CHAPTER 04

Just as the card was thrown in Denver’s face, Denver’s mother-in-law, Subrina, arrived at the bank in a taxi. She saw Denver quarreling with the assistant manager and the guard. She could even hear their voices.

“Denver? What’s he doing here? That thick-headed bastard… is he fighting with the bank staff?” Just after she stepped out of the car, she received a phone call from Diane. She answered it.

“He found out about Stephen, Mom,” Diane said with no regret or pain in her voice.

Subrina’s eyes widened. “WHAT? H-How? When?”

Diane explained everything quickly because Stephen was still in the house. “In the end, I kicked him out of the house. He might cause trouble, so we should be prepared.”

“A-Alright. We’ll talk about it after I come home,” Subrina said and ended the call before heading toward the bank. It was her first time coming to this big private bank, so she put on excess makeup, making her resemble an old courtesan of sorts. She came and flaunted the check that Stephen had given her.

The assistant manager saw the gold-coated check, and his eyes slightly widened. It was a premium account’s check, so he smiled politely and gestured to her enter the bank.

Subrina’s lips cracked into a cocky smile.

“A-Aunt,” Denver softly called for her.

Subrina, who had been purposely ignoring him, had a smug look going on her visage. “Mm?” she glanced over her shoulder. “Denver? What are you doing here?”

“I’m conducting business.”

“You, a pauper, conduct business here?” she arrogantly snorted. “Don’t joke around so blatantly, or the sky will collapse on us all.”

Denver pursed his lips in response. Subrina always had a sharp tongue when talking with him, but she seemed especially rude this time. “Let me enter the bank with you. Or at least, check the balance on this card,” he requested.

“Hmph,” Subrina indifferently snorted. “One should wash their own dirty underwear, Denver. If you want to conduct business in this bank, then get through the door on your own. Otherwise, get lost.” Saying that, she entered the bank, as personally led by the assistant manager.

This woman never liked him because he didn’t put his earnings directly in her hands.

“Beat it before I count to three, or you’ll get a taste of a thousand volts!” the security guard raised the activated baton in his hand, making the people step back.

Denver, however, clenched his fists and returned a defying look at the guard, making him swing the baton.

Denver’s eyes closely tracked the movement of the baton. His body responded in the exact opposite movement as his feet arched forward and his body to rotate halfway, allowing him to dodge the baton by the finest margin. He still felt a slight shock even though it didn’t even graze him.

Just then, the manager’s car entered the premises. He stepped out of the car with a frown on his face.

“What’s going on? Who are you?” he inquired about Denver and the situation before his eyes. “Why are you causing a scuffle right before the bank?”

Before Denver could say anything, the assistant manager came rushing out of the bank and snatched the card in Denver’s hand, “Sir, this guy brought a fake card and says he wants to check the balance. I told him to go to the ATM, but he’s adamant on entering the bank! This poor bastard probably doesn’t even know how to use an ATM, yet he attacked the security guard! We should call the police and get him arrested!”

“Let me look at the card first,” the manager took the card from the assistant manager and scrutinized it. His heart began to beat faster and louder.

“Sir, that’s a fake,” the assistant manager insisted in a mocking manner. “It doesn’t even have a chip.”

The manager’s expression turned cold. He immediately slapped the assistant with the back of his hand. “You fool. This is a genuine diamond card from our bank. It’s not that it doesn’t have a chip. It’s just that the chip is hidden inside.”

. “D-Diamond card?” the assistant’s eyes broadened to the max. “I-Isn’t that just a legend?”

The security guard’s face turned paler by the second.

Subrina was also standing at the door and was listening to the whole conversation. “Diamond card? What sort of a joke is this? Isn’t black card the rarest card a bank can offer?”

She didn’t like the attention that was shifting toward Denver, so she had to say these words.

“Even if there is such a card that’s rarer than the black card, this useless guy can’t possibly conduct business here,” she continued mocking him without reserve. “After all, look at his dress. He’s just a construction worker who eats cement and shits bricks every day. How can he have an ultra-rare card with him?”

Even Stephen, a super-rich guy, gave her a gold bank card, so how could someone like Denver ever get his hands on a diamond card? That was impossible according to Subrina who had seen him struggle for nearly three years and save the money to buy a small house that was barely to her satisfaction!

Despite everything Subrina said, the manager ignored her and looked at Denver. “Please come with me, sir,” he respectfully invited Denver inside, dropping Subrina’s jaw.

“W-Wait, what are you…” Subrina was saying, but she had to move aside as the manager entered the building. “Manager, this guy is piss poor! He can’t possibly have the money to transact here! He probably knew that I’d come here. That’s why he’s here. See him out with a stun baton!”
