Chapter 9 Unrequited Feelings
Kendra had always been known for being cold and aloof, but her actions at that moment starkly contrasted her reputation. She was throwing herself at a man, ready to devote herself to him.

She never would have done that in the past.

However, nobody would be able to understand the reasons she had and the troubles she was facing at that moment. The Lockwood family had been around for more than 100 years. They were at the top in the business field because of the blood, sweat, and tears countless founding members of the family had gone through. Kendra could not lose the family business. However, she was facing a crisis that was great enough to end the Lockwood family and the Royal Sealift Group. She would not allow any accidents to happen.

Ashton removed her hands, turning around to look at her.

"Mister Levin…"

Was he a stubborn man with great self-control or an ascetic monk? Or was he genuinely uninterested in her? What other qualities did she have if he was not drawn to money and power and was not interested in beauty?

Kendra looked deeply troubled as she thought about that.

After all, she was just a delicate woman. She presented herself as a strong and heartless woman, but that was just the mask she wore to disguise herself. In the dead of night, she would cry and break down because of all the burdens she had to bear.

Seeing her looking so delicate and vulnerable, Ashton furrowed his brows. "Miss Lockwood, we were supposed to be engaged, but it looks like you have no clue about it."

"Huh? What?" Kendra was stunned as she looked at him, unable to process what he said.

Engaged? Her father had never told her about it before. Could he have made a mistake?

The Lockwood family were aristocrats from South Edren. Her fiancé must be a descendant of a prominent, wealthy family, at the very least. However, no matter how hard she racked her brain, she could not think of any powerful family bearing the Levin name in South Edren.

"But…" The next thing she knew, she had an idea. Her worries were replaced by joy, and she wore a cunning expression.

She needed a favor from him then, so it did not matter if it was true. The most important thing was to get him in the same boat as the Royal Sealift Group and get through the difficulties at the time.

"You may not have heard of the Levin family, but that doesn't matter because I'm not a family member now. However, it's that we were indeed engaged. I just haven't spoken to your family about it all this while."

"It's fine." Kendra smiled, wrapping her arms around him once again. "It's fine, Mister Levin. It's even better that you're my fiance. After this crisis, I'll tell my father and have him pick a date for our wedding. When the time comes, we'll be a family."

Kendra felt bitter. She had sacrificed so much to end that crisis! She had never been close to a man before, but to please him, she threw herself at him repeatedly, letting go of her arrogance and nobility. She was not sure if it was even worth it to do so, but she could not care less.

Unexpectedly, Ashton pushed her away again as soon as she finished her sentence. "You're misunderstood, Miss Lockwood. I mean to say I can help you, but on one condition—break off the engagement."

Kendra's smile stiffened immediately.

She thought that Ashton wanted to use their engagement as the chance to get involved with the Royal Sealift Group and become her husband. He could then gain higher social status and hold immense power. In the end, what he wanted was to break off the engagement.

The bastard had gone too far, had he not?

He had done the Royal Sealift Group such a huge favor, so he could have made them return him a favor and ripped them off. However, his condition was actually to end the engagement. It was as if Kendra would shamelessly ingratiate herself with him and refuse to end the engagement if he had not done them a favor. Kendra had never been insulted like that before.

Kendra forced a laugh before gritting her teeth and saying, "I see. Alright. You have my word on it. I will agree to end the engagement as long as you help us. Furthermore, I will persuade my father and the others, and I will not cause any problems for you."

He smiled. That jerk smiled. Did he dislike Kendra that much?

Kendra noticed that Ashton was beaming. She had never seen such a smile on him since they met. It was as if a huge weight had been lifted off his chest.

Kendra's expression darkened. Clenching her fists, she turned around and walked to the bed. Then she took a deep breath to calm herself down.

"Let's not talk about that now. Regarding the worm, Mister Levin, it's evident that someone had meticulously plotted this scheme to target the Royal Sealift Group. But the person's identity is still unknown to me right now. The person will be alerted once word gets out that these patients have fully recovered. That's going to make it even hard to back the mastermind behind the scene.

"If he attacks again, it'll be a disaster that the company can't bear. Therefore, I need you to help me cure the patients but keep all of this under wraps until I've gotten rid of this trouble without any loose ends," Kendra said.

"Keep it under wraps?"

"That's right." Kendra nodded. She wore the same old indifferent expression again, and her eyes gleamed with wisdom. "Keep the crew's recovery a secret until I catch the culprit. I am confident I can do it, but I need you to work with me."

Ashton nodded. "Alright. I won't tell anybody about this before you get to the bottom of it. However, I hope you can keep your word as well."

Then, using a tweezer, Ashton extracted the worms from the patients' bodies, placing them in the tray one by one. Kendra felt sick after just a few glances at the fat black worms with a purple tinge.

Fortunately, the patients' vital signs stabilized. Kendra felt as if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders.

The door burst open at that precise moment.
