam as he approached him. Adam turned to the direction of the voice, and lightly chided himself within, in all of the drama, he had totally forgotten about the driver who had brought him here.

Suddenly scratching his hair in anticipation of the looming embarrassment, as he had no money on him and Raul had yet to get across to him

"Erhm, can you please wait a little longer? You'll have your money shortly" he pleadingly replied to the taxi man, his voice filled with remorse.

Putting a finger into his ear, the taxi man made to clean his ears as he glowered at Adam with a look of disgust

"I'm not sure I heard you clearly mister! I want my money, and I want it now. Enough of this ruse and game! My business isn't for your games, I have mouths to feed just so you know"

"I really apologize for the inconvenience once again Sir, but if you can just be a little patient, I'll get your money across to you. I'm not with any money right now"

Adam felt downcast and helpless, this wasn't how he hoped this day would be. It was supposed to be a day of rejoicing and reuniting for him, but it was turning out to be an accursed day.

The driver on the other hand had heard enough, and was suddenly maddened, how dare this man try to play a fast one on him, he vowed within himself to make him pay, and make a scapegoat out of him. Enraged, he approached Adam and dragged his trousers, holding onto it

"You are sordidly mistaken if you think I will wait an extra minute before I get my money. I should have known you would have nothing on you considering the gutters I picked you from. You thought you could feign calls and get me deceived!? Well joke on you mister, I'm done playing your games! I want my money and I want it now!" the taxi driver bellowed as he held on to the trousers.

Madam Cecil who had been watching the fracas, couldn't hold in her laughter and disgust. She was pleasantly happy with the embarrassment Adam was currently facing, she had even noticed some passersby slowly stop their walks to see what the commotion was about.

As far as she was concerned, the embarrassment wasn't enough, considering the life of poverty he had put her darling daughter through, and she clamoured for more within herself.

Facing the taxi driver, through the bars of her golden-crusted gate, she called out to him

"Hey, Mister! Do you realise that this is private property, and you are constituting a nuisance right here? If you have a bone to pick with the wretched man, I suggest you take it far away from here"

The taxi driver quietly glanced at her, seeing her appearance he concluded that she must be a lady of substance and worth, and he politely responded to her

"I'm so sorry Ma'am. It wasn't my intention, but this despicable fellow right here wants to have me deceived. He has had me on a merry-go-round all day and has refused to pay me what he owes me. I only seek to collect what's owed me, Madam"

Madam Cecil, couldn't contain herself anymore as she chortled in bitter laughter. She aimed to add coals of fire to the already burning matter

"How did you possibly think that this miserable tattered-looking fellow would have anything or even money to offer you? Haven't you seen how he looks? Can you not even smell the stench emanating from his body?"

"I was a fool, Madam, he deceived me by making glamorous calls which I now believe to be nothing but fake calls. I should have known better" the taxi driver responded to Madam Cecil, pained regret evident in his voice.

For a split second, she almost felt sorry for the taxi driver but she dismissed it. Such fools had no place for pity in her heart, besides pity was a word foreign to her.

In response, she guffawed loudly, she was enjoying this way too much. She noticed that more people had gathered and some had completely stopped their walk, she liked the growing audience; the more to crush Adam with.
