2025-02-17 20:58:31Drax gripped the steering wheel tightly as he navigated the crowded streets. Cara sat beside him, her eyes fixed on her phone.
"We're almost there," she said, her voice low and pressured.
Drax grunted as his his eyes scanned the road ahead. He hated hospitals. Hated the smell of disinfectant and the sound of beeping machines.
As they turned into the hospital parking lot, Cara pointed to a vacant spot. "There."
Drax pulled into the spot and killed the engine. Then, in unison, they opened their doors and stepped out onto the pavement.
Holding Cara's hand, they rushed into the hospital and soon met with a nurse at the nurse's station who directed them to room 3 on the VIP suites where Cara's father was admitted.
Taking a lift, they went to the fourth floor and located the room. When Cara saw her grandfather lying on the bed unconscious, she gasped and clasped her hands on her mouth.
"Oh my God…" Cara muttered as she stepped closer to him. A maid was tending to the older man and she stood up as Cara went to meet him. Drax watched carefully.
He was particularly concerned about the streaks of yellow lines on the order man's face, and his rather pale, blue lips.
"What has the doctor said?" Cara asked the maid while she sniffled.
"They don't know what kind of poison it is, or what antidote to give. They've taken some blood samples and have decided to run More tests. I'm so sorry, Miss Cara. It's my fault. I should have been more careful," she sobbed.
Drax was certain that he knew what kind of poison that was used on the man. He had seen it before in his world.
"How did my grandfather get poisoned? Who could have done this?" Cara asked no one in particular.
"And now, we don't even know if he'll make it or not," she added and sobbed. Drax moved toward her and placed his hand on her left shoulder, squeezing it a bit.
"I know what kind of poison it is. It's Dark rose root poison. Very rare. Extremely dangerous,"
He would know, for it was the same poison that his wife used on him. Fate was cruel, wasn't it? The irony was baffling.
"How do you know this?" Cara asked him with curiosity on her face.
"It doesn't matter. What matters is that I can cure it. I'll gather the materials needed to make a cure and heal your grandfather. He will be fine. I promise," Drax reassured her.
Cara found him mystifying. She tried to figure him out but whenever she attempted, it was like Drax was pulled in further into a den of secrets.
She was about to say something when a young man stepped into the room, wearing a police badge. He shot a glare at Drax before he smiled at Cara.
"Frank? It's been a while," she said to him and rose to give him a quick hug.
"I came as soon as I heard," Frank said to her and glared at Drax again, who simply held his gaze.
"Frank, this is Drax. My boyfriend. Drax, this is Detective Frank. He's a family friend," she introduced them both, but neither men extended their hands for a handshake.
"I've heard about you, Mr Drax. Infact, you're why I'm here. A report was filed against you, saying that you're responsible for the attempted murder of Mr Blackview here,* Frank said and crossed his arms.
"That is preposterous," Drax replied. Frank arched his brow.
"Is it? The last thing Mr Blackview consumed was a Brandy that you bought for him yesterday. Or isn't that right?" Frank directed the last question to the maid who just nodded.
"And what would my motivation be? He already gave me a lot," Drax said to him.
"Exactly. But he didn't give you everything, did he? That right there is motivation for murder, especially if you're the greedy type," Frank maintained his position as both men shot glares at each other.
"Frank, that's enough. You're a cop. You don't work with sentiments," Cara cut in as her head raced with questions.
"Jason Hale reported Drax. I wanted to investigate this case myself because Mr Blackview is like a father to me. And I will not rest until I uncover the truth," Frank added and stared at Drax in the eyes.
"Don't leave the city, Mr Drax. I'll be coming back," he said and walked out of the room.
As his receding footsteps echoed through the hall, Drax scoffed. Jason reporting him was corny.
"I'll prepare the antidote now," he told Cara who just nodded as she gazed at him. She didn't want to believe that Drax could hurt her grandfather.
Cara knew criminals when she sees them. Drax wasn't one. Drax, however, kissed her forehead and stepped out of the room. But then his phone buzzed.
It was the secretary back the office.
"This is not a good time," he said as soon as he picked up the phone.
"Sir, all shareholders are assembling right now for a meeting. You must come here at once."
"A meeting? What meeting?"
"I don't know sir. But he's leading them. Jason Hale is leading them!"
